‘Collaborate with Kannada experts for accuracy': Siddaramaiah schools Meta after being declared dead; calls it ‘very dangerous'
BENGALURU: In a classic case of lost in translation, Meta's auto translation tool "digitally killed" chief minister Siddaramaiah. Understandably furious at being referred to as "late" CM Siddaramaiah, he has asked Meta to suspend its Kannada auto-translation feature until it learns not to distort facts.
The faux pas unfolded when the chief minister's office, on Tuesday, posted a condolence message in Kannada on Facebook and Instagram, mourning the death of veteran actress B Sarojadevi. But Meta's English auto-translation read: "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah passed away yesterday multilingual star, senior actress B. Took darshan of Sarojadevi's earthly body and paid his last respects."

Reacting sharply to the goof-up, Siddaramaiah posted on X: "Faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts and misleading users.
This is especially dangerous when it comes to official communication."

"We have noted with concern that the auto-translation from Kannada to English is frequently inaccurate and, in some cases, grossly misleading," wrote KV Prabhakar, the CM's media adviser.
He cautioned that such bloopers could cause confusion, especially when they involve public communication, official statements or important messages from the CM or govt.
"Many may not realise that what they are reading is an automated translation rather than the original message," he added.
The CMO has urged Meta to hit the pause button on Kannada auto-translation until it improves the feature further. It also asked the tech company to collaborate with Kannada language experts and professionals "to enhance contextual accuracy" of translations from Kannada to English."

Porvorim: During the period for which the PWD implemented the Zero Water Bill Scheme, from Sep 1, 2021, to April 30, 2025, it issued 41.9 lakh zero bills to domestic consumers. However, as a long-term measure, govt is investing in upgrading and modernising water treatment facilities, distribution networks, and storage systems,' he said. 5,000 occupancy sanads to be issued under 20-point scheme
Panaji: The state cabinet on Wednesday granted approval to issue occupancy sanads to over 5,000 occupants of the plots allotted under the 20-Point Programme. As for allottees who failed to construct any residential dwelling within the stipulated time, and the plots remain vacant, govt may consider reverting all such plots. It will direct both district collectors to identify these vacant plots, issue reversion orders, and take possession. In the monsoon session of the assembly in 2024, a resolution was moved in the House by MLAs regarding the regularisation of houses constructed without prior permission on the plots allotted under the 20-Point Programme. The chief minister and the revenue minister assured the House that the proposal would be examined on legal parameters and regularisation would be considered in due course. Under govt's 20-Point Programme, plots were provided for settlement to economically weaker sections of society. However, since the status of Occupant Class II does not confer ownership, the allottees remain without the title, and the ownership of the land continues to vest with govt, limiting beneficiaries' legal and developmental rights. State govt has classified the plots into three categories. Category A comprises allottees who have constructed a dwelling according to the grant conditions and are residing there with their families or legal heirs as of the current date. Category C covers plots where the allottees have unauthorisedly transferred possession to third parties, who have constructed a dwelling and are residing in these houses on the plots. No reversion orders have been passed, and the third parties remain in unauthorised occupation.
