Clash in Palakkad Municipality meet, Chairperson says assaulted by Left-Cong councillors
The Palakkad Municipality has been governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2015.
This issue had been simmering since the foundation stone was laid on April 11.
Since then, time and again, there have been skirmishes between the ruling BJP and the opposition councillors.
But on Tuesday, when the council meeting started, the entire opposition councillors held placards, saying 'Who is this Hedgewar?'.
The chairperson, Pramila Sashidharan, however, said there would be no change in the name. She said the name has already been given to the skill centre being built using Rs 1.5 crore fund from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund of a private company.
The opposition rose in protest, and it was a free-for-all between the combined opposition councillors and the ruling BJP members.
Very soon, the police also came in, and so did others whom the opposition members allege were the "goons of the BJP/RSS who were sitting in the visitors' gallery".
Later, Sashidharan was moved to her room, and here too, the two sides indulged in skirmishes.
'My hair was pulled by the opposition councillors... my arms were held...they hurt me physically... I am just waiting to go to the hospital to get the treatment, but I am unable to move out,' said Sashidharan, who was surrounded and heckled by the protesters.
Incidentally, the Congress councillors have the full backing of the newly elected Palakkad MLA and state Youth Congress President Rahul Mamkootathil.
He has said earlier, 'To our knowledge, Hedgewar is someone who tried to divide the nation; he is the founder of RSS. When you build a building on land owned by the municipality of Palakkad and not by any political groups, why would it be named after an RSS leader?'
However, senior BJP leader and councillor Sivarajan made it very clear that the decision will not be reversed and the name will stay.
'We will not change the name at all,' said Sivarajan.
Incidentally, the centre is coming up on 30 cents of land owned by Palakkad Municipality.

Probe Agency Restitutes Rs 380-Crore Assets In Bank 'Fraud' Involving Ex-MLA
New Delhi: Attached assets worth Rs 380 crore have been restored to a designated Maharashtra government authority for distribution to the about 5 lakh "duped" depositors of a cooperative bank, controlled by a former MLA, as part of a money laundering proceeding, the Enforcement Directorate said on Wednesday. The case pertains to the Karnala Nagari Sahakari Bank Ltd. in Panvel where it was alleged that its erstwhile chairman, Vivekanand Shankar Patil, in connivance with other officials of the bank, "cheated" the lender and "siphoned off" the funds for private investments. Patil, a four-time MLA of the Shetkari Kamgar Paksha Party, was arrested by the ED in June 2021. The money laundering case of the ED stems from a February 2020 FIR filed by the Pune Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The police alleged in its chargesheet that the then chairman Patil and other officials of the bank prepared 63 "bogus" loan accounts using "forged" documents without following the RBI guidelines and standard banking norms, and "siphoned off" Rs 560 crore for personal gains, the federal probe agency said in a statement. The ED said its probe found that funds were "diverted" to various entities "controlled" by Patil and his relatives. "He (Patil) purchased various properties and assets using the funds siphoned off from the bank and these proceeds of crime were utilised for the purchase of immovable properties at different locations in Raigad district of Maharashtra," it said. These assets, worth Rs 386 crore, were attached by the ED under two provisional orders issued in 2021 and 2023. The ED also filed a chargesheet in August 2021 before a special PMLA court in Mumbai. The ED said the liquidator appointed by the RBI for the bank filed an application, under section 8(8) of the PMLA, before the court seeking restitution of assets. The ED gave its consent, the agency said. The court issued an order on July 22 directing the release of the property -- Karnala Sports Academy at Panvel -- to the liquidator and to put it up for auction, the ED said. The court also ordered the Competent Authority (Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors) to "realise" the land at Posari, Raigad by auction for distribution amongst the depositors. "The bank had more than 5 lakh depositors having total deposits of Rs 553 crore, and they lost their hard-earned money. "In the larger interest of depositors and currently ongoing restitution efforts, ED took steps to expedite the process resulting in the restitution," the agency said. The PMLA provides for the process of restitution even before completion of the court trial in order to provide succour to the victims of frauds like bank loans and Ponzi scheme cheating. The fraud came to light after an audit was done at the instance of the Reserve Bank of India during 2019-20, when it was found that Patil was siphoning off funds from the bank through 67 "fictitious" loan accounts. The funds were sent to the loan accounts of entities/firms/trusts owned or controlled by Patil including Karnala Charitable Trust, Karnala Sports Academy and Karnala Mahila Readymade Garments Cooperative Society Limited, the agency had claimed in a statement issued in October 2023.

Maharashtra Government To Cancel Fake Birth Certificates Of Bangladeshi Migrants
Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will cancel the fake birth certificates issued to Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the state by August 15, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on Wednesday. As many as 42,000 such cases have been found but the actual number is greater, and it will be ascertained by the officials, he told reporters here. "By August 15, fake birth certificates given to Bangladeshis will be cancelled," the BJP leader said, adding that the copies of such certificates will have to be sent to the Department of Revenue and the Department of Health. Earlier, BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya had alleged that 3,997 birth certificates had been issued to Bangladeshis on the basis of forged documents, leading to the state government suspending two officials previously posted in Malegaon in Nashik district. On Tuesday, Bawankule held a meeting with the state chief secretary, which was attended by district collectors via video conference. Somaiya too attended the meeting, sources said. Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam had stated in March that in the last four years, the government has been cracking down on illegal Bangladeshi residents as never before. In 2021, 109 Bangladeshis residing illegally in the state were deported, followed by 77 in 2022 and 127 in 2023. In 2024, as many as 716 illegal Bangladeshi residents were arrested and 202 deported, he stated.

Terrorism handled with iron fist under Modi Govt: Shah in RS
New Delhi, July 30 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah today launched a scathing attack on the Congress party during a fiery address in the Rajya Sabha, asserting that the terrorists behind several high-profile attacks during the UPA era had been eliminated under the Modi government's recent counter-terror operations—Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev. In a sharp political offensive during participation in debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah accused the Congress, particularly former Home Minister P. Chidambaram, of shielding Pakistan-backed narratives for the sake of "vote-bank politics". He alleged that the UPA government was reluctant to take strong action against terrorists and instead relied on diplomatic paperwork. 'Under Operation Sindoor, many key terrorists like Hafiz Muhammad, Mudassar, Mohamad Hamza, Mohammed Hazar, Abdul Malik and others have either been killed or incapacitated,' Shah told the Upper House, adding that several of them were so severely injured 'they won't be able to commit another terror attack in the future.' Hitting out at Chidambaram for questioning the nationality of the slain militants, Shah retorted: 'Why does Chidambaram need proof? Who is he trying to save—Pakistan or Lashkar?' He went on to accuse the Congress of "placing national security second to appeasement politics." Referring to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Home Minister disclosed that the three Lashkar-e-Taiba commanders involved—identified as Suleimani, Afghan, and Jibran—were neutralised in Operation Mahadev conducted on Monday. He cited forensic evidence and eyewitness testimonies linking the trio to the attack, and attributed the plot to Lashkar's proxy outfit, The Resistance Front (TRF). 'Unlike the past, we did not wait. I reached Srinagar the same day,' Shah recalled. 'Congress kept sending dossiers, but under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, we gave a direct response. Only fear ensures peace with terrorists.' In an apparent swipe at Chidambaram, Shah questioned the Congress' credibility on national security. 'He says Operation Sindoor wasn't decisive. Was 1965 or 1971 decisive then? Why did terrorism rise so drastically under Congress?' he asked, pointing to what he termed a history of inaction and weak responses under previous governments. The Opposition, led by the Congress and other INDIA bloc constituents, staged a walkout during Shah's reply, demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's presence in the House to answer questions related to Operation Sindoor.
