Federal-Sabah ties must be close, built on mutual trust

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger ties between the federal government and Sabah, grounded in mutual trust and aimed at advancing the state's development and protecting the welfare of its people.
Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, said Sabah should follow Sarawak's example, where closer federal-state cooperation has shown tangible benefits.

He reiterated Putrajaya's commitment to working with Sabah's leadership on governance and development, to further safeguard the state's interests and wellbeing.
'The federal government has long prioritised Sabah's needs. This isn't about state elections, it's about responsibility,' he told reporters after meeting Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders on Thursday night.

Anwar added that the federal government has consistently shown concern for Sabah's needs, and the issue goes beyond electoral considerations.
Also present were Sabah PH chairman Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also president of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO), PKR Sabah State Leadership Council (MPN) chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmu, and Sabah DAP chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.

Anwar said that under his administration, the Federal Government had demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) through a committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, along with ministers from Sabah and Sarawak.
He said that as a result of that determination, nine key matters which were delayed for decades had been successfully resolved, and even more complex issues such as those concerning oil affairs had been addressed.

'So we propose the same principle so that more assured revenue for Sabah can be achieved. Not misused - for me, continuity and governance are the priorities, not leaders scrambling for wealth for themselves.
'But to use the opportunity to defend the fate of the people. This is the government that must be upheld and supported for our people,' he said.
Anwar said the Federal government has proven its commitment to defending Sabah's rights, especially in addressing the issue of the Sulu group's claim, which was successfully repelled and overcome, thus upholding the dignity of the state as part of Malaysia.
"We gave our full commitment in the Cabinet meeting, and even in the recent ASEAN summit, we managed to ensure that Sabah's issues are always prioritised," he said.
Asked about PH's cooperation strategy in the Sabah State Election (PRN), Anwar, who is also PH Chairman, said that Sabah PH is currently holding discussions with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN).
"Let Sabah PH decide; they are negotiating with GRS and negotiating with Sabah BN. These Sabah PH leaders will come forward and coordinate. Right now, it seems that all meetings are progressing, and we don't anticipate any problems," he said.

SEREMBAN: Timor-Leste's permanent membership in ASEAN is now in the documentation phase before its formal admission at the October summit. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed the progress during a press briefing today. 'At the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October, there will be a ceremony to welcome Timor-Leste as a permanent member of ASEAN. Right now, it is only at the documentation stage,' he said. He added that Timor-Leste has met most of ASEAN's membership requirements. 'We decided that they should first be admitted as a permanent member, after which ASEAN will assist them in completing the remaining documentation process,' he explained. ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to Timor-Leste's inclusion as the 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October. The decision aligns with the outcome of the 46th ASEAN Summit. A Joint Communique from the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 9 highlighted support for Timor-Leste's early accession to key economic agreements. 'We look forward to Timor-Leste fulfilling its roles and obligations as an incoming member state and its commitment to upholding ASEAN's fundamental principles,' the statement read. Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia's youngest nation, applied for ASEAN membership in 2011. The country gained independence on May 20, 2002, after years of struggle. Despite delays, Dili has shown strong commitment to meeting ASEAN's membership criteria. In February, Malaysia contributed US$200,000 to the ASEAN Secretariat's Timor-Leste Unit in Jakarta. The funds aim to accelerate the membership process. Malaysia has also provided technical training through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP). Tok Mat: BN to defend all seats, reclaim traditional constituencies ceded to Bersatu in last Sabah polls
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Barisan Nasional (BN) will contest all the seats it currently holds in Sabah and move to reclaim traditional constituencies that were previously handed to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in the last state election (PRN). BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said this to Sinar Harian when asked about seat distribution for the Sabah polls, expected later this year after the State Legislative Assembly automatically dissolves on November 11. He stressed that BN remains firm in its stand to return to its traditional seats, which he said were 'given away' to a coalition partner during the previous state election. 'We will remain firm in contesting the seats we won, as well as the traditional seats that were previously handed over to Bersatu. 'During the last Sabah polls, many Umno-BN traditional seats were given to Bersatu in the spirit of cooperation. 'But in the end, we were stabbed in the back. We do not want that to happen again,' he reportedly said after officiating the joint delegates' meeting of the Rembau Umno Women's, Youth and Puteri wings in Seremban today. Mohamad also underlined that Umno-BN must emerge as the dominant party in Sabah after the coming election. On Gabungan Rakyat Sabah's (GRS) plan to contest 39 seats, he said this would depend on the outcome of ongoing negotiations. 'We have appointed the Umno secretary-general and the BN secretary-general to negotiate on seat distribution. 'What matters is that BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) have finalised their cooperation to face the Sabah polls. The rest is still open,' he said, as cited by the national daily. He added that BN does not want to lock itself too tightly into early discussions, preferring to give space to the joint committee to work out the most effective cooperation and allocation of seats. 'We want the negotiations to be concluded quickly because the election is drawing near. 'The grassroots machinery must understand and be clear about the party's direction as we head into this election,' he said.

World recognises Malaysia's role in Thai-Cambodia peace efforts, says PM Anwar
LARUT: Malaysia's role as Asean Chair in facilitating reconciliation efforts between Thailand and Cambodia following recent border tensions has been recognised internationally, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said that although there were certain quarters that refused to acknowledge Malaysia's role, the trust placed by the countries involved was clear proof that they held Malaysia's political and economic stability in high regard. "Thank God, in Malaysia our politics are stable and our economic development is respected. So, when disputes arise, the task of reconciliation is entrusted to us. This is a form of international recognition, even if some in Parliament may choose not to acknowledge it - and that is fine," he said. Anwar made the remarks when opening the Madani Dairy Entrepreneur Carnival at Farm Fresh Perak Dairy Complex on Saturday (Aug 16). Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek Earlier, US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Meanwhile, Anwar said Malaysia's strong diplomatic relations with foreign countries have brought significant benefits, particularly in creating new economic opportunities in the country. "For example, during the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, Thai milk could not enter Cambodia, but Farm Fresh milk successfully entered the market. "I am sharing this because our relations with Thailand and Cambodia are good. If Farm Fresh wishes to open a farm in Thailand, we will extend our full cooperation," he said. Anwar also stressed that the government will continue to support initiatives that strengthen the nation's food security, including the dairy industry. Expressing pride in the achievements of local dairy producer Farm Fresh Bhd, he praised the company for its contribution to the dairy sector, job creation for Malaysians, and commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Meanwhile, Farm Fresh chief operations director Azmi Zainal said the company's 828-acre complex in Perak is home to 4,300 dairy cows producing 22,000 litres of milk daily. "In a year, this complex produces 10 million litres of milk, making it the largest and most productive dairy farm in the country," he said, adding that the farm has 150 local workers, most of whom are under 30 years old. Farm Fresh also buys milk from local small farmers at competitive prices. "Through our CSR initiatives last year, we awarded scholarships to 500 STPM students and starting this year, we will also introduce a mathematics tuition programme for primary school students," he added. - Bernama
