Cardinals vs. Broncos: Preseason Game 2 Q&A preview with Broncos Wire

Heading into the preseason matchup, Broncos Wire managing editor Jon Heath takes Cardinals 'behind enemy lines'
The Arizona Cardinals face the Denver Broncos Saturday night. Kickoff from Empower Field at Mile High is at 9:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m. Arizona time). The two teams already had a joint practice on Thursday, so neither team will have starters on the field, save a few, in the actual game.
To get ready for the game, Broncos Wire managing editor Jon Heath answered a few questions to preview the matchup and take Cardinals fans "behind enemy lines."
Below are my questions and his responses.
Broncos' preseason opener
What was the good and the not so good from the Broncos' preseason opener?
First, the not so good: The starting defense allowed the 49ers to march down the field and score a touchdown on the opening drive, then the first-team offense stalled on their opening possession and Bo Nix took an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone for a safety on the second drive. The good: Denver's first-team defense bounced back, and the backup defenders had an excellent showing. The Broncos' first-team offense also managed a field goal on their third and final drive, and rookie running back RJ Harvey showed some flashes with the starters. This week, Denver fans will hope to see Nix lead a touchdown drive in his brief action.
Camp storylines
What have been the most interesting storylines in camp so far?
The running back battle is fascinating. J.K. Dobbins and Harvey are expected to carry the bulk of the load, but Denver has three other capable running backs competing for (at most) two spots. Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie and 2024 fifth-round pick Audric Estime all deserve a spot on a 53-man roster, but not all of them will be with the Broncos in Week 1.
Player standouts
Which Broncos players have stood out the most?
Trent Sherfield joined the team as a special teams ace, but he's turned heads on offense this summer. He'll be a player to watch. Undrafted rookie receiver Joaquin Davis has been a standout at training camp and outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper seems to be trending toward a breakout year.
Player health
How healthy is the team?
They're pretty healthy for this time of year. There are a few players with knocks, but overall, the Broncos are in pretty good shape. Sean Payton plays his starters in preseason, and typically into the second quarter in the second preseason game. After doing two joint practice this summer, though, Payton hinted that starters might not get extended action in Arizona. Nix and Co. will be out there, but probably not beyond the first quarter.
The starters will not play.
2025 expectations
What do the Broncos expect from the 2025 season?
Sean Payton has set Super Bowl aspirations. That doesn't mean they'll get there, but the Broncos haven't been shy about talking about it. After going 10-7 and reaching the playoffs last fall, Denver upgraded an already-stout defense and improved an underwhelming running back room. It remains to be seen if the Broncos end up being an actual Super Bowl contender, but they should be able to compete for a division title in the AFC West.

Sean Payton on Troy Franklin's breakout season with Denver Broncos: 'It's happening'

After watching what Troy Franklin was able to do during his three years in Eugene, Oregon Ducks fans have not been surprised by what they've seen take place this training camp with the Denver Broncos. Over the last several weeks, Franklin has turned a lot of heads in training camp, establishing himself as one of the top pass-catchers in the Broncos' offense. The biggest highlights came on Saturday night in Denver's preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals, where Franklin had four catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-7 win. Afterward, head coach Sean Payton was not shy about discussing Franklin's breakout and what he expects from the former Duck in his second NFL season. "It's happening, and I'm excited," Payton said of Franklin's breakout. "He's had a really good camp. He's confident. I've said this a bunch of times, it has to happen on the field, and you guys that have covered this team or any other team, you see it in the preseason every year. Some players begin to make some plays, and it carries over. So that's why these games are important. Obviously, it's challenging when you're not going to play your starting group, but when you see growth like that, and every year we don't know who those players are going to be, but he played well tonight.' Franklin still has to work his way up the Denver depth chart, competing with guys like Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., and Devaughn Vele, but with what he's shown so far this year, it's not difficult to see a world in which the former Duck carves out a large role in the Broncos' offense, working alongside Bo Nix. We will get to see one more week of Franklin and Nix in the preseason next week against the New Orleans Saints, and then the regular season action begins on September 7 against the Tennessee Titans. Eagles' Lane Johnson Shares Strong Thoughts on Jalen Hurts

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Since entering the national spotlight as the franchise quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts might be undervalued by outside eyes. When it comes to the All-Pro offensive lineman Lane Johnson, he has plenty of positives to say about the quarterback he's been blocking for over the past five years. What is it about Hurts that caught Johnson's attention early on—and continues to later on in the young quarterback's career? "I think it's his demeanor," Johnson told Ryan Clark of 'The Pivot' podcast. "The city's very rambunctious, very passionate. I think you need a guy who's very even-keeled. Emotions don't ever get high, even when we're winning. We win a Super Bowl. We smiled a couple of times, but it was back to work. When you have a guy like that, when he first came in, you don't know if it's the role he's playing, but that's how he's always been. For me, it allows guys to stay calm in pressure moments. Seeing a guy never get rattled." Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks on against the Cleveland Browns during the NFL Preseason 2025 game at Lincoln Financial Field on August 16, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Cleveland Browns defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 22-13. MoreHurts' calm persona once left many wondering if his leadership was up to par for an NFL quarterback. Over time, it became clear that Hurts may just be one of the best motivators at the position. While he might struggle to be a critics favorite when it comes to the "elite quarterback" conversation, nobody can deny that Hurts isn't a winner. Many point to the loads of talent surrounding Hurts as a primary reason why he's successful. Lane Johnson wants the world to know that Hurts carries a great work ethic with him. "With Jalen, man, he's always working," Johnson added. "You go in there before practice, he's got his own routine. It's never wavered since he's been a rookie. It only kept developing. Now, as he's aging, he's becoming more personable with the guys on the team. But he's always been the same leader, same demeanor from day one. Just more evolved over the past couple of years. I respect how he works." Hurts has started 66 games in the NFL. Since earning starter reps in 2020 as a rookie, Hurts has achieved a record of 46-20 during the regular season. He's thrown for 14,667 yards, 85 touchdowns, and just 39 interceptions. On the ground, Hurts has rushed for 3,133 yards and 55 touchdowns. He's been to two Super Bowls and was recently crowned the MVP of Super Bowl LIX after the Eagles took down the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson has played with a handful of quarterbacks throughout his career. At this point, Hurts is by far the most successful one. No. 1 might have a hard time winning over the critics, but it's clear that an eventual franchise legend for the Eagles sees the value in the two-time Pro Bowl passer. Former Packers QB Throws Brutal Shade at Coaching Staff

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Green Bay Packers are fresh off of a 23-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts in their second preseason game of the year. While they won the game, it was also their seconds straight ugly preseason outing of the year. So far, there hasn't been a lot for Packers fans to cheer about. On both sides of the football, the team has looked sluggish. Granted, the starters have not seen much playing time. Matt LaFleur has not been known to play his first team very much in exhibition games. However, there is some reason for concern about how unengaged the team has looked. Head coach Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers reacts during the second quarter of the game against the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field on September 29, 2024 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Read more: Packers QB Jordan Love Shares Significant Injury Update Kurt Benkert, who spent some time with the Packers and was a fan favorite, took to social media to share his sharp opinion about Green Bay. He has not liked what he has seen thus far during the team's two preseason games. "I don't care that it's preseason," Benkert wrote on X. "The product the Packers have put on the field looks disgusting. The games don't matter but have some pride in the performance at least a LITTLE bit." He continued on, shading the coaching staff for being "unprepared" even when he was on the team. "I dealt with this when I was there," he wrote. "We played against the Jets first team defense for an entire half and were completely unprepared for their nickel double mug package. It's frustrating when you're trying to put your best foot forward and you're not given a schematic chance." That is not a glowing opinion when it comes to head coach Matt LaFleur. Calling the team "unprepared" usually falls back on the head coach for not having his group ready to play. From a scheme perspective, that would also fall on LaFleur. Read more: Justin Jefferson Injury Update From Vikings' Coach Raises Questions It's possible that Benkert was not meaning his comments as a diss at LaFleur. Or, perhaps he was. Either way, the product that the Packers have put on the field over the course of two preseason games has not looked good. Hopefully, the team is able to get things firing on all cylinders by the time their Week 1 matchup with the Detroit Lions comes around. Only time will tell, but Benkert's comments certainly resonate for Green Bay fans. In a season that is expected to come with Super Bowl contention, at least seeing a team playing sharp football in the preseason would be nice.
