NVIDIA Bets Big On American AI Manufacturing Despite Stock Warning

I recently returned from NVIDIA's GTC AI Conference in San Jose, California. This year's event was completely sold out, with an estimated 20,000 investors, engineers and business leaders in attendance. CEO Jensen Huang likes to call the annual get-together the 'Super Bowl of AI,' and after seeing his keynote, I understand why.
Despite NVIDIA's stock flashing a bearish 'death cross'—its 50-day moving average slipped below the 200-day moving average for the first time since January 2023—the energy at the conference was electrifying. Every major industry was represented, from health care to defense, signaling that artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding at a white-knuckle clip.

During his approximately two-hour presentation (and he didn't use notes!), Huang described a future where AI agents will transform entire industries, making businesses more efficient, aerospace and defense more advanced and markets more intelligent.
In other words, if you thought ChatGPT was impressive, you haven't seen anything yet.
Huang spoke extensively about 'agentic AI,' or AI that doesn't just retrieve data but perceives, reasons and acts on your behalf.
In his example, AI agents 'can go to a website, interpret words and videos, maybe even play a video, learn from it, understand it—and then use that new knowledge to complete its task.'
To understand this better, imagine you work on Wall Street. An AI agent could scan earnings reports, build models and execute trades faster than a human could. In health care, AI agents will be able to diagnose diseases, assist in surgeries and manage hospital logistics—all with limited human supervision.
AI agents are on their way
Perhaps the biggest impact will be in aerospace and defense. Huang made a bold prediction: 'Everything that moves will be autonomous.'
This suggests a future with AI-powered drones, cybersecurity defense systems, battlefield robots and much more. The U.S. military is already testing AI systems that can independently identify threats and make tactical, split-second decisions in real-time.
As I shared with you last month, the global AI market in aerospace and defense is projected to surge from approximately $28 billion today to $65 billion by 2034, according to one research firm. That's a solid 9.91% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). North America alone represents $10.43 billion of this market, and it's growing even faster at 10.02% annually.

Under President Trump's administration, there's been a concerted effort to boost American leadership in AI. One such initiative is the Stargate Project, a collaborative venture involving OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle and MGX, which aims to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure across the U.S. by 2029.
Aligning with this vision, NVIDIA has unveiled plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in U.S.-based manufacturing over the next four years. The move seeks to reduce reliance on Asian supply chains, particularly in light of tariff uncertainties.
Speaking to the Financial Times last week, Huang remarked that, over the next four years, NVIDIA will buy 'probably half a trillion dollars' worth of electronics in total.' He added that he can see the company 'manufacturing several hundred billion of it here in the U.S.'
Even with all the excitement, NVIDIA's stock has formed a death cross, a technical pattern that typically signals near-term weakness.
But let's put things in perspective. After meteoric runs in 2023 (when it was up 238%) and 2024 (up 171%), some consolidation is natural, if history is any guide. Also, every Magnificent 7 stock, except Facebook-parent Meta Platforms, is underperforming the S&P 500 year-to-date.

I believe these dips can present buying opportunities. NVIDIA's fundamentals remain incredibly strong. In the fourth quarter of 2024, the company reported record revenue of $39.3 billion and record data center revenue of $35.6 billion. It also reported record full-year revenue of $130.5, more than double the amount generated just a year earlier.
Sitting in the audience at NVIDIA's GTC Conference, I could feel the same energy that surrounded the dot-com boom, the rise of mobile computing and the emergence of cloud technology.
Despite near-term market fluctuations, the investment case for AI remains rock solid. It's clear to me that companies that build AI, use AI or enable AI infrastructure will shape the global economy in the decades to come.

AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT have been shown repeatedly to provide false information, hallucinate completely made-up sources and facts, and lead people astray with their confidently wrong answers to questions. For that reason, AI tools are viewed with skepticism by many educators. So, of course, OpenAI and its competitors are targeting colleges and pushing its services on students—concerns be damned. According to the New York Times, OpenAI is in the midst of a major push to make ChatGPT a fixture on college campuses, replacing many aspects of the college experience with AI alternatives. According to the report, the company wants college students to have a 'personalized AI account' as soon as they step on campus, same as how they receive a school email address. It envisions ChatGPT serving as everything from a personal tutor to a teacher's aide to a career assistant that helps students find work after graduation. Some schools are already buying in, despite the educational world initially greeting AI with distrust and outright bans. Per the Times, schools like the University of Maryland, Duke University, and California State University have all signed up for OpenAI's premium service, ChatGPT Edu, and have started to integrate the chatbot into different parts of the educational experience. It's not alone in setting its sights on higher education, either. Elon Musk's xAI offered free access to its chatbot Grok to students during exam season, and Google is currently offering its Gemini AI suite to students for free through the end of the 2025-26 academic year. But that is outside of the actual infrastructure of higher education, which is where OpenAI is attempting to operate. Universities opting to embrace AI, after initially taking hardline positions against it over fears of cheating, is unfortunate. There is already a fair amount of evidence piling up that AI is not all that beneficial if your goal is to learn and retain accurate information. A study published earlier this year found that reliance on AI can erode critical thinking skills. Others have similarly found that people will 'offload' the more difficult cognitive work and rely on AI as a shortcut. If the idea of university is to help students learn how to think, AI undermines it. And that's before you get into the misinformation of it all. In an attempt to see how AI could serve in a focused education setting, researchers tried training different models on a patent law casebook to see how they performed when asked questions about the material. They all produced false information, hallucinated cases that did not exist, and made errors. The researchers reported that OpenAI's GPT model offered answers that were 'unacceptable' and 'harmful for learning' about a quarter of the time. That's not ideal. Considering that OpenAI and other companies want to get their chatbots ingrained not just in the classroom, but in every aspect of student life, there are other harms to consider, too. Reliance on AI chatbots can have a negative impact on social skills. And the simple fact that universities are investing in AI means they aren't investing in areas that would create more human interactions. A student going to see a tutor, for example, creates a social interaction that requires using emotional intelligence and establishing trust and connection, ultimately adding to a sense of community and belonging. A chatbot just spits out an answer, which may or may not be correct.

Alabama leaders call to preserve job training program amid Trump administration scrutiny
Moves in Washington D.C. could cost the Montgomery region 90 jobs and a yearly economic benefit of about $144 million, not to mention streams of newly trained workers, Mayor Steven Reed says. Reed joined U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Montgomery, at the Montgomery Job Corps campus Saturday morning to call for safeguarding the national training program. There is also a Job Corps campus in Gadsden. The Trump administration has called for the pausing of Job Corps programs at all 99 locations in the country by June 30. A Labor Department report cites low graduation rates and safety concerns on the campuses as reason for the pause. A federal judge has issued a stay in the administration's move. "We want to see a full reinstatement of the program, with full funding," Reed said, urging the public to contact their representatives in Congress and U.S. Senators to protest the plans to pause the efforts. Job Corps programs serve young people 18 to 24 with job training. While taking part in the program, participants are offered housing and meals on campus. Figures said continuing the training makes sense. "These are not a partisan issues, as the mayor has indicated," Figures said. "These are not things that fall along political lines. These are things that matter to real people. Creating jobs and maintaining a strong workforce is a bipartisan, shared, American ideal." The Job Corps program has real impact on the Montgomery region and the state, Reed said. Beloved UWS eatery Jacob's Pickles shuttered for roaches, rats, sewage
Upper West Side eatery Jacob's Pickles was abruptly shuttered this week following a slew of icky code violations. The Department of Health temporarily closed the Southern-style dining hotspot after the place showed evidence of rats and roaches. The restaurant was also cited for having an 'improper, inadequate, or unapproved' sewage disposal system. An inspection report revealed that the venue, located at 509 Amsterdam Ave. between 84th and 85th Streets, also allegedly failed to properly protect 'food, supplies, or equipment' from possible contamination sources. The shutdown took effect Wednesday with a statement from the restaurant claiming they'll be back open come Monday. 3 The Jacob's Pickles website said the restaurant was closed for renovations. Jacob's Pickles has had a C rating with the Department of Health since December. Owner Jacob Hadjigeorgis said in May 2024 he would move the American restaurant to a new location at 688 Columbus Ave., between 93rd and 94th Streets, after which he planned to open a new bar, Velvet Cowboy, inside the space Jacob's Pickles had occupied. It's unclear if Hadjigeorgis' plans have changed.
