‘Collaborate with Kannada experts for accuracy': Siddaramaiah schools Meta after being declared dead; calls it ‘very dangerous'

BENGALURU: In a classic case of lost in translation, Meta's auto translation tool "digitally killed" chief minister Siddaramaiah. Understandably furious at being referred to as "late" CM Siddaramaiah, he has asked Meta to suspend its Kannada auto-translation feature until it learns not to distort facts.
The faux pas unfolded when the chief minister's office, on Tuesday, posted a condolence message in Kannada on Facebook and Instagram, mourning the death of veteran actress B Sarojadevi. But Meta's English auto-translation read: "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah passed away yesterday multilingual star, senior actress B. Took darshan of Sarojadevi's earthly body and paid his last respects."

Reacting sharply to the goof-up, Siddaramaiah posted on X: "Faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts and misleading users.
This is especially dangerous when it comes to official communication."
CMO: Collaborate with Kannada experts for contextual accuracy
My media adviser has formally written to Meta urging immediate correction. Social media platforms must act responsibly. I caution citizens to be aware that translations shown are often inaccurate. Such negligence by tech giants can harm public understanding and trust," the chief minister posted.
The CMO said it has sent an official email to Meta, calling for urgent intervention.

"We have noted with concern that the auto-translation from Kannada to English is frequently inaccurate and, in some cases, grossly misleading," wrote KV Prabhakar, the CM's media adviser.
He cautioned that such bloopers could cause confusion, especially when they involve public communication, official statements or important messages from the CM or govt.
"Many may not realise that what they are reading is an automated translation rather than the original message," he added.
The CMO has urged Meta to hit the pause button on Kannada auto-translation until it improves the feature further. It also asked the tech company to collaborate with Kannada language experts and professionals "to enhance contextual accuracy" of translations from Kannada to English."

Goa govt absorbed expenditure of Rs 65cr under zero water bill scheme

Porvorim: During the period for which the PWD implemented the Zero Water Bill Scheme, from Sep 1, 2021, to April 30, 2025, it issued 41.9 lakh zero bills to domestic consumers. The total bill amount of Rs 65.5 crore was waived under the scheme, stated the reply tabled in the assembly by chief minister Pramod Sawant to a question by Velim MLA Cruz Silva. Goa govt officially ended its zero-bill scheme on May 1. The scheme allowed the drinking water bill to be waived for families who limited their usage to less than 16,000 litres of water per month. The idea behind the scheme was to encourage the judicious use of drinking water resources. However, the CM said that earlier this year, the scheme of free water to consumers had to be stopped due to the misuse of water to wash cars or sustain gardens. He said govt is already supplying treated water to consumers by bearing a loss of Rs 16 per litre. Sawant said that the total water demand for domestic, commercial, and industrial uses is 695MLD — with system losses being factored in. The CM told the House that the highest demand for water at 146.5MLD is in Salcete taluka, followed by 123MLD in Bardez, and 94MLD in Tiswadi. He, however, said that no village of Goa faces an acute water shortage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jennifer Garner's sweet photo on sprawling family farm gets fans talking Watch More Undo 'The complaints regarding water shortages or non-supply of water are of a localised nature due to power failure, leakages, breakdowns, and the blockage of pipelines,' he said. The CM said these problems are attended to within the shortest possible time. 'In such eventualities, tanker supply is resorted to as a short-term measure. However, as a long-term measure, govt is investing in upgrading and modernising water treatment facilities, distribution networks, and storage systems,' he said. Sawant stated that 11 projects for new water treatment plants or augmentation of the capacity of existing plants are under process. He said that three plants — at Ganjem, Tuem, and Siolim — will be commissioned in Dec 2025.

5,000 occupancy sanads to be issued under 20-point scheme

Panaji: The state cabinet on Wednesday granted approval to issue occupancy sanads to over 5,000 occupants of the plots allotted under the 20-Point Programme. As for allottees who failed to construct any residential dwelling within the stipulated time, and the plots remain vacant, govt may consider reverting all such plots. It will direct both district collectors to identify these vacant plots, issue reversion orders, and take possession. In the monsoon session of the assembly in 2024, a resolution was moved in the House by MLAs regarding the regularisation of houses constructed without prior permission on the plots allotted under the 20-Point Programme. The chief minister and the revenue minister assured the House that the proposal would be examined on legal parameters and regularisation would be considered in due course. Under govt's 20-Point Programme, plots were provided for settlement to economically weaker sections of society. However, since the status of Occupant Class II does not confer ownership, the allottees remain without the title, and the ownership of the land continues to vest with govt, limiting beneficiaries' legal and developmental rights. One of the primary reasons necessitating this policy is the hardship caused to the beneficiaries in carrying out renovations, obtaining permissions from govt departments, obtaining loans from banks, or securing essential public services. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain| search ads Find Now Undo The total plots allotted under the 20-Point Programme in Goa are 5,179. State govt has classified the plots into three categories. Category A comprises allottees who have constructed a dwelling according to the grant conditions and are residing there with their families or legal heirs as of the current date. Category B comprises plots that have remained vacant and unutilised, where the allottees have either not taken possession or have not constructed any house. Category C covers plots where the allottees have unauthorisedly transferred possession to third parties, who have constructed a dwelling and are residing in these houses on the plots. No reversion orders have been passed, and the third parties remain in unauthorised occupation. Govt will consider granting them occupancy status upon the payment of a premium of 1/20th of the market value/minimum land rate as notified by govt.
