Modi breaks Indira's feat with unbroken PM stint
Modi, officials noted, completed 4,078 days in office on Friday. Gandhi was in the office in an unbroken stint for 4,077 days, from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.
The record for the unbroken stint is held by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister. Both Modi and Nehru led their respective parties to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.
Nehru, who remained at the helm from August 15, 1947, till his death on May 27, 1964, had an uninterrupted tenure of 6,130 days.
As an elected head of a government, in state and at the Centre, Modi already enjoys the longest stint.
He became Gujarat chief minister in 2001 and remained in office before taking over as prime minister in 2014. Modi, the first prime minister born after Independence, is also the longest serving non-Congress PM. The officials noted that the Gujarat-born leader is the only non-Congress leader to complete two full terms as the head of the central government.
"Modi is the only leader in India, among all PMs and CMs, to win six consecutive elections as the leader of a party -- Gujarat assembly polls in 2002, 2007 and 2012, and the national elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024," an official said. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated Modi for completing 4,078 days in office, and termed it as a "historic achievement".

TMC's ‘vote chori' label turns INDIA bloc's war cry in fight against SIR
1 2 Kolkata: TMC on Thursday decided to step up its opposition to the proposed special intensive revision of voter rolls that the party believes will lead to large-scale deletion of voters. Along with its INDIA bloc partners, TMC will agitate at Nirvachan Sadan mid-next week. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will convene a virtual meeting of all TMC netas on Aug 8 to chart the road ahead. B'deshi armed group under scanner of Mizoram Police
1 2 3 4 Aizawl: Senior police officials in Mizoram are reportedly taking a serious view of the alleged illegal activities of the Parbottya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), a Bangladeshi armed group led by Jyotirindra Bodhipriyo Larma alias Santu Larma, in both Mizoram and Tripura. A senior police official said appropriate action will be taken against the Bangladesh-based Chakma outfit if its cadres are found venturing into Mizoram and indulging in illegal activities, as they have reportedly done in the past. Hundreds of people, both tribals and non-tribals, on Wednesday protested at Nutan Bazaar in South Tripura, submitting a memorandum to their CM Manik Saha, demanding expulsion of members of the Bangladeshi armed group from India. According to the memorandum, the PCJSS (Santu faction) has been accused of spoiling the lives of youths in the northeast through drug trafficking, using India as a shelter after committing murders in Bangladesh, and also carrying out anti-India activities from Bangladesh. This includes the alleged formation of the Tripura United National Front (TUNF) and sheltering them in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs) of Bangladesh. In India, members of the PCJSS (Santu) group are allegedly involved in trafficking of arms, drugs (including Yaba tablets), Burmese cigarettes and cows, which protestors claim is "destroying the youths of Tripura and Mizoram." The memorandum detailed recent seizures linked to the outfit's activities. Last year on Dec 30, Tripura Police reportedly seized 2,720 Burmese cigarette packets worth Rs 9 lakh from Raishyabari in Dhalai district. Recently, on June 19, the Assam Rifles reportedly seized drugs worth Rs 10 crore from Lunglei town in Mizoram. Furthermore, on Feb 12, Mizoram Police reportedly confiscated a significant cache of weapons. On June 4, Tripura Police arrested 13 cadres of the group and subsequently deported them to Bangladesh. The protestors alleged that the PCJSS (Santu) has evolved into a "transnational trafficking gang."

Ghose panel submits 650-page Kaleshwaram report to govt
1 2 Hyderabad: After a 15-month probe into the sinking of some piers of Medigadda barrage and damages to Annaram and Sundilla barrages, which are part of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme (KLIS), the Justice PC Ghose one-man commission submitted its report to Telangana govt on Thursday. Justice (Retd) Ghose handed over the nearly 650-page report, which runs into three volumes, to principal secretary, irrigation, Rahul Bojja at the secretariat on the last date of the commission's extended term. Now, the govt will study the report and act on that," Justice Ghose, a former Supreme Court judge, told the media. As promised in the run up to the 2023 assembly polls, the Congress govt ordered a judicial inquiry into the Kaleshwaram project and issued a gazette notification to this effect on March 14, 2024. Justice (Retd) Ghose began his probe in May, 2024. The findings of the commission might echo in the political discourse of the state and all future polls, including the upcoming rural and urban local bodies elections. Kaleshwaram project, touted as the lifeline of Telangana by the previous BRS govt, had created a political storm in the state just before the 2023 assembly polls. Parties blame BRS for flaws The ruling Congress has been blaming the previous K Chandrasekhar Rao-govt for the Kaleshwaram damages. Some retired engineers and irrigation experts say, no other irrigation project has become such a "major controversy" in the country. Irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy had earlier described Kaleshwaram lapses as the "biggest man-made disaster in independent India", and also said there were many lapses right from design flaws, structural and maintenance issues, no quality control apart from financial mismanagement. Congress alleged that even after spending over 1 lakh crore, the KCR govt could not create even a lakh acre new ayacut. BJP also blamed BRS for the Kaleshwaram lapses. Political game to intensify Congress, BRS and BJP might use the findings of the commission to their advantage during the campaign in future polls, even in the forthcoming rural and urban local bodies elections. The ruling Congress and BRS are eagerly waiting for the report as ex-CM K Chandrasekhar Rao and former irrigation minister T Harish Rao were summoned by the Ghose commission . Many of the irrigation engineers said the location of Medigadda barrages and all major decisions pertaining to Kaleshwaram projectwere taken by KCR himself .
