July core growth slows to 2% as energy loses steam
Synopsis India's core sector output experienced a modest 2% growth in July, slightly below June's 2.2%, primarily due to contractions in coal, crude oil, natural gas, and refinery products. Steel and cement production surged, driven by government capital expenditure and a robust housing sector. Looking ahead, expectations are for core sector growth to rise to 5% in August. ANI Representational image India's core sector output grew 2% year-on-year in July, a tad lower than 2.2% in June, due to contraction in energy segments, official data released Wednesday growth was 6.3% in July 2024. "The core sector output remained muted as the growth performance of the mining-related sectors and electricity continued to remain weak, partly on account of the healthy monsoon turnout," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA. "The muted growth was driven by contraction in output of coal, crude oil, natural gas, and refinery products, which kept the infrastructure output growth at tepid levels," said Paras Jasrai, associate director at India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra). Among these, coal output saw the steepest fall of 12.3% year-on-year, due to the base effect. "As the shift in production matrix for power shifts to renewables where support is provided by PLI (production-linked incentive scheme), this trend of lesser demand for coal should continue," said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda. Natural gas output declined by 3.2%, followed by crude oil (1.3%), and refinery products (1%).Sabnavis pointed out that apart from subdued demand, the stability of global crude oil prices between $60 and $70 per barrel also influenced production levels. This, he said, reflects a broader slowdown in the consumption of petroleum products like petrol and diesel, which may be partially explained by the growing popularity of electric vehicles, particularly in the passenger car growth in other segments helped prevent a sharp decline in the overall in four of the eight core sectors expanded, led by a surge in steel production, which rose by 12.8%, highest in 21 output followed closely, growing by 11.7%, its strongest performance in four to Jasrai, this reflects the impact of steady government added that the housing sector, buoyed by declining interest rates, also played a key role in supporting cement he cautioned that we still need to see major pick-up in private investment in the infra space as it is the government which has been dominating the and electricity recorded a growth of 2% and 0.5%, respectively, in ahead, Ind-Ra expects core sector growth to rise to 5% year-on-year in August, citing an increase in daily power generation (as of August 19) and a favourable base eight core industries account for 40.27% weight in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).Industrial output fell to a 10-month low of 1.5% year-on-year in June from 1.9% in May, according to official data released last month. Estimates for July will be released on August 28.

PM to launch projects worth Rs 13,000 crore tomorrow
Patna/Gaya: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation for projects worth Rs 13,000 crore in Bihar during his Gaya visit on Friday. The visit is significant not only for the slew of infrastructure, health, power and urban development projects lined up for opening but also for its political importance, as the Magadh region—where the PM will hold his public rally—has remained a weak spot for the NDA in recent elections. The projects which PM Modi will launch from Gaya belong to roads, power, health, urban development and water supply. Modi will also flag off Amrit Bharat Express between Gaya and Delhi and the Buddhist circuit train between Vaishali and Koderma. After addressing a public meeting at Gaya around 11am, PM Modi will visit Simaria to inaugurate the 8.15-km-long Aunta-Simaria bridge project on NH-31, which includes the 1.86-km-long six-lane bridge on the Ganga river, constructed at a cost of over Rs 1,870 crore. It will provide direct connectivity between Mokama in Patna and Begusarai. NHAI regional officer M L Yoetkar said they had to face immense challenges during the bridge's construction. "This is a low-lying area, prone to annual floods. Construction work is possible only during seven-eight months every year. It is the country's widest extra-dosed bridge designed with a single segmental structure having a 34-metre-wide deck over the Ganga. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo With span lengths ranging from 57 m to 115 m and 70 m cantilever arms, the structure exemplifies engineering excellence," he said. RCD minister Nitin Nabin on Wednesday visited the bridge parallel to the two-lane rail-cum-road bridge, Rajendra Setu. He reviewed the preparations for the inaugural function at Simaria where PM Modi will also see the Simaria ghat before flying to Kolkata to inaugurate the new metro train services the same day. "This is the widest bridge in Asia with a width of 34 meters. It is based on 18 pillars and has three-lane roads on both sides. A 100-metre wide rotary (Zero Mile) towards Aunta and an 80-metre-wide rotary towards Simaria have been built and given the shape of a park. Plantation has been done around these parks and bridges for greenery," Nitin said. Simaria Ghat was redeveloped by the Nitish Kumar govt recently. The new bridge will reduce the extra travel distance of more than 100 km for the heavy vehicles plying between north Bihar (Begusarai, Supaul, Madhubani, Purnia, Araria) and south Bihar (Sheikhpura, Nawada, Lakhisarai). PM Modi will also inaugurate the four-lane Bakhtiyarpur-Mokama section of NH-31 built with around Rs 1,900 crore. Modi will also inaugurate Buxar Thermal Power Plant (660x1 MW) built at the cost of Rs 6,880 crore. The plant will meet the growing electricity demand of the region. In order to boost health infrastructure, PM Modi will inaugurate the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre at Muzaffarpur. The centre has advanced oncology OPD, IPD wards, operation theatres, modern lab, blood bank and a 24-bed ICU and HDU. As part of his Swachh Bharat Mission and ensuring unhindered flow of the Ganga river, PM Modi will inaugurate the sewerage treatment plant (STP) and sewerage network at Munger worth over Rs 520 crore and constructed under the Namami Gange project to reduce pollution load in the Ganga and improve sanitation facilities in the region. The PM will also lay the foundation stone for a series of urban infrastructure projects worth around Rs 1,260 crore. These include the STP and sewerage network at Daudnagar in Aurangabad and Jehanabad; STP and interception and diversion work at Barahiya in Lakhisarai and Jamui districts. Under AMRUT 2.0 programme, he will lay the foundation stone for water supply projects at Aurangabad, Bodh Gaya and Jehanabad. The PM will also symbolically hand over the keys to 12,000 rural beneficiaries under PMAY-Gramin and 4,260 beneficiaries under PMAY-Urban at the 'Grih Pravesh' ceremony. PM's visit to Gaya is politically crucial for the NDA as the alliance underperformed in the region both in the 2020 assembly elections and the 2024 parliamentary polls. The area, having 26 assembly and four Lok Sabha seats, is politically important and it is expected that his visit would boost the morale of NDA workers. In 2020, JD(U) could not win even one of the 26 seats in the five districts of the Magadh division. However, the performance of HAM(S) was much better in the Magadh division in 2020, as it won three of the 10 seats it contested. The good performance partially reduced the impact of embarrassment caused by HAM(S) founder Jitan Ram Manjhi's shock defeat in the Makhdumpur assembly segment of Jehanabad district. However, Manjhi, who contested two seats, won from Imamganj. NDA leaders, including Lav Singh, a prominent JD(U) leader of the Magadh division, and BJP leader Akhauri Niranjan, are hopeful that the performance of the NDA would be much better compared to 2020. The NDA leadership of the Magadh division is hopeful of repeating the 2010 assembly election performance when the alliance virtually swept the assembly polls in the area. During his visit, PM Modi will lay foundations and inaugurate several development projects, giving the NDA an opportunity to project both governance and intent ahead of the upcoming poll battles. Leaders of the alliance in Magadh believe that the PM's presence will not only energise the cadre, but also help the NDA reclaim its lost ground in a region once considered its stronghold.
