Galatasaray boss 'acted like he'd been shot' in Mourinho row

BBC News04-04-2025

Fenerbahce have accused Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk of acting "as if he had been shot" after a confrontation with their manager Jose Mourinho on Wednesday night. In a strongly-worded statement, Fenerbahce accused Buruk of having the "audacity to make disrespectful hand gestures" to provoke Mourinho, who then "briefly touched his nose" in response. The Turkish Cup match, which Galatasaray won 2-1, came amid increased animosity between the two clubs. Following the match Galatasaray accused Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho of "physically attacking" their manager Buruk after he appeared to grab his nose following the fiery derby match. The incident occurred after the final whistle at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, when both managers were interacting with the match officials in the centre circle."This was a planned provocation [by Buruk] and as part of this plan the individual acted as if he had been 'shot' and fell to the ground in a professional manner, and his disrespectful words and actions are documented on video," Fenerbahce said in a statement."The absurdity of someone who is touched on the nose immediately throwing himself to the ground and writhing for seconds is clear to the public."It is evident that this individual's tendency to fall to the ground, seen during his playing days, continues in his coaching career, showing that this behaviour is a characteristic attitude."Buruk sought to play the incident down at his post-match news conference, saying there was "nothing" between him and Mourinho. But Galatasaray inflamed the situation further by posting a video on X mocking Mourinho in the style of US comedy South Park.Fenerbahce substitute Mert Yandas and Galatasaray substitutes Kerem Demirbay and Baris Yilmaz were shown red cards for their part in a melee between the two benches during stoppage time.
Background
Following a goalless draw between the two clubs in the Turkish Super Lig in February, Galatasaray said they would "initiate criminal proceedings" against Mourinho after claiming he made "racist statements".The Turkish Football Federation handed Mourinho a four-game ban and a fine of £35,194 for two separate disciplinary matters.Mourinho responded by launching a lawsuit against Galatasaray "due to the attack on the personal rights" of the Portuguese.

Spain captain Alvaro Morata demands a return to his former club - despite spell in Turkey saving his marriage to Italian model Alice Campello following post-Euros split

Spain captain Alvaro Morata has demanded a return to his former club - despite his stay in Turkey saving his marriage. Morata, 32, split with his Italian influencer wife Alice Campello, 30, after his country's European Championship win last summer, but they rekindled their relationship in January this year. The glamorous couple met in 2016 and have four young children — Alessandro, Leonardo (twins), Edoardo, and Bella — but announced last August that they were going their separate ways seven years after tying the knot. Referencing the break-up, the model said: 'It was the biggest mistake we've ever made in our lives.' In a separate interview with Hola magazine, Campello admitted that the couple's move to Turkey has strengthened their marriage, with Morata joining Galatasaray on loan from AC Milan at the start of February. Now, however, as quoted by Spanish publication Diario AS, Morata is trying to force through a move to Spain, in the form of his ex-side Getafe. Morata joined Turkish giants Galatasaray in January after revealing he was back with his wife Reports have suggested the star split with Italian model Alice Campello after an argument on the pitch after Euro 2024 Reports of a potential move back to Spain for Morata are thought to have surfaced from Turkey. He then appeared to confirm that that could happen sooner rather than later, saying this week: 'I'm going to do everything I can to play for Getafe... I would like to return to Spain. I'll choose what makes my family happiest.' What makes his family happiest, though, may be staying in Turkey. Campello said: 'I think it's been very good for us to be in a place where we're alone again. 'We're relaxed there, with our family. People don't stop us so much on the street, and we can live a much more normal life, and at this stage of our lives, it's been good for us.' She also said of her relationship: 'We repeat it every day — I don't know how we could have made that decision. This experience has taught us both a lot because we understood what it's like to be without each other.' Morata also opened up on his battle against depression, admitting he almost did not make it to Germany to captain Spain to Euro 2024 glory. The forward, who received heavy criticism from both fans and journalists in the build-up to the tournament, said: 'When you have really tough times, depression, panic attacks, it doesn't matter what job you do, what situation you have in life, you have another person inside that you have to fight against every day and every night.' Getafe president Angel Torres, meanwhile, said: 'It's very nice. Since he left, he's said many times that he wanted to come back.

"But at the moment, I would say Gyokeres looks the more likely." The Swede is said to be considering going on strike to force his Sporting exit. Gyokeres is furious as he believes the club have broken a promise that he would be sold for £50million with a further £8million in add-ons. He has slammed Gyokeres last week, saying: "Sporting will not accept blackmail and insults – you should know me better by now. 'One thing is certain, we will not accept £50m plus £8m. As of now, Sporting has not received any bids for Gyokeres. "It was agreed that Sporting would not demand the release clause at the end of the season, especially because he was going to be 27. "We knew about Viktor's dream of going to a club where he could fight for the Champions League and we have common sense. "We guaranteed that we would not demand £85m. Sporting has common sense, it keeps its word." Sesko, 22, is also on Arsenal's radar and reports in Germany say they have agreed personal terms with him.
