Rafizi backs plans to develop Ambalat with Indonesia

PETALING JAYA: Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli says he supports Malaysia's plans to work with Indonesia to develop the disputed Ambalat area off the east coast of Borneo, amid claims by Perikatan Nasional that such joint ventures could jeopardise the nation's sovereignty. In a statement on X, Rafizi highlighted the importance of such joint development plans to the country's coffers. He said the Ambalat block contains significant oil and gas reserves, which is especially crucial considering Petronas's declining output. The Pandan MP said similar exploration efforts between Malaysia and Thailand in areas over which they had overlapping maritime claims had paid off handsomely as these projects now produce nearly one-third of Peninsular Malaysia's gas supply. 'Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto have, in principle, agreed to explore joint development between Malaysia and Indonesia to unlock the oil potential in Ambalat. 'I agree and support this. In fact, this was one of the matters I brought up when I was in the Cabinet. 'The federal government must engage in simultaneous discussions with both the Indonesian government and the Sabah government to ensure the state's interests are protected and that a fair share of the profits goes to the people there. 'But if this becomes a political football and the joint development plan stalls, the country and the people, from Sabah to Perlis, will continue to lose billions of ringgit in revenue every year at a time when our oil revenues are already in decline.' Malaysia and Indonesia have had overlapping claims over the waters of the Sulawesi Sea known as the Ambalat block – located between East Kalimantan, Indonesia, and southeast Sabah – since Malaysia published a map in 1979 showing the maritime border area within Malaysian waters. Anwar and Prabowo announced plans last week to jointly develop the Ambalat block in the Sulawesi Sea while continuing legal and diplomatic discussions on maritime sovereignty over the 15,000 sq km area. Yesterday, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin, who served as home minister under former prime ministers Muhyiddin Yassin and Ismail Sabri Yaakob, claimed that a joint development agreement with a foreign country claiming maritime sovereignty over the area to be developed could jeopardise Malaysia's national interests. Muhyiddin, meanwhile, said developing the Ambalat block without a clear ruling on maritime borders by the International Court of Justice or other recognised legal bodies could set a dangerous precedent and this might be used in future to undermine Malaysia's claims over this and other disputed areas. In his post on X, Rafizi said that while PN had the right to oppose such plans, such objections should only be raised after examining the full merits of the case. He said Umno's focus now must be to serve the people and to champion the interests of race and religion. 'The party must always come first. If we win, we win as one. If we lose, we all go down together as well. 'There will definitely be those who will abandon the party when we lose. So, my only hope is that members will remain loyal to the party,' he said.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Suspended or sacked Umno leaders must set aside their egos if they truly care about the party, says Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh. Akmal said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has already indicated his willingness to consider appeals from those who were subjected to disciplinary action, Berita Harian reported. 'The party is for everyone, and we must come together again. We need them (those who were suspended or sacked) to help strengthen the party. 'But there's one condition – everyone must put their ego aside. God willing, Umno will become stronger,' he was quoted as saying after officiating the Seremban Umno Youth annual general meeting last night. He was commenting on a motion by Sembrong Umno calling for suspended former division chief Hishammuddin Hussein to be welcomed back to the party However, the Sembrong MP and former party vice-president has hinted that he would not appeal his suspension, saying that he had not been officially told what he had done wrong, and appealing was not a measure of loyalty. Akmal said he was also open to facilitating the return of not only Hishammuddin but also other former leaders like Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan. 'Those who were disciplined had contributed in ways we cannot forget. That's why I say unity in Umno is crucial, and that unity cannot come from just one side,' he said.

Umno faction trying to smear, overthrow Zahid, says insider
Political analyst Azmi Hassan said there is nothing to suggest Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan wants to challenge party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and believes they enjoy a good relationship. PETALING JAYA : A senior Umno leader has alleged that recent efforts to sow discord between party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, are part of a deliberate campaign to wrest control of the party. Speaking to FMT on condition of anonymity, the Umno Supreme Council member said a group within the party was working to paint Zahid as weak and unfit to remain as president. 'This group is trying to split the party so they can later contest the posts of president and deputy president. 'Their aim is to build the narrative that Zahid is ineffective and unsuitable to lead the party,' the leader said. At the Ledang Umno division meeting last Sunday, Mohamad said certain quarters were trying to pit him against Zahid with the aim of weakening the party's leadership. 'Some people are trying to drive a wedge between the Umno president and me. I just smile because these people cannot be trusted, especially since they've also spoken badly about the president. 'I don't even know what they might be saying behind my back,' he was reported to have said. Azmi said the aim was to create the impression of internal conflict to weaken Zahid, even though he believes Zahid and Mohamad enjoy a good relationship. 'There is no indication that Mohamad wants to challenge Zahid, or vice versa. The rumours are not meant to tarnish Mohamad's image, but rather to portray Zahid as someone who has lost control of the party. 'This is either the work of those in Umno who don't like Zahid or political enemies from outside the party,' he said, adding that he believes it to be the latter.
