LDF, BJP on confrontational path over TDB decision to hold global Ayyappa devotees' meet at Sabarimala

The Hindu9 hours ago
The Travancore Devaswom Board's (TDB) decision to hold an international conference of Ayyappa devotees at Sabarimala in September appears to have put the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed by Hindu right-wing organisations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), on a confrontational path ahead of the local body polls in Kerala later this year.
Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan had last week projected the conference as a proactive measure to put Sabarimala on the global pilgrimage map.
BJP former State president Kummanam Rajasekharan termed the proposed conference a cover for the LDF government to undermine Sabarimala's ancient traditions and practices.
The VHP has criticised the proposed devotees' conference as a guise for the LDF to allow non-believers and political activists to use the revered temple as a bully pulpit for their disruptive propaganda.
Cong. silent so far
The Congress is yet to reveal its stance on the proposal. Nevertheless, it seemed not lost on opposing fronts in Kerala that the previous LDF government's socially sensitive decision to implement the 2019 Supreme Court decision to allow women of all ages into Sabarimala had triggered widespread protests backed by the Congress, the BJP, specific Hindu social organisations and a constellation of majoritarian right-wing outfits, rocking the government.
The State police's attempt to escort women, including those of childbearing age, a shibboleth challenged by the Apex Court, had resulted in violence, police cases and injuries on both sides.
2019 protests
The BJP said the LDF, 'which persecuted Ayyappa devotees in 2019 for upholding their faith,' had no moral right to hold an international conference of devotees. It alleged that the LDF had retracted from its promise to withdraw cases against Hindu women who held peaceful prayer meetings to protest against the government's bid to open Sabarimala to women of childbearing age.
Mr. Rajasekharan alleged that a cash-strapped LDF government was exploiting lakhs of Ayyappa devotees, who make the spiritual trek, for easy profit. He said the LDF government charged the Ayyappa devotees extortionately for providing below-par camping facilities.

Congress to launch state-wide voter list verification drive

After party leader Rahul Gandhi raised concerns over alleged discrepancies in the voter list, the Congress's Maharashtra unit has decided to keep a close watch on electoral rolls and conduct cross-verification across the state. Senior Congress leaders Babasaheb Thorat, Vijay Vadettiwar, Satej Patil and Vishwajeet Kadam were present for the orientation workshop. (HT PHOTO) The decision was taken during a two-day workshop, which started on Monday, at Khadakwasla, to provide orientation and training to newly appointed Congress functionaries in the state. Senior leader Satej Patil urged participants to nominate party workers willing to work exclusively on voter list scrutiny in their respective areas. 'They will study the voter lists in detail and verify entries on the ground,' he said. Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan accused the ruling BJP of 'robbing the electoral process' through vote theft, alleging that it was a ploy to 'destroy democracy' in the country. 'The Maharashtra assembly elections last year exposed this theft. What is democracy? It is its people, the right to vote given to them, and the principle of one person, one vote. The BJP robbed the entire electoral process by committing vote chori. This is their ploy to destroy democracy. A do-or-die situation now prevails in the country, and all opposition parties and citizens should oppose this tooth and nail.' He claimed the ECI's notice to Gandhi over his 'vote chori' remark is like 'a thief reprimanding a cop'. 'The party's base is built by its workers and strong leadership. The BJP is like a witch that feeds on Congress workers. In their bid for a 'Congress-mukt Bharat', they forget their party is filling up with former Congress members. If the chief minister looks at his cabinet, he will find more than half of the ministers are from the Congress,' he claimed. Senior Congress leaders Babasaheb Thorat, Vijay Vadettiwar, Satej Patil and Vishwajeet Kadam were present for the orientation workshop. (With Agency Inputs)

MP report card: Oppn stalling House proceedings as they don't have any issue to raise: Jugal Kishore Sharma

Serving third consecutive term as BJP MP from Jammu Lok Sabha constituency, 62-year-old Jugal Kishore Sharma had defeated Congress candidate and former minister, Raman Bhalla. Serving third consecutive term as BJP MP from Jammu Lok Sabha constituency, 62-year-old Jugal Kishore Sharma had defeated Congress candidate and former minister, Raman the 18th Lok Sabha completed its first year, here's a look at the MP's performance in the lower house of the Parliament and his plans for his constituency. (Sourced) Sharma polled 6,87,588 votes with a vote share of 52.8% against Bhalla's 5,52,090 votes with a vote share of 42.4%. In 2014, the BJP leader had defeated Madan Lal Sharma, a two-time Congress MP, by nearly 2.57 lakh votes. As the 18th Lok Sabha completed its first year, here's a look at the MP's performance in the lower house of the Parliament and his plans for his constituency. How would you describe your first-year experience? So far, very satisfying. Being an elected representative, I get a chance to serve my people. Not everyone gets the opportunity to serve society. I am trying to live up to the expectations of my people. What was the high point of the year for you personally and your party in the House? We succeeded in getting big projects for Jammu. We got the national highway project and are now trying to get it completed on time. Making the Samba-Mansar-Kishanpur Manwal-Udhampur road a four-lane highway was a long-pending demand of the people. We have succeeded in it and a DPR is being prepared. Similarly, Jammu railway station is being redeveloped from three platforms to eight. Though seven platforms in total were approved, we are discussing the eighth also. The work is on to make it an ultra modern railway station equipped with latest technologies like escalators, lifts, waiting halls, electronic stairs, and overhead bridges. There shall be two entries to the station from Trikuta Nagar side and from the Narwal side. Soon work on the modal station at Katra will be set in motion. The delay is happening because of a file stuck with the state secretariat. An agreement has to be made between National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) and the UT government. Are you satisfied with the number of sittings of the Lok Sabha? Not at all because of the unnecessary and frequent disruptions by the Opposition, especially Congress. They are stalling the proceedings of the Parliament because they don't have any issue. We hope Congress realises the futility of disruptions they cause over special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls because the issue pertains to the election commission. Due to the disruptions, MPs are not able to raise the issues of the people. What is the most effective way to raise issues of public importance in the House? We have been given the authority under Rule 377 and Zero Hour where we can draw immediate attention of the House and the government to the issues of people ensuring that their concerns are addressed timely. What constituency-specific issues were raised by you and what are your plans ahead? I am extremely happy that the Vande Bharat train now runs between Katra and Srinagar. It was a historic milestone and a big achievement for the people of J&K. Though Vande Bharat presently shuttles between Katra and Srinagar, by the end of September it will start operating from Jammu to Srinagar. I am also striving to ensure maximum benefits of central schemes to the people of border areas.

Peace irks oppn, Congress & SP divide people for political gain, says Pathak

1 2 Lucknow: Hitting back at Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav for his remarks on the Fatehpur incident, deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak said the SP and the Congress pursue the policy of divide and rule to gain political mileage. Pathak said that for decades, both the parties divided the country and the state on the lines of religion, caste, region, and language. He added that Akhilesh's statements were intended to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the state. "SP and Congress cannot tolerate a riot-free Uttar Pradesh. They want to exploit sensitive situations for vote bank politics," he said. Reiterating the BJP's vision, Pathak said, "Our commitment is not to appease anyone and to work for all. BJP govt works with the motto of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas' and implements welfare policies for the benefit of all sections of society." Claiming that communal violence was effectively brought under control by the BJP govt in eight-and-a-half years, Pathak said, "SP cannot digest peace. Leaders like Akhilesh repeatedly make statements that threaten to damage the social fabric." Speaking on the Fatehpur disturbance, Pathak said the govt took immediate steps to restore order, informing both sides of the facts and ensuring heavy police deployment. "Teams from 10 police stations, PAC units, and administrative officials were stationed to maintain peace," he said, adding that the situation was normal and those making claims over old structures had dispersed peacefully. He asked the opposition to stop "political opportunism" on the issue. He also highlighted the BJP govt's work in education, claiming a "renaissance" in the sector. He said over 27 lakh new students were enrolled under this year's 'School Chalo Abhiyan' and that Rs 11,500 crore was invested under Operation Kayakalp to provide 19 essential facilities — including drinking water, toilets, electricity, blackboards, furniture, and classroom repairs — in 96% of schools. He said under the Atal Residential School Scheme, schools were launched in all 18 divisions, offering free residential education, sports, labs, and skill training to over 18,000 children from underprivileged sections. "The education system during the SP govt had collapsed. According to a report of 2015, 3.45 crore children were deprived of schooling at the time. In contrast, our govt is consistently investing in modernising schools," he said. He appealed to opposition leaders to refrain from rhetoric that could harm the state's peace and development.
