Bobby Bonilla Day: Mets Still Pay Ex-Player Over $1M a Year
But the six-time All-Star still gets paid from a different former team – the New York Mets — in the form of a $1.19 million check every year on July 1.
"It's bigger than my birthday," Bonilla told USA TODAY Sports. "When that day comes, I get texts all day long, and couple of days after, and maybe a day or two before. Everybody just seems to love that day and have fun with it. It's become a pretty big thing."

The Mets wanted to buy out the remaining $5.9 million on Bonilla's contract after the 1999 season, but instead deferred the payments to $1,193,248.20 annually, paid on July 1, starting in 2011 through 2035.
Bonilla played his last game for the Mets in 1999. At the time, the contract deferment seemed like a good idea, ESPN notes, as the Mets were "invested" with Bernie Madoff and expected large returns, but took heavy losses in the scandal. The Madoff investments nearly "ruined" the team, the New York Times wrote.
Bonilla, meanwhile, will be 72 when his payments stop. An 8% interest was negotiated, which means the former MLB player will get almost $30 million from the deal, ESPN notes.

As far as the trade market goes, there are not many known receivers on the block. The big, documented trade request from a receiver is from Commanders' Terry McLaurin. New York could pounce on McLaurin, but it is unlikely that the Commanders are willing to trade their star receiver and face of the franchise. Outside of McLaurin, it is a bit unknown if any other game-changing receivers are available. The Jets may be looking for more depth than anything, but there just aren't yet a ton of options. With rosters needing to be finalized by Tuesday, the trade block will become a more popular place after the final preseason games. The final two or three days before roster finalizing day could be when New York makes its move to get some help in the receiver room. All-Star pitcher Jacob deGrom to miss scheduled start for Texas Rangers due to shoulder fatigue
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Texas Rangers are going to skip Jacob deGrom's scheduled start this week because of shoulder fatigue, but the club said it is merely managing his workload and he is not expected to spend time on the injured list. The five-time All-Star, who was supposed to start Wednesday night in Kansas City, was examined in Texas by Dr. Keith Meister, and the checks came back clean. That means deGrom could make his next start as soon as next week. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has pitched 140 1/3 innings across 24 starts this season, going 10-5 with a 2.76 ERA. That is by far the most innings deGrom has thrown since 2019, when he eclipsed 200 for a third consecutive year with the New York Mets. The right-hander missed most of the 2022 season with a stress reaction in his shoulder. He underwent his second Tommy John surgery the following year, and made it back in time to make three brief starts last September.
