Russell Brand pleads not guilty to rape and sexual assault charges
Actor and comedian Russell Brand pleaded not guilty in a London court to rape and sexual assault charges involving four women dating back more than 25 years.
Brand, who turns 50 next week, denied two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. He said "not guilty" after each charge was read in Southwark Crown Court.
Prosecutors said the offenses took place between 1999 and 2005 - one in the English seaside town of Bournemouth and the other three in London.
Brand did not speak to reporters as he arrived at court wearing dark sunglasses, a suit jacket, a black collared shirt open below his chest and black jeans.

He is accused of raping a woman at a hotel room in Bournemouth when she attended a 1999 Labour Party conference and met him at an event where he was performing.
A second woman said Brand grabbed her forearm and attempted to drag her into a men's toilet at a television station in London in 2001.
The third accuser was a television employee who met Brand at a 2004 birthday party where he allegedly grabbed her breasts before pulling her into a toilet and forcing her to perform oral sex.
The final accuser worked at a radio station and met Brand while he was working on a spin-off of the "Big Brother" reality television program between 2004 and 2005.
British law protects the identity of victims of alleged sexual violence.

Paul Doyle, wearing a black suit, white shirt and gray tie, looked emotional and hung his head during his initial court appearance in Liverpool Magistrates' Court. Doyle, 53, is charged with dangerous driving and six serious assault charges alleging that he caused or tried to cause grievous bodily harm to the two children and four adults who suffered the worst wounds among the 79 people injured, prosecutor Philip Astbury said. 'He used his vehicle deliberately as a weapon to injure those individuals,' Astbury said. Doyle, who spoke only to confirm his name, address and birth date, did not enter a plea. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison if he is convicted. Doyle's case was transferred to Liverpool Crown Court, where a different judge scheduled an Aug. 14 hearing for him to enter pleas to the charges. His trial date was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 24 and was expected to last three to four weeks. Doyle's defense lawyer did not ask for bail and he was returned to jail. District Judge Paul Healey ordered that the victims' names not be published. The city had been celebrating Liverpool's record-tying 20th title when the Doyle allegedly turned down a street full of fans and joy quickly turned to tragedy. Police said they believed Doyle got past a road block by following an ambulance that was trying to reach a possible heart attack victim. Videos showed the car hit and toss a person wrapped in a red Liverpool flag into the air and then swerve into a sea of people packed on the side of the road. At least four people, including a child, had to be freed from beneath the vehicle when it came to a halt. The victims ranged in age from 9 to 78, police said. Seven people remained hospitalized Thursday. The suspect was believed to have acted alone and terrorism was not suspected, Merseyside Police said. They have not disclosed an alleged motive for the act.

Philadelphia police searching for stolen car, man accused of sexually assaulting, abducting child
Philadelphia police are searching for a man accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl after stealing a car in North Philadelphia Friday night. According to police, a 12-year-old girl was sleeping in the backseat of a white 2010 Ford Taurus that was left running in the area of Germantown and Erie avenues at around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Investigators said a man with a thin build, wearing all dark-colored clothing, then stole the vehicle and drove away with the 12-year-old girl inside. Philadelphia police have yet to provide a photo or name for a potential suspect as of Saturday afternoon. Police were responding to the abduction and found a child matching the 12-year-old's description at Broad Street and Roosevelt Boulevard just after 9:50 p.m. Authorities said the child was brought to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. The white Ford Taurus has yet to be recovered.
