Kobe Bryant believed the 2012 Team USA had a real shot at the 1992 Dream Team: "To sit there and say we can't, it's ludicrous" originally appeared on Basketball Network.
In 2012, Kobe Bryant joined a squad loaded with future Hall of Famers on Team USA's Olympic roster heading to London. With that kind of star power, the inevitable question came up: could this team go head-to-head with the legendary 1992 Dream Team?
As the squad's leader and most seasoned player, Kobe's take on the matter was highly anticipated. His verdict? A clear, confident yes — no doubt he and teammates like LeBron James and Kevin Durant could hold their own.
No team is untouchable
Bryant spent over two decades in the NBA, learning one clear truth: on the right night, sometimes everything has to align perfectly, and anyone can beat anyone.
Of course, the gap between the 2012 and 1992 Team USA squads wasn't massive — not quite David vs. Goliath. Still, the point remains that there are instances when underdogs rise and favorites fall — whether over a full season or a single game.
With that in mind, the Black Mamba was confident that in a one-and-done game, nothing was guaranteed. In fact, he was so sure that he fired sharp words at doubters.
"People who think we can't beat that team for one game, they're crazy," remarked Bryant, per ESPN. "To sit there and say we can't, it's ludicrous."
To back it up, the Los Angeles Lakers icon pointed to a forgotten footnote in basketball history.
"They got beat by a college select team once. Doesn't mean we're a better team than them, but s—, we can beat them one time," he said, referencing Team USA's loss to a group of NCAA players on June 24, 1992.
It was a reminder: even a roster with 11 future Hall of Famers like Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Karl Malone wasn't invincible after all.The Dream Team debate
Kobe's take carried weight — unlike most of his younger teammates, he said he had actually witnessed the Dream Team dominate the Olympics in Barcelona. But nostalgia didn't dull his edge. Had he faced them, Bryant noted he would've gone hunting. His Team USA teammate Chris Paul shared the same mindset.
"I was 7 at the time," said the Point God. "Even though I don't remember all the games, I used to collect all the [basketball] cards. But let me tell you something: As long as you know me, as long as I'm playing this game, you'll never hear me say that I think any man can beat me."
Hypotheticals like this ignite debate — CP knew Kobe's comment would stir one. However, he also understood that if his fellow player had said the opposite, it'd have made headlines too.
"What's he (Bryant) supposed to say if you guys ask him?" Paul asked. "Tell me what everybody would have said if Kobe said, 'We can't beat 'em.'"
Not everyone viewed it as level-headed, sparking back-and-forth debates in the media. However, one 1992 Dream Team member took a measured tone, avoiding a cross-generational dispute.
"This is starting to look a lot like our 1992 Dream Team. I look forward to watching them continue to drive for that gold medal and bring it home for the USA," Magic Johnson remarked early in the 2012 Olympics.
That's exactly what they did — Kobe, CP3 and a stacked Team USA outlasted Spain 107–100 in the final. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 26, 2025, where it first appeared.

US women's national team knocked off top spot by Spain in FIFA's latest rankings

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) — The U.S. was knocked off the top spot in FIFA's latest women's rankings by world champion Spain. Spain regained the No. 1 position despite losing to England in the final of the European Championship last month. The U.S. held the top position since August last year after winning gold at the Paris Olympics. Spain was No. 1 from December 2023 to June last year after its World Cup triumph. The latest rankings were released by world governing body FIFA on Thursday. England, which has won back-to-back Euros and lost to Spain in the final at the 2023 World Cup, moved up one place to fourth. Brazil dropped three positions and is seventh despite successfully defending the Copa America to win its ninth continental title. Sweden and France were big movers after impressive showings at the Euros. Sweden rose three places and is third after being eliminated on penalties by England in the quarterfinals. France moved up four places to sixth after also losing in the quarterfinals. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Newcastle United Women 1 Middlesbrough Women 1

The Lasses took on Boro at the home of Newcastle Blue Star on Wednesday in a fixture which allowed Newcastle to build up their minutes ahead of the 2025/26 WSL2 campaign. New signing Jordan Nobbs was handed her first start, while Małgorzata Grec came off the bench in the second half and summer arrivals Molly Pike and Aoife Mannion also featured. United dominated the ball throughout the game, with the opening exchanges being played in Boro's half, and the early pressure paid off. Freya Gregory, who looked a constant threat down the left-hand side, whipped in some dangerous crosses, including one towards the back post for Pike. Newcastle's second signing of the summer was on hand to cushion a technically impressive first-time volley into the opposite top corner. The tier-three side found a way back into the game late on when Millie Bell headed home from a Grace Boyes cross. The game offered a great opportunity for six of the club's Under 21 players - Ava Chapman, Ella Baker, Rose McCarthy, Amelia Freeman and Molly Wilson - to get minutes with the first team after coming on midway through the second half. Newcastle United Women: Claudia Moan (Hannah Hawkins), Charlotte Wardlaw (Rose McCarthy), Deanna Cooper (Małgorzata Grec), Aoife Mannion (Amelia Freeman), Freya Gregory (Ella Baker), Jordan Nobbs (Emily Murphy), Elysia Boddy (Ava Chapman), Emma Kelly (Lois Joel), Lia Cataldo (Jasmine McQuade), Molly Pike (Lily West), Beth Lumsden (Molly Wilson)

Enzo Maresca: Chelsea manager issues damning verdict on unwanted Blues stars

Enzo Maresca has plunged his unwanted Chelsea stars further into the cold with a brutal remark. The Italian is keen to oversee a fire-sale at Stamford Bridge to allow for the arrival of more fresh faces, while also cutting down the Blues' bloated squad. He has already allowed Joao Felix, Djordje Petrovic, Noni Madueke, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Kepa Arrizabalga depart among others. The Blues omitted nine names from their first-team squad list, including the likes of Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, and Carney Chukwuemeka. Chelsea have a much shorter pre-season than most, having won the Club World Cup back in July before giving their players three weeks off. The squad returned to training earlier this week ahead of two friendlies in three days, against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan. In his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Erik ten Hag's Leverkusen, Maresca said that he did not 'pay attention' to the players he had earmarked for an exit. He even admitted that he learned of one departure because his press officer had just told him. "The situation, I think, is quite clear. They are training, I guess they are waiting for a solution," said Maresca of those he deems surplus to requirements. "But when they leave, it's just the club that texts me or calls me, even Tom [media officer], he just mentioned to me that Lesley [Ugochukwu] joined Burnley. "I have this kind of news from him or from the club because I don't pay attention to the ones that need to leave. I just focus on how we prepare the session, how we can win games. "For sure, it's much better to work with 25 players than the biggest number, no doubt. At this moment, we are working with the ones that we want." Ugochukwu's £20million move to Burnley will make the Frenchman the second Chelsea player to move to Turf Moor, after Bashir Humphreys made the switch earlier this summer. Striker Armanda Broja is expected to join them, while Dewsbury-Hall's move to Everton for £25m was confirmed on Wednesday.
