Lost Your Wallet? Here's How To Quickly Get Back Your Aadhaar, PAN And Other Vital Documents

NDTV3 days ago
In today's busy public transport and crowded streets, incidents of purse theft have become increasingly common. Often, it's not just the money that's lost, but important identity documents like Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, driving licenses, and bank cards too. Losing these essential items can create significant challenges. But there are steps you can take immediately to protect yourself and begin the process of reissuing your documents.
First Step: File an FIR
If your purse containing important documents is stolen, your first action should be to visit the nearest police station and lodge a complaint. Filing an FIR is not only necessary for security reasons but also becomes an official record. It serves as proof that your documents were stolen, which can protect you from any potential misuse of your identity.
Block Your Bank Cards
In case ATM or credit cards are also lost, contact your bank immediately and request to block the cards to prevent unauthorised transactions. Most banks offer 24/7 customer support for such emergencies.
How to Reapply for Lost Documents:
Aadhaar Card
You can reprint your Aadhaar card by visiting the UIDAI website or any nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra. If your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar, you can even request a reprint from home.
PAN Card
To get a duplicate PAN card, visit the NSDL or UTIITSL website. Use the "Reprint PAN" or "Lost PAN" option. You'll need to submit some identity verification, and a copy of the FIR may be required.
Driving License
Go to parivahan.gov.in and apply for a duplicate driving license. Upload the FIR copy and necessary documents during the application process.
ATM or Credit Cards
Visit your bank branch or call customer care to issue a new ATM or credit card. Some banks also allow you to request replacement cards through mobile apps or net banking.
While losing your purse is distressing, knowing the correct process can reduce the inconvenience significantly. Always keep a digital backup of important documents and avoid carrying all originals together when commuting.

HC notice to Hry, Karnal police on plea against police inaction in loan app sextortion case

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a notice to the Haryana govt and the Karnal police on a petition filed by a Karnal woman alleging victimisation by cyber sextortion and subsequent police misconduct in a case linked to a fraudulent loan application. The petitioner sought the quashing of a police challan dated Aug 4, 2023, which, she alleges, falsely concludes the case as "untraced" despite substantial evidence and prior involvement of the accused with the police. The woman's ordeal began in 2021 when she responded to an Instagram advertisement for instant loans. After downloading a mobile loan application from the Google Play Store, the app accessed her contact list and required personal identification, including her Aadhaar card, PAN card, and a photograph, according to the woman. Although she initially received and repaid a small loan, she soon became a victim of blackmail. The accused allegedly morphed her uploaded photograph to create obscene images and threatened to circulate them among her contacts unless she paid large sums of money. Out of fear and humiliation, Poonam reportedly paid between Rs 25–30 lakh to the fraudsters between May 2021 and Feb 2022. When the accused eventually circulated doctored nude images to her family and friends, Poonam attempted suicide. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Her husband intervened and saved her life. Following this, the couple lodged a complaint at the cyber crime police station in Karnal, leading to an FIR on Sept 27, 2022, under various sections of the Information Technology Act and Indian Penal Code. The petition alleges that the police failed to act effectively. Instead of arresting the accused, the police allegedly brokered a settlement between the parties and even took Rs 5 lakh from the money the accused returned to Poonam. According to her, the accused visited the police station on two occasions and transferred Rs 30 lakh to her account as part of a supposed settlement — an interaction witnessed and facilitated by the police. Despite this, the Karnal police filed a closure report (challan) on Aug 4, 2023, stating the accused were untraceable and omitting any mention of the money repaid or the affidavits of compromise signed by the petitioner and her husband, the petitioner submitted. In her plea, she sought the quashing of the Aug 4, 2023, challan submitted by the in-charge of cyber crime police station, Karnal, and to transfer the investigation to an independent agency — either the crime branch, CBI, or a district police unit other than Karnal — under the supervision of the DGP, Haryana. While fixing the matter for August 26, Justice Sanjay Vashisth asked the Haryana govt, DGP, and the Karnal police to file a reply on the petitioner's contention before the next date of hearing.
