Munya Chawawa to give Alternative MacTaggart lecture at Edinburgh TV Festival
Chawawa, who has become known for his satirical impressions, will make the case for 'why broadcasters underestimate digital creatives at their peril and will issue a call to arms for creative risk'.
The annual Edinburgh TV festival, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, will also feature multi award-winning actress and comedian Tina Fey in conversation with broadcaster Graham Norton.
Audiences will be able to watch Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker be interviewed, while Stephen Lambert, the chief executive of Studio Lambert, the independent TV production company behind some of the UK's biggest entertainment shows including The Traitors and Gogglebox, will discuss his career and work.
Lambert will record a special edition of the podcast The Town, hosted by US entertainment journalist Matt Belloni.
Creative masterclasses include deep dives into the making of the biggest scripted and unscripted UK shows of the year, featuring Netflix crime drama Adolescence and reality TV show Last One Laughing.
There will also be a live script read of Disney comedy-drama Rivals, and 25 years of Big Brother will be marked with a session called How Big Brother Changed TV Forever.
Previously announced speakers include Sir Lenny Henry, who will receive the outstanding achievement award; Michael Sheen, who will be in conversation with advisory chairwoman Jane Tranter; and James Harding, editor-in-chief of The Observer and founder of Tortoise Media, who will be delivering the prestigious MacTaggart Lecture.
The festival's creative director, Rowan Woods, and Tranter said: 'This year's programme contains all the attributes and tonal variations of great TV: it's inspiring, thought-provoking, entertaining, attitudinal, glamorous, inclusive and actively relevant to our current challenging landscape.
'The 50th anniversary is a moment to look back and celebrate how far we've come, and the many people who've contributed to this remarkable legacy; but it's also an opportunity to look forward and ask what the future of British television looks like, how we define it, protect it and evolve it to meet the challenges ahead.
'We can't wait to see you in Edinburgh in August.'

Movie lovers have been left thrilled to see a fan-favorite character return in the latest Avatar installment. The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash - director James Cameron 's third film in the franchise - was released by Disney earlier today. The film is scheduled for December 19 - three years after the second film, Avatar: The Way of Water, reached screens. Instead, it was Payakan - a large marine whale-like species native to the oceans of Pandora known as a Tulkun - that caused a frenzy. The executive producer also shared that Payakan now has a female Tulkun friend, Ta'nok, who is also an outcast, and that there will be a deeper insight into Tulkun societal structures. Not only will there be a deeper look at the sea creatures, but there will also be an introduction to a new Na'vi clan as well - the Ash People. 'You'll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,' Cameron said at the 2024 D23 Expo, per Variety. 'It's an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it's also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. 'We're going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.'

Emily Atack and Danny Dyer 's new primetime ITV game show has been revealed, but its premise is raising eyebrows. It was revealed earlier this year that the pair, who both starred in the Disney+ hit Rivals, will front a Saturday night game show called Nobody's Fool. Bosses at the broadcaster brought in the pair in a bid to 'freshen up their entertainment talent', it was reported. The duo are reportedly set to receive a whopping £250,000 each for the gig, with the show expected to air next year. But similarities between Nobody's Fool and Rivals are said to have raised eyebrows behind the scenes. A source told The Sun: 'Rivals is the story of a web of rival individuals which is spun around a stately house, Penscombe Court, and their efforts to constantly outdo one another. 'That's exactly the basis for the new gameshow, which also has the background of a country pile and sees all the competitors try to outwit one another. 'Those in the know are already describing it as: "A game of intellect and deception" which could be the catchline for one of Jilly's novels.' Danny and Emily have been busy so far this year filming the second series of the smash-hit series, based on the racy books of Dame Jilly Cooper. Danny, who played pub landlord Mick Carter in EastEnders for almost a decade, is no stranger to game shows. The hardman previously hosted The Wall for the BBC, which ran for three series before ending in 2022 when Danny left EastEnders and the BBC. Mum-of-one Emily starred as a team captain on now-axed CelebJuice with Keith Lemon and Laura Whitmore. Danny recently revealed there is so much bonking in Rivals 2 – which is currently filming - that they have hired every intimacy coach in the UK. He said: 'We are doing 12 episodes of Rivals and we are filming until March next year. 'It is brilliant but it is a mad thing to do a sex scene. If you think about it you are legally allowed to tongue someone else. It is part of your job. Depending on your partner. It is OK if you fancy it, I am not going to lie.' He added: 'On Rivals there are a lot of intimacy coaches. I think we used every intimacy coach in the land.' In the smash hit Disney + show, based on the novel by Jilly Cooper, Danny played self-made businessman Freddie Jones who goes into business with Rupert Campbell-Black, played by Alex Hassell and Declan O'Hara played by Aidan Turner. In the show Jones falls in love with romance author Lizzie Vereker, played by actress Katherine Parkinson. The initial run was eight episodes but Disney + have asked for more this time around. Danny's performance as Jones has been hailed as bringing heart to the frothy, pulpy show, which has led to a reassessment of him as an actor, following his long-running stint in EastEnders. He was awarded a Bafta in May for his performance in Mr Bigstuff. He told Esquire magazine: 'People saw me in a different light[in Rivals], and it came out just after Mr. Bigstuff, which, for once, shows a bit of versatility, because Lee is so different to Freddie. 'I've made a lot mistakes over the years. I've said yes to a lot of jobs I probably shouldn't have, probably because I was driven by the dollar – I had bills to pay and kids in private schools. Now, I'm at a stage where I have loads of offers that I've got the power to say no to. I think I'll be defined by what I say no to, and it's really exciting for me.' On stage at the Baftas where he won the award to Best Male Performance in a Comedy he said: 'What a touch! Comedy performance. I thought my acting was so bad it was funny. I want to thank Sky for giving our show a shot. F***ing hell, I'm choked up. 'I got to dedicate this to (Mr Bigstuff writer) Ryan Sampson. One of the greatest things to come out of Rotherham. Which is not saying much. 'But one of the best actors this country's ever produced, I'm telling you. Never done the same thing twice. Which is not something I can say. He wrote this part for me, so you know... I'm getting choked up again, f**k me.'

Na'vi fight large-scale battles in first trailer for Avatar: Fire And Ash
The third film in the sci-fi franchise will see Emilia Perez star Zoe Saldana return to her role as Na'vi warrior Neytiri, and Sam Worthington back as marine turned Na'vi leader Jake Sully. In the trailer, the series' recognisable blue creatures can be seen doing battle on land, sea and in the air, while Jake and Neytiri are seen arguing, with Worthington's character telling Saldana's: 'You cannot live like this, baby, in hate.' Avatar: Fire And Ash will also star Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass and Kate Winslet. The latest edition to the franchise has a screenplay by director James Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and a story by Cameron, Jaffa, Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. The film will be released in cinemas worldwide in IMAX 3D, Dolby Cinema 3D, RealD 3D, 4DX, ScreenX, and premium screens on December 19 2025. It comes after Cameron revealed the upcoming film's name at a Disney fan event in California, which he appeared at last year alongside Saldana and Worthington. He told the 12,000-strong audience: 'The new film is not what you expect, but definitely what you want.' The 70-year-old said 'we are not going to show footage today, it is too soon' but shared 'cool concept art to tease your imagination' which featured the characters in the sky and surrounded by fire. He also teased a new character that audiences will 'love to hate'. He added: 'There are new cultures and settings and creatures, and new biomes. 'You will see a lot more of Pandora, the planet, that you've never seen before.' The Avatar film series has previously seen the release of Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), along with a number of spin-off video games, toys, theme park rides and soundtrack albums. The franchise's fourth and fifth films are also already planned for release.
