Immigration dept busts sex trafficking rings in KL and Selangor, arrests 16 individuals
JIM deputy director-general (management) Ismail Mokhtar said all the individuals, aged between 19 and 61, were detained around Pandan Perdana in Kuala Lumpur and Seri Kembangan in Selangor.
'The modus operandi used involved offering prostitution services by foreign women by advertising their services on social media to attract customers.
'Customers between RM250 and RM1,200 per session, with payment transactions conducted either in cash or online,' he said in a statement today.
He added that the operation began at 7.15 pm, involving a team of personnel from the Intelligence and Special Operations Division of the Immigration Department Headquarters in Putrajaya.
Acting on public information and intelligence gathered over two weeks, the team was deployed to stake out business and residential premises and successfully apprehended two Malaysian men believed to be caretakers of the premises.
'Also detained were two Vietnamese men, seven Vietnamese women, four Indonesian women and one Laotian woman,' he said.
Ismail said initial checks found that one Vietnamese woman and one Laotian woman possessed valid Social Visit Passes; two Vietnamese men had overstayed, while the other foreign nationals did not possess any valid travel documents or passes for staying in the country.
He added that the team also seized 19 mobile phones, five Vietnamese passports, one Laotian passport, a work record book and a business transaction ledger.
All the detained foreign nationals, suspected of violating the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963, were taken to the Putrajaya Immigration Depot. — Bernama

Melaka JPJ cracks down on unlicensed foreign drivers
MELAKA: A targeted enforcement by Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) resulted in the arrest of six Myanmar nationals and the seizure of a luxury Toyota Alphard. State JPJ director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop said the foreigners, made up of five men and one woman aged between 25 and 30, were stopped at the Jasin toll plaza exit here at about 10am on Tuesday (Aug 12) during Operasi Pemandu Warga Asing (Op Pewa). The operation, she said, focused on foreign drivers without valid documents. "Checks revealed that none of the six could produce legal identification and the man behind the wheel had no valid driving licence. 'They were handed over to the police for further action," she said today. Siti Zarina said the vehicle, which was registered under the name of a Malaysian man, was also seized for investigation. She said throughout the operation, officers inspected 56 vehicles and found that 38 of them had committed various traffic offences. "In total, 119 notices were issued under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) and a total of 38 vehicles were seized, comprising 36 motorcycles and two cars. "The most common offences were driving without a licence, expired road tax, and the absence of insurance coverage," she said. Siti Zarina added that JPJ also carried out Ops Khas Luxury, an enforcement effort aimed at imported and high-end vehicles that fail to comply with traffic regulations. "Since January, we have seized 10 luxury vehicles for expired road tax and no insurance while seven of these were confiscated during 'Ops Luxury', which has been running nationwide since July 1,' she said. Among the vehicles seized were Porsche, Bentley, BMW, Tesla, Toyota Alphard and Kia models, with a combined estimated value of nearly RM5mil.

T'ganu Umno Youth faces backlash for inadvertent Jalur Gemilang mistake
PETALING JAYA: The Terengganu Umno Youth received brickbats online after posting an image of the Jalur Gemilang with only 12 stripes. This came in the wake of their recent criticism of others for making similar mistakes. The division had uploaded a social media post condemning the recent upside-down flag incident in Penang, as well as the death of bullying victim Zara Qairina. The post described the acts as "cruel, rude and heartless" and called for the harshest punishment for those responsible. However, sharp-eyed social media users quickly noticed that the Jalur Gemilang image in the post had only 12 red-and-white stripes instead of 14. Netizens were quick to point out the irony, with many posting sarcastic comments and sharing screenshots before the group replaced the image with the correct version. One user wrote: "YB Akmal Saleh, can you go to the designer's house and teach them how to draw the Malaysian flag?" Another commented: "We Malaysians are also very disappointed and angered by this careless act of using the wrong Jalur Gemilang. Don't delete the post, okay? Screenshots have been taken!" One user even compared the "before and after" versions of the post, while another remarked: "Did your boss not hold a class on how to draw the flag before posting? Don't turn your leader, YB Dr Akmal Saleh, into an embarrassment, aiyo. 'Don't act first, then apologise' — so it actually means, 'No need to apologise, just quietly fix it'. Now I get it." The division later replaced the image with a corrected version. In a later Facebook video, Akmal called on the authorities to investigate and prosecute the Terengganu Umno Youth member who produced a poster showing the Jalur Gemilang with the wrong number of stripes. "There are two stripes missing, and I have confirmed the mistake came from the person who designed the poster. We take responsibility," he said. Akmal stressed that he would not excuse the error, despite it coming from within his own ranks. On Aug 9, a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the national flag was found hanging upside-down outside his shop. The shop owner stated that it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected shortly after. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh had announced plans to stage a protest at the shop, but the gathering did not take place after police were stationed in the area and advised against it. Akmal has been vocal against improper displays of the Jalur Gemilang and said he wanted to visit the shop owner to "teach" him how to display it properly.

Bentong chopper crash preliminary report flags hot refuelling safety breaches
KUALA LUMPUR — The preliminary report on the Feb 6 Bentong helicopter crash, which killed a ground crew member, found that both the Indonesian ground crew and the pilot of the Bell 206L4 violated Safety Working Procedures (SWP) during hot refuelling a day before the incident. The Air Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said video footage showed the helicopter, registration PK-ZUV, undergoing hot refuelling without adherence to the prescribed SWP. 'Based on video footage of PK-ZUV conducting hot refuelling a day before the accident, it was observed that the crew from the Lessor did not adhere to the prescribed SWP. Such non-compliance poses a potential risk and could lead to unsafe conditions. 'Figure 5, Paragraph 1.4.1 (c), (e), and (f) (of the report) clearly define the SWP for conducting hot refuelling. However, as observed in Figure 6, the helicopter operator or the Lessor failed to adhere to these procedures,' read the report, published on the Transport Ministry's website. Hot refuelling is the process of refuelling a helicopter with its engine running and rotor blades turning, often used by the Bell 206L4 light helicopter to meet operational and time-critical needs. Under the SWP, this can only be done using a fuel drum and manual pump by trained personnel, who must wait at a safe distance until the helicopter lands. Once on the ground, the pilot must maintain the correct engine revolutions per minute and lock the landing gear, allowing the crew to approach only after a clear signal, such as a thumbs-up. The SWP further requires the crew to approach from the front or side where the pilot is visible, never from the rear due to tail rotor hazards, and to keep low without raising their hands while carrying refuelling tools. However, video footage from the day before the crash captured unsafe actions by both the pilot and ground engineer, creating potential hazards. 'The helicopter was hovering with its rotor blades still running while moving closer to the ground engineer, who was positioned directly beneath the main rotor disc. The crew was already positioned beneath the helicopter while it was still hovering and approaching for landing, indicating a clear violation of this procedure. 'Such non-compliance poses a potential risk and could lead to unsafe conditions,' the report stated. An Indonesian ground crew member was killed after being struck by the rotor blades, while the pilot suffered minor injuries when the helicopter crashed during a refuelling attempt near a hot spring pool at Kg Janda along the old Kuala Lumpur–Bentong road. The Bell 206L4, engaged in aerial work for Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) since Jan 21, reportedly lost control while hovering. Its skid partially struck the landing surface, causing the aircraft to topple and burst into flames. The post-impact fire destroyed the helicopter, leaving only the tail boom intact. The report also found that the lessor, PT Zaveryna Utama, had failed to meet safety regulations, while the lessee, MHS Aviation Berhad, was responsible for oversight and ensuring compliance with operational requirements. 'The absence of a Safety Officer from the lessee to supervise the hot refuelling process contributed to crew complacency, further increasing operational risks,' the report added. The report confirmed that the helicopter's maintenance complied with all regulations and approved procedures, and that favourable weather conditions played no role in the incident. — BERNAMA
