Immigration Dept and AKPS to tackle staff misconduct at entry points
JIM Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban stated that discussions will be held with AKPS if problematic officers at major entry points need reassignment.
He clarified that AKPS now fully manages 22 key entry points, including KLIA, Johor's Sultan Iskandar Building, and Penang International Airport.
JIM officers continue to oversee daily airport operations, with AKPS handling counter arrangements while immigration staff assist in intelligence and monitoring.
Zakaria assured full cooperation with AKPS to remove officers linked to misconduct if reshuffles are necessary.
He spoke to reporters after leading an operation at a Simpang Ampat factory, where 307 foreign nationals were detained for immigration violations.
The operation's success stemmed from joint intelligence efforts between JIM and AKPS, with continuous disciplinary actions against errant officers.
Since 2022, 147 disciplinary cases involving immigration officers have been recorded, resulting in 55 dismissals.
To curb power abuse, JIM is expanding digital solutions like autogates at entry points to minimise officer-traveller interaction.
During the raid, 749 foreigners were screened, with 306 Bangladeshis and one Nepalese detained for pass violations.
All detainees will undergo further investigation before being transferred to the Jawi Immigration Detention Depot. – Bernama

GEORGE TOWN: Police are finalising investigation papers on the case of five Iranian nationals who were arrested for investigation into the alleged theft of money from foreign tourists around the George Town city centre last Saturday. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said all five, aged between 19 and 35, have finished their police remand and are currently being remanded by the Immigration Department until Aug 15. Mohd Alwi said his party was investigating the cases under Section 379 of the Penal Code (for theft) and Section 380 the same act in addition to Section 6 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Last Saturday, police arrested the three men and two women at Plaza Gurney during Op Tourist to assist in the investigation into the theft of money from foreign tourists who were believed to have been swindled through trickery around the city centre, where the suspects are believed to possess expertise to swindle with sweet-talking skills to carry out the crime such as casting victims under a spell or a charm (pukau) before stealing their money. Police received three reports of cash theft involving tourists in a hypnosis scam (pukau) that occurred in the Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang areas involving victims who were Taiwanese, Dutch and Syrian nationals, all aged between 29 and 52, in incidents from July 30 to Aug 1.

GEORGE TOWN: Police are completing investigation papers on five Iranian nationals arrested for allegedly stealing money from foreign tourists in George Town last Saturday. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin confirmed the suspects, aged 19 to 35, have finished their police remand and are now under Immigration Department custody until August 15. 'Police are still probing possible links to similar cases in other states, but no findings have surfaced yet,' he said. Investigations reveal their involvement in three theft cases reported in George Town, with papers being finalised for submission to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office. Authorities are also verifying the authenticity of the suspects' passports and their travel records in Malaysia. MACC and AKPS to strengthen border operations with new cooperation
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has pledged to strengthen cooperation with the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) in operations and training. This commitment was made during a courtesy visit by AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain to MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. Azam highlighted AKPS as a crucial agency in national security and assured full MACC support for shared objectives. 'Several AKPS-related issues have been under MACC scrutiny, but resolving them has been difficult,' Azam said in a statement. He expressed confidence that the new partnership would help address these challenges more effectively. Azam also proposed incentives for AKPS border officers to boost morale and integrity. 'The MACC fully supports this proposal as incentives can motivate frontline personnel and reduce complacency,' he added. Mohd Shuhaily described the meeting as a key platform for discussing operational strategies and anti-corruption efforts. 'This collaboration will enhance border control systems and foster higher integrity among officers,' he said. Senior officials from both agencies attended the meeting, including MACC's Datuk Zainul Darus and Datuk Saiful Ezral Arifin.
