Way-too-early Seahawks 53-man roster projection: offense
The Seattle Seahawks will begin their first of nine Organized Team Activities (OTA) practices on Tuesday. Though this portion of the offseason remains voluntary, roster battles will begin taking shape. With the Seahawks officially on the practice field, we've delivered our way-too-early 53-man roster projection for the offense.
Quarterbacks (3): Sam Darnold, Drew Lock, Jalen Milroe
The Seahawks are one of few teams that should carry three quarterbacks. They signed Drew Lock to be the veteran backup to Sam Darnold. Rookie third-round pick Jalen Milroe will be afforded an opportunity to slowly develop behind the scenes.
Running backs (4): Kenneth Walker III, Zach Charbonnet, Robbie Ouzts, Damien Martinez
The need for a fullback in Klint Kubiak's offense will probably prevent the Seahawks from keeping more than three natural running backs. Damien Martinez, Kenny McIntosh, and George Holani will compete for one spot. Rookie fifth-rounder Robbie Ouzts is the favorite to be the fullback.
Wide receivers (6): Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Tory Horton, Jake Bobo, Ricky White III
The Seahawks could go even lighter here with five wide receivers. If so, Jake Bobo and rookie draft-pick Ricky White III would compete with a slew of back-end players for the final gig. Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp are expected to do heavy lifting at wide receiver.
Tight ends (3): Noah Fant, Elijah Arroyo, AJ Barner
Noah Fant, Elijah Arroyo, and AJ Barner project as a solid trio at tight end. Brady Russell is converting to fullback and will battle Ouzts for the backfield blocking role. Fant, Arroyo, and Barner should make-up a high quality TE room in Seattle.
Offensive line (9): Charles Cross, Grey Zabel, Olu Oluwatimi, Christian Haynes, Abraham Lucas, Josh Jones, Jalen Sundell, Bryce Cabeldue, Mason Richman
There's plenty of competition for offensive line spots. This projection leaves guards Anthony Bradford and Sataoa Laumea off the roster. That means both rookies, Mason Richman and Bryce Cabeldue, make it. Veteran free-agent addition Josh Jones is the swing tackle in this scenario.

Patriots receive good news on injured veteran starter
All things considered, the Patriots received good news about an injured veteran starter on Tuesday. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Jahlani Tavai suffered a calf injury in Monday's OTA practice and the injury is expected to sideline him until training camp. Advertisement The veteran linebacker went down during a non-contact team drill. At the time, it seemed as though Tavai, 28, suffered a serious injury. The Patriots turned off the music and players circled around him, kneeling on the ground. By the time he got up, Tavai couldn't put any pressure on his left leg and needed help from teammates Jabrill Peppers and Michael Onwenu to get off the field. He was later taken off-site for further medical evaluation. Last year, the veteran led the Patriots in total tackles with 115. Tavai started 16-of-17 games played and also had five passes defended, two quarterback hits, a sack, and an interception. The Patriots have changed over their linebacker room under new coach Mike Vrabel. This offseason the team signed veteran free agents, Robert Spillane, and Jack Gibbons. The Patriots also gave linebacker Christian Elliss a new contract. The roster also includes Monty Rice and undrafted free agents Elijah Ponder and Cam Riley. Patriots QB coach details how Drake Maye is handling ups and downs of learning new system
FOXBOROUGH - Drake Maye had his best practice day Monday. At least, his best with the media looking on. And it wasn't close. After a four-pick outing two weeks ago, and an uneven performance last week during the second open session, Maye looked much more at ease in the new system during the latest OTA session. Advertisement Prior to the workout, Ashton Grant, his quarterbacks coach, talked about what it's been like working with Maye as he goes through the trials and tribulations of adjusting to a new system. '(It's been) awesome. I think he's a pro's pro,' Grant said. 'He's taken all the installs that we've been putting in, and has been running with him. 'He comes out here and puts his best foot forward every day. And we're continuing to get better.' There wasn't much question about that with Maye's performance Monday as he completed 14-of-16 passes during competitive drills. Completions aside, Maye got a little more aggressive, signaling a bit more confidence. Advertisement Asked how well he's picked up the intricacies and nuances of Josh McDaniels' system, particularly with regard to pre-snap responsibilities, Grant indicated Maye has a 'great grasp' of it thus far. And that's largely because the coaches have made sure to get in as many reps with Maye, as well as the other two quarterbacks, as possible. 'There's going to be a lot of repetition going from one system, to a completely new one,' he said. 'So as many as many reps as we can, and we're trying to steal as many as we can when we're inside. I think he's done a great job taking steps forward.' Asked what he feels Maye does really well, Grant pointed to implementing what he learns in the class room. Advertisement 'I think he does a good job of taking the meeting room to the field,' Grant said. 'So every day we come out here with different types of emphasis and what we want to work on, and every day he's really tried to attack those things, and really being intentional about his progression in the offense. 'This time of year as a quarterbacks coach has always been my favorite just because it's so directed towards passing. There's never a threat of the run for the defense, or play-action pass. So it's just a time for us to be able to focus on our fundamentals and technique, and be a little bit at a disadvantage, and try to see if we can take our coaching to the field.' Why ESPN believes ex-Patriots QB could revive career with 49ers
Mac Jones might be in the perfect spot to revive his NFL career. The quarterback signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March after spending a not-so-great 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Before that, Jones spent his first three years with the New England Patriots. Advertisement But things didn't go well in New England. After a promising rookie season in 2021, Jones couldn't build off that year, regressed and struggled to find a groove under center. Now in San Francisco, Jones will try to start fresh. And even though it's likely Brock Purdy will remain the team's QB1, ESPN's Bill Barnwell believes Jones is in the perfect spot to start over. And it's because of the path Sam Darnold took. 'If there's one player attempting to explicitly go on the Darnold rejuvenation path, it's Jones. Darnold restarted his career by joining the 49ers in 2023, where he spent the season as a backup to Brock Purdy,' Barnwell wrote. 'Darnold threw only 46 passes in a San Francisco uniform, most of which came in a meaningless Week 18 game against the Rams. Working with coach Kyle Shanahan apparently did enough to rebuild Darnold's confidence before he left for a one-year deal with Minnesota, though. You know what happened next.' Advertisement Darnold, like Jones, was a first-round pick and expected to help turn a franchise around. But his time with the New York Jets was disastrous. He then spent two seasons with the Carolina Panthers before latching on with the 49ers. Darnold's 10 appearances in San Francisco was enough for the Minnesota Vikings to take a chance on him where he turned in a 14-3 season as a starter en route to a Wild Card appearance. Darnold's performance earned him a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason. Whether Jones has a similar path to Darnold remains to be seen, but Barnwell believes Jones will have "best offensive infrastructure Jones has played in since his time at Alabama." "Jones probably isn't going to win the job away from the $265 million QB," Barnwell wrote, 'but don't be surprised if he plays well enough to get a more significant opportunity elsewhere on his next deal in 2026.'
