BarkBox CEO apologizes after leaked memo exposes plan to axe ‘politically charged' Pride marketing
The subscription service delivers dog toys and treats to customers' door fronts monthly, and has been selling Pride-themed products as optional add-ons for the past four years.
'While celebrating Pride is something we may value, we need to acknowledge that the current climate makes this promotion feel more like a political statement than a universally joyful moment for all dog people,' a staffer said in the leaked message.

The employee argued that if BarkBox wasn't comfortable promoting 'another politically charged symbol (like a MAGA-themed product), it's worth asking whether this is the right moment to run this particular campaign.'
Meeker, who co-founded the $236 million company in 2011, on Wednesday confirmed the leaked message was from a BarkBox employee and issued an apology on the company's Instagram account.
'The message was disrespectful and hurtful to the LGBTQIA+ community, and as the CEO of BARK, I'm responsible for that,' Meeker wrote.
'I do not agree with the content of the message. It wasn't good, it doesn't reflect our values, and I'm deeply sorry that it happened.'
He said BarkBox is still selling Pride-themed dog products on its site, though he did not comment on whether the company killed its marketing push for the collection.
BarkBox did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether the marketing campaign was canceled.

The company donates a portion of the profits from the collection to an LGBTQIA+ nonprofit each year, Meeker said. It will up that commitment to 100% of the revenue this year, he added.
His apology followed swift backlash online from customers and former employees who slammed the message as offensive and hurtful.
'So @barkbox compared being LBGTQ+ to being MAGA, so if you give a f— about queer people, cancel your subscription today!' one user wrote in a post on X.

Another wrote: 'My former employer paused all marketing on Pride toys and cancelled donating the proceeds to a great org because… *checks notes* … a single bigot doesn't understand how BarkBox works? You literally have to CHOOSE and PAY MORE for the Pride toys.'
BarkBox is just the latest company entrenched in a scandal over its marketing of Pride products.
Mass boycotts against Target for a Pride collection that included kid's clothing and Bud Light for partnering with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney hurt the company's bottom lines.
Pride events taking place this month have seen some major sponsors retreat as they fear retribution from customers and the Trump administration, which has been targeting diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

Longtime sponsors of New York City's Pride March, including Mastercard, Citi, PepsiCo and Nissan, this year chose not to renew the funding.
'This isn't about backing away from support – it's about tone and ensuring our marketing remains inclusive and welcoming to everyone in our community,' the leaked BarkBox message said.
'Right now, pushing this promo risks unintentionally sending the message that 'we're not for you' to a large portion of our audience.'

We Asked ChatGPT Which Stocks Will Make You Rich by 2030
The well-known artificial intelligence bot ChatGPT can be an extremely useful tool for certain applications, such as compiling information from across the internet and presenting it in an easily accessible fashion. Fortunately, the AI bot also seems to know its limits, especially when presenting personal finance information. Although still a good guide and first step in your research, ChatGPT tends to offer caveats and hedges when it gives direct financial advice, particularly when it comes to picking stocks. Trending Now: Read Next: When asked which stocks will make you rich by 2030, for example, the bot came up with a list of popular, well-known stocks that it compiled from various analysts and internet message boards like Reddit. This makes it more of a compendium of stocks that are in the news or that are being pushed by average investors. While a good starting point, if you're going to invest in any of these stocks, you'll still have to do your own due diligence regarding their risk and reward characteristics and whether or not they fit with your personal financial objectives. With all of this in mind, here's the list of stocks ChatGPT provided when asked which ones will make you rich by 2030, along with a summary of the basic stock advice the bot provided in the same answer. Analyst Picks These are the stocks listed by ChatGPT as being highly recommended by analysts, along with their individual details. They cover a range of different industries and investment themes, from AI infrastructure and utilities to big tech, healthcare, global payments technology and even two spinoffs from GE. Microsoft (MSFT) Stock price as of July 23, 2025: $505.87 YTD performance: 20.48% Analysts' one-year target price: $543.08 Rocket Lab Corporation (RKLB) Stock price as of July 23, 2025: $49.15 YTD performance: 92.97% Analysts' one-year target price: $30.21 Intuitive Machines (LUNR) Stock price as of July 23, 2025: $13.37 YTD performance: -26.38% Analysts' one-year target price: $15.11 Tesla (TSLA) Stock price as of July 23, 2025: $332.56 YTD performance: -17.65% Analysts' one-year target price: $305.05 Investment Considerations After its list of stocks, ChatGPT followed with a fairly generic, overarching investment recommendation to 'diversify across trends,' 'adopt a value-growth framework' and 'stay themes-focused.' While there's nothing to argue about in terms of those sweeping generalizations, they aren't the kind of in-depth analysis that will lead you to specific winning stocks. You'll still need to do your own research and/or consult with a licensed financial advisor. 'No list is foolproof — market dynamics change. But if you're looking to ride the biggest long-term trends through 2030, these names are frequently at the center of analysts' and investors' radar screens,' ChatGPT wrote. Although it's all but certain that some of the stocks on this list will indeed prove to be winners through 2030, nothing is guaranteed. Some of the higher-growth, higher-risk stocks on the list may actually lose value, either over the full five-year period or in any given year. Investors should have an all-weather plan that allows them to adapt to both boom and bust periods with both their individual stocks and the overall stock market. Trump blasts Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon over bank's tariffs warning: ‘Focus on being a DJ'
President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Goldman Sachs boss David Solomon should go back to 'being a DJ' and teed off on the investment bank after it warned that US consumers will soon pay the brunt of tariff-related price hikes. Trump fumed over a revised analysis released Monday by Goldman's chief economist Jan Hatzius forecasting that households will soon cover 64% of tariff costs — after absorbing 22% through June. 'I think David should go out and get himself a new economist, or maybe he ought to just focus on being a DJ, and not running a financial institution,' Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. 3 Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon performs as DJ D-Sol at a music event. David Solomon/Instagram The slap at Solomon referred to the Wall Street titan's side gig as DJ D-Sol, which landed him in hot water with insiders at the bank as profits and morale declined after the pandemic. Trump went on to blast Goldman for being wrong about its predictions earlier this year that the economy could fall into a recession because of tariffs. Last month, the bank lowered the risk level of a recession to 30% from the 60% it had forecast following the 'Liberation Day' rollout in April. 'David Solomon and Goldman Sachs refuse to give credit where credit is due,' Trump wrote. 'They made a bad prediction a long time ago on both the Market repercussion and the Tariffs themselves, and they were wrong, just like they are wrong about so much else.' Goldman declined to comment. 3 Trump accused Solomon of refusing to acknowledge the benefits of his tariffs during a Truth Social post. Trump claimed the duties have poured 'trillions of dollars' into US coffers — a figure contradicted by Treasury Department data released last month that showed customs duties generated from April to June were $64 billion. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has projected the tariffs will bring in about $300 billion by the end of the year. Solomon had built a high-profile career while moonlighting as a DJ, performing at major festivals and releasing Billboard-charting tracks. 3 President Donald Trump (left) criticized Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon over the bank's warning that US consumers will bear more tariff costs. Inflation held steady in July, with the annual consumer price index at 2.7%, according to data released Tuesday. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, climbed to 3.1% in July, from 2.9% the previous month. Food prices rose 2.9% year-over-year, used car prices jumped 4.8% and gasoline fell 9.5%, as tariffs earlier this year added some upward pressure on core prices.

AI data wars push Reddit to block the Wayback Machine
As the battle to train artificial intelligence models becomes more intense and Reddit's rich content library becomes more valuable, the social media giant has taken steps to block the Internet Archive from indexing its pages. While the Wayback Machine has historically recorded all Reddit pages, comments and user profiles, the company has put limits on what the system can scrape. Moving forward, it will only be permitted to archive the site's home page, which shows popular posts and news headlines of the day, but no user comments or post history. The action comes as Reddit has become increasingly protective of the content on its site. Reddit, in May, announced it had struck a deal with OpenAI to use its content to help train ChatGPT. It previously announced a similar deal with Google – and blocked other search engines from crawling the site after that deal unless they struck financial agreements with Reddit as well. AI companies that are less well-financed, however, have reportedly been using the Internet Archive to scrub the site's previous posts and train their large language models from that content. Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt, in a statement, told Fast Company 'Internet Archive provides a service to the open web, but we've been made aware of instances where AI companies violate platform policies, including ours, and scrape data from the Wayback Machine. Until they're able to defend their site and comply with platform policies (e.g., respecting user privacy, re: deleting removed content) we're limiting some of their access to Reddit data to protect redditors.' Reddit shares were higher Tuesday, gaining more than 3% in midday trading, hitting $228. Year to date, the company's stock is up 38%. Reddit's legal battles meet its AI ambitions In June, Reddit sued Anthropic, claiming the AI company behind the Claude chatbot was scraping the Reddit site. 'In July 2024, Anthropic claimed, in response to Reddit's public protests regarding Anthropic's misuse of Reddit content, that it had blocked its bots from accessing Reddit. Not so,' the suit reads. 'Anthropic's bots continued to hit Reddit's servers over one hundred thousand times. … Unlike its competitors, Anthropic has refused to agree to respect Reddit users' basic privacy rights, including removing deleted posts from its systems.' (Anthropic has denied the accusations.) Reddit's latest defensive act against AI scraping comes as the company is focusing more on its own AI initiatives. Last December, the company rolled out Reddit Answers, an AI-powered tool that will summarize conversations and posts on the site, letting users bypass traditional search engines. That AI product is now used by six million people, the company said in its second quarter earnings announcement, up from one million in the first quarter. Reddit is planning to use that momentum, as well as the significant use of its own internal search engine (which the company says services 70 million users per week) to challenge Google and other popular search tools. 'The world and the internet are rapidly changing, and I believe Reddit has a once-in-a-generation opportunity,' said CEO Steve Huffman on an earnings call following the earnings. 'We're unifying [search and Reddit Answers] into a single search experience. We're going to bring that front and center in the app. So, whether you're a new user opening the app for the first time or returning user opening the app, that search box will be present immediately for users who open the app looking for something specific.' While Reddit's efforts in the search space will include AI components, the company said it hopes to differentiate itself from the growing number of AI search engines by highlighting the human component.
