Crackdown ordered against hoarders ahead of Ramazan
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Food Zahir Shah Toru has ordered strict legal action against those involved in hoarding and artificially inflating the prices of essential food items during the holy month of Ramazan.
He said that no leniency would be shown in this regard.
Toru made these remarks while presiding over a review meeting on the strategy to maintain price stability and curb artificial inflation and hoarding during the holy month.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Food Saqib Raza Aslam and senior food department officials.
During the meeting, secretary food briefed the minister about measures being implemented across the province. He informed him that special teams have been formed to tackle artificial inflation and hoarding effectively.
"The teams will operate at the divisional level under the supervision of Deputy Directors of Food and District Food Controllers in their respective areas," he said.
The secretary further stated that the teams would not only hold meetings with businesses dealing in flour, sugar, and other essential commodities but would also conduct inspections and raids to ensure price stability and curb hoarding.
The minister directed the officials to take all possible steps to provide relief to the public in Ramazan. He reiterated that those exploiting citizens through artificial price hikes and hoarding would face strict legal consequences.
"The provincial government is committed to facilitating the common man. No one will be allowed to loot the public by creating an artificial food crisis," he said.
The meeting concluded with instructions to relevant officials to closely monitor market prices and the availability of essential commodities throughout Ramazan and to take immediate action against any violation.

Commissioners, DCs directed to ensure ex-mill price of sugar
KARACHI: Chief Secretary Sindh, Asif Hyder Shah has issued strict instructions to all Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to ensure that the ex-mill price of sugar remains capped at Rs 165 per kilogram. Chairing a meeting to review key issues related to sugar and wheat prices, distribution of Sanads to flood-affected families under the Sindh People's Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF) program, and monsoon preparedness, he further directed that retail prices must not exceed an additional Rs. 8 above the ex-mill price, meaning the maximum retail price should be Rs. 173 per kilogram. He emphasized that any violation of this pricing structure must be dealt with strictly. If retailers are found charging beyond the fixed price, immediate action must be taken against them. Moreover, if any sugar mill is found selling sugar above the notified ex-mill rate, its data will be compiled and shared with the Prime Minister's Office for further action. The meeting also received a detailed briefing on the current ex-mill and retail prices of sugar across various districts of the province. The meeting was attended in person by the Secretary Agriculture, Secretary Food, Secretary Implementation & Coordination (I&C), and Secretary Land Utilization. All Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners across Sindh participated in the meeting via video link. Regarding wheat stock management, the Chief Secretary instructed all Commissioners to conduct a thorough survey of wheat godowns managed by the Sindh Food Department. The survey must focus on the quality and condition of stored wheat. The Commissioners have been directed to submit their inspection reports within three days. Distribution of Sanads to Flood Affectees The Chief Secretary also reviewed the status of Sanads (ownership documents) prepared for distribution among the flood-affected populations under the Sindh People's Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF) initiative. He directed all Deputy Commissioners to submit updated records of prepared Sanads without delay. Additionally, the CEO of SPHF was instructed to reconcile Sanad data with the respective DCs to ensure transparency and accuracy in the distribution process. Monsoon Preparedness Highlighting the upcoming monsoon season, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah instructed all Deputy Commissioners to remain fully prepared for any eventualities. He assured that funds will be released to each district administration to support necessary preparations and emergency response mechanisms ahead of the monsoon rains. The Chief Secretary concluded the meeting by emphasizing coordinated efforts, timely action, and transparent governance at all administrative levels to ensure public welfare and effective service delivery across Sindh. Nawaz leaves for London on special plane
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday left for London on a special plane. According to family sources, the PML-N president will celebrate Eidul Azha with his sons in the United Kingdom during the two-week visit and will also get his medical examination conducted during the stay. Nawaz is visiting London after seven months. The former PM was scheduled to spend his Ramazan in Saudi Arabia but had cancelled the trip on his doctors' advice. The PML-N chief remained in London from October 2019 to October 2023 in what could be described as a self-imposed exile. Upon his return to the country after formation of a PML-N led coalition government Nawaz was acquitted of the charges of corruption.

SAPM assures PVMA of prompt dues clearance
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA) raised the challenges facing the ghee manufacturing sector including outstanding dues in a high-level meeting. The high-level meeting was held on Friday between Prime Minister's Special Assistant, Haroon Akhtar Khan and the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA). Present at the meeting were PVMA Chairman Sheikh Umar Rehan, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Production Saif Anjum, and representatives of the ghee industry. The discussions focused in detail on the challenges facing the ghee manufacturing sector. Haroon Akhtar Khan acknowledged the concerns raised by the industry and assured them of the government's support. 'We fully recognise the issues being faced by the ghee sector and are committed to not putting the industry under any additional pressure,' said Haroon Akhtar Khan.
