Aidan O'Brien says Delacroix 'on York programme' not Glorious Goodwood path

The Ballydoyle trainer confirmed the Coral-Eclipse Stakes winner will head to the Juddmonte International despite bookmakers' slashing his odds for the Sussex Stakes on Thursday
Aidan O'Brien insists Delacroix remains on course for next month's Juddmonte International - despite a wholesale gamble on the Coral-Eclipse Stakes hero for the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

The beaten Derby favourite, who redeemed his reputation with a neck defeat of Ombudsman over a mile and a quarter at Sandown Park 12 days ago, was available at 16-1 on Wednesday for the Visit Qatar-sponsored Group 1 test. Market support down to 5-1 triggered speculation Delacroix would step back to a mile for a clash with Sussex Stakes hotpot Field Of Gold, an imperious winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes on his last two starts.

William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: 'We're less than two weeks away from the Sussex Stakes, and the much-anticipated clash between Field Of Gold and Delacroix could be coming sooner than we thought.

'The Juddmonte had seemed their potential first head-to-head, but we've taken notable money for Aidan O'Brien's Eclipse hero to see him more than halve in price for the Sussex.
'He's now a 5-1 shot from 16s, and while he still has a way to go to get to Field Of Gold at 4-7 favourite, his price collapse could suggest that Ballydoyle are seriously considering dropping him back to the mile.

"We'd still expect Field Of Gold to be very hard to beat over this course and distance, but their meeting would be a tantalising prospect for racing fans.'
But O'Brien stressed the Knavesmire on August 20 - he is set to be joined in the York line-up by Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) victor and Eclipse fourth Camille Pissarro - is still next on the Dubawi colt's to-do list,
Ballydoyle's Henri Matisse, winner of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas) at Longchamp before a second to Field Of Gold at Royal Ascot, will seek revenge on his John and Thady Gosden-trained rival on the South Downs in 12 days' time.
'The plan for Delacroix and Camille Pissarro is that they are both on the York programme,' O'Brien reported on Thursday. 'Henri Matisse will go for the Sussex.'
O'Brien's Minnie Hauk is William Hill's 2-9 favourite to add Saturday's Irish Oaks to her triumph in the Epsom original after a total of seven rivals were declared for the Curragh Classic yesterday.

York sports charity bids to buy hall used by railway since 1926

A charity which runs sports clubs for all ages has launched a campaign to buy the hall it has used for a Railway Institute's lease on the Queen Street venue expires in 2027, but owners Network Rail have given the organisation the option of purchasing the site from charity now needs to raise £100,000 in its centenary year to secure the future of the building it has occupied since Poulter, coach of York RI Juniors badminton team, said owning the sports centre would give people an chance to "be part of our future, as well as our past". "There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of people in and around York who have played sport at the RI," he Railway Institute was established in the 19th Century as a place for the city's railway workers to improve their education, and it had a library, classrooms and a dining locomotive erecting shops and carriage works next door were converted into a gymnasium by 1926, and there was a boxing ring which was later replaced with badminton Institute still hosts badminton tournaments at national level, as well as activities such as pickleball, squash and Heather Robertson said it was fitting that the chance to buy the "much-loved" venue coincided with the centre's upcoming 100th anniversary. "Due to various works around the station, and the York Central development scheme, we've felt a little like we're on borrowed time."We've had really good support from Network Rail, especially since Covid, but the time has run out on that lease arrangement."Ms Robertson added that if the charity could not raise the funds in time, it would impact the clubs that used the facility, many of which compete under the York RI name. "If this did disappear, you'd hope those clubs would survive and find a different venue but that seems like a difficult thing to do," she said."It not a case of just picking a different sports centre - there's nothing like it in terms of location and what it offers as a venue." Dermot Heslop, a judo coach and York RI treasurer, said the venue meant "an awful lot" to his family, who had been involved since the 1940s through working on the railways."If we can buy the building it gives me an opportunity to say thank you to the Railway Institute for everything it's done for me as an individual," he said."When you think of the demographic in York, there are people in their 80s who are playing here and there are children under the age of five."We have nationalities from all over the world that come to the venue."A Network Rail spokesperson said the organisation was "delighted to support the long-term future" of the York RI."Our teams have been working collaboratively with York RI to secure this historical building's future as a community sports facility," they said."This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting local communities whilst preserving railway heritage, and forms part of our broader Queen Street estate plans."York RI has a number of fundraising events planned until 2027, starting with a 24-hour "badminton-athon" on 2 Avey, supervisor at the centre, said that there was a "massive emphasis on community" among the teams that used the space."I'm excited to see how everyone is rallying around, that's a reflection of how much people love the place and want to keep it open."It would be such a shame for it to go, it would be so upsetting." Diego Velazquez prevails in Minstrel Stakes

Aidan O'Brien's son of Frankel was winning for the fifth time in his 10-race career, but was tackling the shortest distance he has encountered since making a winning debut over the same course and distance as a two-year-old. The 11-8 favourite for the Group Two event in the hands of Ryan Moore, he was well away and always in a handy position alongside Adrian Murray's Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up California Dreamer. Moore may have been low in the saddle inside the final quarter-mile but he had a willing ally and although the challengers were queuing up a furlong from home, it was only David Marnane's 25-1 shot East Hampton who emerged from the pack to lay down a stern challenge in the closing stages. Diego Velazquez, however, was never headed and even though East Hampton was within a neck at the winning post, the class of the Ballydoyle colt was always keeping him on top. O'Brien said: 'A mile is probably his trip. We were preparing him for Ascot and we had him in the stalls at Leopardstown, but he got upset and had to be withdrawn (from the Amethyst Stakes) and that upset his Ascot plan. 'I wasn't confident enough to tell Ryan to ride him as forward as he would have liked (in the Queen Anne Stakes) because he hadn't had a run. They only walked the first half of the race, so it was a non event really. 'We knew he would come forward a lot from then to today and he did well to win today over seven. He's a brave horse and Ryan gave him a good ride. 'He's a very well-made horse – powerful, strong, a great walker. Physically as a specimen he's a tank really. 'We'll go back up to a mile now for the Sussex or the Jacques le Marois, something like that. 'He'll have no problem getting back up to nine furlongs or a mile and a quarter at the end of the season.'
