'West Side Story' actor Carole D'Andrea passes away at 87

Khaleej Times20-03-2025
West Side Story star Carole D'Andrea has passed away at the age of 87.
The actress originated the role of Velma in the 1957 Broadway production of West Side Story before reprising the role in the classic 1961 movie musical adaptation, reported People.
In a post on their mother's Instagram page, D'Andrea's daughters wrote, "Dear Facebook/ Instagram friends of Carole D'Andrea, This is @andreadoven , @robinmorse708, & Hilary @hilaryhigh, Carole's daughters. We are writing to let you know that our beloved mother passed away peacefully at home this past Tuesday, March 11th due to heart failure.
"It was a privilege to be by her side as she passed, and to witness in these last few weeks the grace and courage in which she carried herself as she prepared to, as our Godfather put it, 'exit stage left'," they added. "She also died on her 44th AA sobriety anniversary, which she said was 'the day that I changed my life'."
"She told us many times in her last few days what a quality life she led as a mother, grandmother, performer, and teacher," their message continued.
D'Andrea was born on August 28, 1937, in Altoona, Pennsylvania. At 16, she turned down a scholarship to Penn State University before pursuing acting in New York after her parents died in a car accident.
After playing Velma in the Jerome Robbins' production of West Side Story in September 1957 at the Winter Garden Theatre, D'Andrea played Dainty June in Broadway's Gypsy in 1959, reported People.
She was married to the late actor Robert Morse, whom many know from Broadway and Mad Men, from April 8, 1961, until their divorce in 1981. The pair shared three daughters: Robin Morse, 61, Andrea Doven, 63, and Hilary Morse, 59.
D'Andrea is survived by her three daughters, as well as her grandchildren, Lucia, Francis, Jagger, Marlon and Lance.

Pakistani singer Hasan Raheem ties the knot: Internet celebrates Gen-Z star's wedding

You may know him from breakout hits like Joona, Aisay Kaisay and Wishes: songs that made him a Gen-Z sensation and had entire timelines humming along. Now, Hasan Raheem has given his fans another reason to buzz. The Pakistani singer-songwriter is officially married, and the Internet has gone into overdrive since he shared glimpses of the celebrations on Instagram. This isn't the first time Hasan has toyed with the idea. Earlier this year, he cheekily staged a wedding announcement as part of a music video rollout, leaving fans unsure of what to believe. But this time, it's the real deal. His caption, 'Teri chaiye ni raaye | Real hai,' settled the confusion once and for all. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hasan Raheem (@hasan_raheem) The ceremony itself was steeped in Gilgiti tradition. Hasan wore a white shalwar kameez topped with a floral-embroidered overcoat and the iconic parxin cap adorned with a peacock feather. The bride looked resplendent in a pastel blue attire with intricate detailing. A host of Pakistani celebrities, from Momina Mustehsan and Ahmed Ali Akbar to Uzair Jaswal and Osman Khalid Butt, were also spotted among the guests. Of course, fans had their own reactions. Many, initially skeptical after the earlier prank, were quick to celebrate once the photos surfaced. One comment summed it up perfectly: 'I've never seen a happier groom.' From chart-topping hits to wedding trends, Hasan seems to have mastered the art of staying in the spotlight, but always adding his unique touch to the mix.

'Skibidi' and 'tradwife' added to Cambridge dictionary

Cambridge University Press said tradwife, a portmanteau of traditional wife, reflected "a growing, controversial Instagram and TikTok trend that embraces traditional gender roles". The dictionary also took on the challenge of defining skibidi, a word popularised in online memes, as a term which had "different meanings such as cool or bad, or can be used with no real meaning". The gibberish word was spread by a YouTube channel called "Skibidi Toilet" and is associated with the mindless, "brain rot" content found on social media and consumed by Gen Alpha's overwhelmingly digital lifestyle. The dictionary defined delulu, derived from the word delusional, as "believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to". As an example, it cited a 2025 speech in parliament where Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used the phrase "delulu with no solulu". "It's not every day you get to see words like skibidi and delulu make their way into the Cambridge Dictionary," said Colin McIntosh, Lexical Programme manager at the Cambridge Dictionary. "We only add words where we think they'll have staying power. Internet culture is changing the English language and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the Dictionary." Other new phrases include "lewk", used to describe a unique fashion look and popularised by RuPaul's Drag Race, and "inspo", short for inspiration. Work from home culture has given rise to "mouse jiggler", referring to a way to pretend to work when you are not. There is also "forever chemical", man-made chemicals that stay in the environment for years and have gained traction as concerns grow about the irreversible impact of climate change on the health of humans and the plant.
