Govt asks seafood exporters to explore new markets amid US tariff hike
Addressing a press conference, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh said alternative markets are available for India's seafood exports.
"The EU, Japan, South Korea, UK, Russia, Australia, West Asia, South East Asia and many countries are available for export of Indian seafoods," he said. "We have asked them (exporters) to face the current challenge bravely. There are alternative markets available... Where there is a will, there is a way," Singh added.
The minister emphasised the need for improving value addition and packaging before reaching other markets.
"We have told them that before reaching other markets, there is a need to improve value addition and packing. We have asked to work in this direction," he noted. Singh also asked exporters to take advantage of the Fishery Infrastructure Development Fund to upgrade and strengthen value-addition, processing and packaging facilities. To address export concerns, the Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has been asked to meet exporters in four major producing states and help them prepare for new markets. The minister said MPEDA will help identify specific fish varieties, value addition, and modernising processing and packing infrastructure. "We had a fruitful meeting. Some positive suggestions were made," the minister said.
Ministers of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying S P Singh Baghel and George Kurian, and Fisheries Secretary Abhilaksh Likhi were also present. When asked if exporters demanded a financial package to tide over the current difficult situation, Singh said: "A few days back, the Prime Minister had clearly said that we will not compromise on the interest of farmers. All exporters said they side with the PM on this issue and accept the challenge and look for new avenues." Exporters have identified new markets and have started exploring them, he said. More than 50 individual exporters and representatives of key fish-growing states attended the meeting.
The minister said exporters have made certain suggestions to be included in the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) during the 16th Finance Commission. He said the government has come out with draft guidelines on fishing in high seas and Exclusive Economic Zones, and sought public comments within a month. "This will harness fisheries, especially tuna fish in Lakshadweep islands and Andaman and Nicobar and give a further boost to India's export," he added.
Last week, the US further increased reciprocal tariffs from 25 per cent to up to 50 per cent on Indian goods.

HC upholds higher compensation for farmers who lost land for Mumbai-Delhi freight corridor
MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court dismissed an appeal filed by the central government, challenging a substantial hike in compensation for acquired lands in Palghar for the Mumbai–Delhi dedicated freight corridor. Initially, in 2018, the compensation offered in exchange for land was ₹2,362 per square meter, which was challenged by the land owners in a lower court. In 2021, the court raised the compensation to ₹6,300 per square meter, an appeal against which was dismissed by the court on Wednesday. Bombay High Court (Anshuman Poyrekar/HT PHOTO) The dispute dates back to 2018 to the acquisition of land in Saphale, Palghar, for the construction of a dedicated freight corridor of 1483 km from JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) in Maharashtra to Dadri in Haryana. Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. (DFCCI), a corporation established by the Ministry of Railways, was appointed to undertake the planning and development, mobilisation of financial resources and construction, maintenance and operation of dedicated freight corridors (special railway projects). For the project, DFCCI acquired the land of five farmers in the village at a fixed compensation of ₹2,362 per square meter. Dissatisfied with the offered compensation, the five land owners invoked the provisions of the Railways Amendment Act, 2008, and approached the Thane Arbitral Tribunal in 2018, seeking a rise in the compensation amount. Following this, the tribunal on January 18, 2021, passed a judgement, raising the amount to ₹6,300 per square meter. DFCCI, in turn, challenged the award in the arbitral tribunal in 2021, which was dismissed in March 2024. Following this, DFCCI moved the Bombay High Court in 2025, requesting to set aside the arbitral tribunal's March 2024 order, claiming that the court grossly erred in fixing the market value at the rate of ₹6,300 per square meter by taking into account the rates of land in neighbouring villages. Noting that the facts and legal issues were 'squarely covered' by that earlier ruling by the lower court, the division bench of chief justice Alok Aradhe and justice Sandeep Marne dismissed the appeal. The high court stated that after the 2015 amendment to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, under which the DFCCI appealed to set aside the raised compensation, the parliament incorporated the clarification to ensure that the phrase 'fundamental policy of Indian law' is narrowly construed so as not to entail a review on merits of a dispute, unless there is fraud, corruption, or a contravention of the fundamental policy of Indian law. The bench noted that DFCCI had not challenged the award on grounds of fraud or corruption or in contravention of the fundamental policy but the only contention which has been urged is that the tribunal erred in taking into account the rate of land in neighbouring villages for ascertaining the market value of the subject land.

Dogs & Indians Not Allowed: The Signboard That Sparked a Lifetime of Resistance
1 2 Nagpur: At 95, her voice still carries the conviction of youth. From the verandah of her modest Nagpur home, surrounded by fading black-and-white photographs, Leelatai Chitale recalls the precise moment that set her life's course. Outside a British-run hotel in the early 1940s, she saw a signboard that read: "Dogs and Indians Not Allowed." "It was not just an insult to me," she said, her eyes moist yet defiant. "It was an insult to every Indian - to our dignity, our humanity. I knew then that I had to fight, whatever it took." A Turning Point in Adolescence Chitale was just 10 when she encountered that signboard. British officers were welcome inside; Indians were not. "We were made to feel like intruders in our own land," she recalled. The sting of that humiliation became the cornerstone of her political awakening. She began attending meetings organised by student activists and was soon part of underground networks - distributing pamphlets, participating in protests, and helping fellow freedom fighters from police crackdowns. Facing the Crackdown Nagpur was a hub of resistance during the 1940s, and British repression was swift. Chitale narrowly escaped arrest during a 1942 student protest. "The police were brutal. We were chased, beaten, and threatened. I narrowly escaped arrest only because I was underage, though I still spent several hours being held at the police station. But fear had no place - the humiliation we endured was far worse than any beating." She credits the courage of the women who fought alongside her, often defying both colonial power and conservative social norms. "We didn't just fight the British; we fought mindsets that believed girls should stay home. As women, we were very determined." Ideals That Endure Even now, Chitale remains active in community work, often speaking to schoolchildren about the freedom struggle. Her reverence for both Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar is unwavering. "Gandhi gave India its conscience; Ambedkar, its structure. Without either, the Constitution is incomplete." She warns that it must be harder to amend, to prevent political misuse. Religion in politics draws her sharpest criticism. "We fought to unite this country, yet leaders today use religion to divide. My only identity is Indian." From Camps to the Constitution A veteran of youth camps that taught service before self, Chitale laments that today's generation is encouraged to accept before giving. Her advice to young Indians is blunt: "Think for yourself. Don't be a pawn. Learn your rights and defend them." Her memories mix admiration and disillusionment - praising former Premier Indira Gandhi's early leadership but calling the 1975 Emergency a betrayal. She also joined Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra, finding him "genuine and sincere" with "the qualities to make a remarkable Prime Minister. " The Tiranga and the Unfinished Fight For Chitale, the Tiranga remains more than a flag - it is a reminder of unity, courage, and justice. "From August 15, 1947, we became Indians first. The fight for India didn't end that day - it will never end. It is yours to continue." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
