Russell Brand pleads not guilty to rape and sexual assault charges

CBS Newsa day ago

Actor and comedian Russell Brand pleaded not guilty in a London court to rape and sexual assault charges involving four women dating back more than 25 years.
Brand, who turns 50 next week, denied two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. He said "not guilty" after each charge was read in Southwark Crown Court.
Prosecutors said the offenses took place between 1999 and 2005 - one in the English seaside town of Bournemouth and the other three in London.
Brand did not speak to reporters as he arrived at court wearing dark sunglasses, a suit jacket, a black collared shirt open below his chest and black jeans.

He is accused of raping a woman at a hotel room in Bournemouth when she attended a 1999 Labour Party conference and met him at an event where he was performing.
A second woman said Brand grabbed her forearm and attempted to drag her into a men's toilet at a television station in London in 2001.
The third accuser was a television employee who met Brand at a 2004 birthday party where he allegedly grabbed her breasts before pulling her into a toilet and forcing her to perform oral sex.
The final accuser worked at a radio station and met Brand while he was working on a spin-off of the "Big Brother" reality television program between 2004 and 2005.
British law protects the identity of victims of alleged sexual violence.

Prosecutor says suspect in Liverpool soccer parade ramming used vehicle as a weapon

Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] LONDON (AP) — The ramming suspect in Liverpool deliberately used his vehicle as a weapon when he plowed his car into a crowd of soccer fans celebrating their team's Premier League championship, a prosecutor said Friday. Paul Doyle, wearing a black suit, white shirt and gray tie, looked emotional and hung his head during his initial court appearance in Liverpool Magistrates' Court. Doyle, 53, is charged with dangerous driving and six serious assault charges alleging that he caused or tried to cause grievous bodily harm to the two children and four adults who suffered the worst wounds among the 79 people injured, prosecutor Philip Astbury said. 'He used his vehicle deliberately as a weapon to injure those individuals,' Astbury said. Doyle, who spoke only to confirm his name, address and birth date, did not enter a plea. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison if he is convicted. Doyle's case was transferred to Liverpool Crown Court, where a different judge scheduled an Aug. 14 hearing for him to enter pleas to the charges. His trial date was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 24 and was expected to last three to four weeks. Doyle's defense lawyer did not ask for bail and he was returned to jail. District Judge Paul Healey ordered that the victims' names not be published. The city had been celebrating Liverpool's record-tying 20th title when the Doyle allegedly turned down a street full of fans and joy quickly turned to tragedy. Police said they believed Doyle got past a road block by following an ambulance that was trying to reach a possible heart attack victim. Videos showed the car hit and toss a person wrapped in a red Liverpool flag into the air and then swerve into a sea of people packed on the side of the road. At least four people, including a child, had to be freed from beneath the vehicle when it came to a halt. The victims ranged in age from 9 to 78, police said. Seven people remained hospitalized Thursday. The suspect was believed to have acted alone and terrorism was not suspected, Merseyside Police said. They have not disclosed an alleged motive for the act.

Philadelphia police are searching for a man accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl after stealing a car in North Philadelphia Friday night. According to police, a 12-year-old girl was sleeping in the backseat of a white 2010 Ford Taurus that was left running in the area of Germantown and Erie avenues at around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Investigators said a man with a thin build, wearing all dark-colored clothing, then stole the vehicle and drove away with the 12-year-old girl inside. Philadelphia police have yet to provide a photo or name for a potential suspect as of Saturday afternoon. Police were responding to the abduction and found a child matching the 12-year-old's description at Broad Street and Roosevelt Boulevard just after 9:50 p.m. Authorities said the child was brought to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. The white Ford Taurus has yet to be recovered. Princess Beatrice's Husband's Ex Just Sent Telling Message About Their Relationship: ‘There's Always…'

When we think about the British Royal family and the drama that always seems to be surrounding them, we usually focus on the same people. There's a lot to focus on there, after all. King Charles is sick. Succession plans are reportedly underway. Prince William and Kate Middleton have had to contend with divorce rumors, and then reconciliation rumors, and then reports that Middleton was trying to intercede in the relationship between her husband and Prince Harry. And then there's Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who are no longer working royals and whose relationship with the rest of the family is strained at best. But there are other members of the royal family, and other issues. One of those examples comes from Prince Andrew's daughter, Princess Beatrice. Prince Andrew has remained mostly out of the public eye since reports of his close friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, but his daughters have continued with their royal duties. And people remain very interested in Prince Beatrice in particular, due to her unusual family dynamics. More from StyleCaster Princess Beatrice Was 'In Tears Every Day' After Prince Andrew's Disastrous Interview-Here's If He Still Talks To His Daughters Looks Like Beatrice & Eugenie Have Picked Sides in Harry & William's Drama Related: Did William really cheat on Kate? Beatrice married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in 2020 and has two daughters with him, Sienna and Athena. Mapelli Mozzi, however, has an older son, a nine-year-old son, Christopher Woolf 'Wolfie' Mapelli Mozzi. He shares Wolfie with ex-fiancée Dara Huang. But who is Dara Huang? And what are the family dynamics in this blended family? Huang is a successful American architect who is now based in London, where in 2013 she founded the architecture and design firm Design Haus Liberty. Huang is also the co-founder of a furniture and interiors brand with J. Christopher Burch, called Dara Maison. By all reports, Huang, Mapelli Mozz,i and Princess Beatrice get along very well, and have successfully co-parented Wolfie for the last few years without any issues. Speaking to Harper's Bazaar UK, Huang said about co-parenting, 'Wolfie has had two sets of parents trying to help him on both sides, and I just think, 'The more, the merrier,'' adding, 'I feel lucky to have such positive people around him, who really embrace him, because it didn't have to be so easy.' For Huang, your kids should come first. 'It's all about your point of view. I don't understand people who are divorced and then hold their children as collateral; that doesn't make any sense. It's about creating a happy home and lifestyle.' The single mom recently spoke about just that, being a single mom, in an Instagram post alongside a friend, Bella Koenig, who got married in Tuscany. 'Single moms rock! Here's one for all the single moms out there,' she said, adding, 'There's always going to be a wonderful man who will love your baby as much as you do and will take responsibility for all of your lives together as a blended family. Proof to never give up on love!' Princess Beatrice, meanwhile, has referred to herself as a 'bonus mum' to Wolfie and spoken about how it's a 'great honour' to be in his life. Huang just split from Spanish investor Filippos Kodellas de la Morena. She previously dated Mapelli Mozzi from 2015 to 2018. Their son, Christopher 'Wolfie' Mapelli Mozzi, was born in 2016. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Princess Beatrice married in 2020. The two had known each other since childhood, as his family is close friends with her parents, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah, Duchess of York.
