Why the End of Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's Netflix Deal Isn't the Bombshell You Think It Is
The story about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's $100 million Netflix deal was bound to have the U.K. tabloids salivating — they've been waiting for this day. But beneath the negativity is a reality that many in Hollywood are facing, and it's not a Sussex issue. On July 23, The Sun kicked off the news that the royal duo's deal would end permanently in September. 'The deal is done; no more shows will be made,' an insider told the publication. 'Netflix feels they've got all they can from the couple.' The source noted that while the Harry & Meghan docuseries was a big success, 'the content got weaker from there.' More from SheKnows Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Promised Fans a Netflix Romantic Drama - So Where Is It? The streamer's July 17 Engagement Report showed that Prince Harry's Polo docuseries was a bomb while his wife's lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, found middle ground with viewers. Still, Netflix is in business with the Duchess of Sussex for her As Ever brand products, which still makes her valuable to the network. While the British media wants to make the deal termination all about Meghan and Harry, the truth is more about the finances of Hollywood in 2025. Netflix is no longer entering into massive, big-budget production deals with stars. As People pointed out, Barack and Michelle Obama found their massive contract morph into a standard first-look agreement. The Sun insider also noted the duo's current relationship with the streamer, 'There's no animosity from either side. Things have just run their course.' Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has been a big cheerleader for the Sussexes, and it is likely that their relationship will continue on a smaller basis. Still, the second season of With Love, Meghan will likely need to show some ratings improvements in order to nab a third season pickup. Sarandos explained what Netflix is looking for from all of their series at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City in September 2024 — he's a big fan of transparency. 'Put the number out there so that talent can see it, so that agents can see it, so that the press can see it, and know what's a hit and what's a miss,' he said, per Deadline. So, don't be misled by Prince Harry and Meghan headlines; their deal is the result of the economic downsizing of Hollywood. It makes more sense for Netflix to do a one-off deal with them instead of an oversized Hollywood contract. Why Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's New Netflix Deal Is Being Described as a ‘Downgrade'
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are officially continuing their relationship with Netflix, but it has a new name. Long gone is the $100 million deal they nabbed in 2020; in comes a fresh term: 'creative partnership.' The Hollywood Reporter described the multiyear, first-look deal as a 'downgrade,' but it is the same contract they gave Barack and Michelle Obama after their initial production deal ran out. The one notable aspect of the new partnership is that neither power couple is exclusively tied to Netflix — they can take their work elsewhere if the streamer passes. More from SheKnows Meghan Markle's Minimalist Royal Style Has a New Fan - And It's Not Kate Middleton Meghan is also staying in business with the streaming network for her As Ever brand. 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand,' Markle said in a statement to the media outlet. 'My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally and celebrates our shared vision.' The Aug. 11 announcement was not surprising, and SheKnows even predicted that it would work out this way for the Sussexes in July. The British tabloids will try to spin this as a failure, when in reality, Hollywood is tightening up their budgets due to the rough economy, and Netflix isn't doing massive production deals anymore. Netflix sounds happy to be in business with Meghan and Harry, describing them as 'influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere,' in a statement. The Sussexes even have a list of projects to come with the network, including Season 2 of With Love, Meghan, their romantic feature film, Meet Me at the Lake, and a short documentary, Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within. The news about Harry and Meghan aligns with what Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has been saying all along because he is one of their biggest cheerleaders in Hollywood. 'We're a passive partner in Meghan's company, and it's a big discovery model for us right now,' Sarandos told Variety in March. 'I think Meghan is underestimated in terms of her influence on culture. When we dropped the trailer for the Harry & Meghan doc series [in 2022], everything on-screen was dissected in the press for days.' He continued, 'The shoes she was wearing sold out all over the world. The Hermès blanket that was on the chair behind her sold out everywhere in the world. People are fascinated with Meghan Markle. She and Harry are overly dismissed.' Harry and Meghan are still in business, so every critic who predicted their demise might need to find a new narrative. Royal Experts Say Prince Louis Inherited His Cheeky Sense of Humor From 1 Relative (& It's Neither of His Parents)
It's no secret that the star of so many royal family events is Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Prince William's youngest son, Prince Louis. His hilarious faces and adorable antics always pepper the headlines, and experts have been pondering something since then: Where did he get this sense of humor from? Well, experts think he got his humor from an unexpected member of the British royal family. Several royal experts told the DailyMail that they believe Louis got his humor from his uncle Prince Harry, with the outlet even saying, 'When it comes to brotherly banter, it seems Prince Louis is following in the footsteps of his uncle, Prince Harry.' More from SheKnows Why Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's New Netflix Deal Is Being Described as a 'Downgrade' Now, this isn't the first time Louis has been compared to Harry, especially when it comes to his facial expressions and 'wild child' persona (which Harper's Bazaar broke down the similarities for!) For those who don't know, William and Kate have been together on and off since 2003. Since their nuptials in 2011, they have welcomed three children named Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Louis, 7. Along with Louis, even Charlotte has been compared to Harry. Back in 2023, royal expert Jennie Bond asserts, per Woman and Home, that Charlotte might not want to be 'burdened' with more titles (which many noted is a lot like Harry.) Bond said, 'I think we will be in a very modern era when the time comes. I question whether Charlotte will want to be burdened with more titles. She might be a working woman by then. Things could change so much in the next generation.'Best of SheKnows Birthday Freebies for Kids: 25+ Places That'll Make Their Big Day Extra Sweet These Raw & Beautiful Breastfeeding Photos Show There's No 'Right' Way to Nurse 'But I Hate School': What To Do When Your Teen Dreads Going Back Solve the daily Crossword
