Punjab to develop wide ranging sports infrastructure
Baseball Sports Complex will be constructed in Lahore, while Paddle Tennis Courts will be developed in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Sialkot. Volleyball Courts and Indoor Sports Complexes will also be established. Sports stadiums in Jampur and Rajanpur will be rehabilitated and sports complexes in Chichawatni and Dera Ghazi Khan will also be constructed. The Bahawalpur Stadium will also be upgraded.
Punjab Minister for Sports, Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar held a meeting, here Monday in which decisions regarding the Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2025-26 and other key projects were taken.
Addressing the meeting, the minister emphasized that new hockey turfs will be laid in Sahiwal and various other cities.
He reiterated that the vision of the Chief Minister Punjab is to promote sports across the province, and that the Sports Department is working tirelessly to fulfil this goal. He added that a wide-ranging sports infrastructure is being developed to ensure the overall progress of sports in Punjab.

Asif dominated both frames, securing a 79-15 win in the first and following it up with an 89-31 victory in the second, thanks to a powerful break of 51 points. The World Games, taking place in Chengdu, China, have brought together over 4,000 athletes from across the globe, competing in 34 disciplines. Snooker, which has been part of the Games since 2001, continues to provide a platform for top cueists to showcase their talent, with 12 players vying for the coveted gold medal this year. Asif, a seasoned campaigner and former IBSF World champion, had earned his place at the World Games after a stellar performance in the IBSF World Men's Snooker Championship last year in Doha. His success continued with a victory in the IBSF World Masters Snooker Championship in Bahrain last month, where he triumphed 4-3 over India's Brijesh Damani to secure his sixth world title. Asif will now look to finish strong in the bronze medal match, aiming to add to Pakistan's medal history in the sport.

Donkey cart race marks freedom, resilience

PHOTO: PPI In a unique celebration of Pakistan's Independence Day and Maarka-e-Haq, the Sindh Government's Sports Department organised a donkey cart race from Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim, Clifton to Frere Hall. The event drew enthusiastic participation, with over 50 donkey carts competing in the spirited race. Nadeem clinched first place, followed by Rizwan in second and Khalid Ismail in third. The winners received cash prizes of Rs75,000, Rs50,000, and Rs25,000 respectively, along with trophies to honour their achievement. Besides the top three, everyone was a winner. All participants were also awarded cash prizes and commemorative trophies, adding to the festive atmosphere. The closing ceremony was held at Frere Hall, where Parliamentary Secretary Saima Agha served as the chief guest and distributed the prizes. Additional Secretary for Sports, Asad Ishaq, along with other officials, also attended the event. The donkey cart race, blending tradition with celebration, attracted attention from locals and passersby, turning the streets into a lively track of cheers and excitement.

POA reviews plans for upcoming events
The Emergent General Council of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) convened on 9 August 2025 to review key developments in Pakistan's sporting landscape, including preparations for the First National Youth Games, 35th National Games 2025, the 14th South Asian Games 2026 — Pakistan, 3rd Asian Youth Games Bahrain 2025, 6th Islamic Solidarity Games, Riyadh 2025 and matters relating to the governance of sport in the country. The Council received a comprehensive briefing on the concept, programme, and arrangements for the First National Youth Games of Pakistan. It was emphasised that the Youth Games are not merely a multi-sport event for young athletes, but part of a broader, tiered programme that will reach the grassroots level to identify, develop, and polish national sporting talent. The initiative aims to provide the youth of Pakistan with a platform to showcase their abilities and progress towards international representation and medal success. The house lauded the POA President for delivering this national initiative and for establishing the National Youth Games Council (NYGC), chaired by Mr. Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan. A distinctive feature of the NYGC is the inclusion of prominent corporate sector representatives, enabling direct engagement between business leaders and national youth and sports development programmes. The Council also noted with appreciation the keen interest of the Prime Minister Youth Programme (PMYP) and the constructive meetings held with PMYP, the Ministry of IPC, and the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) to ensure the successful delivery of the Games. The house was informed that the National Games 2025 will be held from 6-13 December 2025 in Karachi. The Hon. Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh, met on 08 May 2025 with the POA delegation headed by President POA Mr. Arif Saeed, and assured that the Sindh Government will provide the best possible arrangements for the Games. The house also noted progress on preparations for hosting the South Asian Games in Pakistan and participation in the 3rd Asian Youth Games, Bahrain 2025, 6th Islamic Solidarity Games, Riyadh 2025 with ongoing coordination meetings and operational activities continuing to ensure readiness. In its deliberations on governance matters, the Council reiterated the imperative of aligning national sports governance with the Olympic Charter and the statutes of International Federations (IFs), noting that relevant advisories from the IOC and OCA, duly shared with the PSB, remain unimplemented. It observed that certain PSB measures, if enforced in their present form, would place the NOC and NSFs in direct conflict with their binding obligations under the Olympic Charter and IF statutes.
