Punjab to develop wide ranging sports infrastructure

LAHORE: As many as 175 new schemes for sports department will be launched under the ADP 2025-26. Under the schemes, the Nishtar Park Sports Complex will undergo major up-gradation, while new facilities including an Archery Sports Complex, Table Tennis Arena, and Board Games Sports Complex will be constructed. The Velodrome will be fully restored and spectator capacity at Punjab Stadium will also be increased.
Baseball Sports Complex will be constructed in Lahore, while Paddle Tennis Courts will be developed in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Sialkot. Volleyball Courts and Indoor Sports Complexes will also be established. Sports stadiums in Jampur and Rajanpur will be rehabilitated and sports complexes in Chichawatni and Dera Ghazi Khan will also be constructed. The Bahawalpur Stadium will also be upgraded.
Punjab Minister for Sports, Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar held a meeting, here Monday in which decisions regarding the Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2025-26 and other key projects were taken.
Addressing the meeting, the minister emphasized that new hockey turfs will be laid in Sahiwal and various other cities.
He reiterated that the vision of the Chief Minister Punjab is to promote sports across the province, and that the Sports Department is working tirelessly to fulfil this goal. He added that a wide-ranging sports infrastructure is being developed to ensure the overall progress of sports in Punjab.

Pakistan to host South Asian Games in 2026 with 27 sports across Lahore venues

Pakistan will host the 14th South Asian Games in January 2026, following a meeting of the Inter-Provincial Coordination Committee (IPC) on June 2. The Punjab government has agreed to organise the multi-sport event, which will feature athletes competing across 27 disciplines. Lahore will host a wide range of sports including archery, badminton, basketball, boxing, fencing, football, golf, hockey, judo, kabaddi, karate, rugby, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, weightlifting, wrestling, and cricket, according to the Pakistan Sports Board. During the session, the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) presented its recommendations to the Ministry of IPC. A high-level committee, supervised by the IPC Secretary and comprising representatives from all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, was formed to review these proposals. The committee is tasked with submitting a detailed report within two weeks, covering budgeting, security arrangements, and venue selection for the Games. Officials stressed the government's commitment to mobilise all necessary resources to ensure the event meets international standards. Discussions also addressed potential organisational challenges and strategies to mitigate any disruptions. Hosting the South Asian Games is expected to enhance Pakistan's global image by showcasing its ability to stage major international sporting events. The Punjab government and Islamabad administration are preparing to provide world-class facilities and hospitality to athletes and officials.

LAHORE: MIT Solutions and Sahir Associates will go head to head in the final of the President's Trophy Grade-II at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium from 29th May to 1st June as the 2024-25 domestic season comes to an end. The winner of the tournament will also qualify for the departmental first-class tournament - President's Trophy Grade-I 2025-26. The two teams have played eight three-day matches each and will get a chance to bag Rs five million if they win the final; a non-first-class four-day affair, while the runners up will bag Rs 2.5 million. Out of a total prize pot of Rs 7.75 million, there will also be awards for individual performances. In the Group stage, Sahir Associates topped the Group D by winning four matches, while two of their games were drawn. Their quarter final and semi final fixtures against Ghani institute and JDW Sugar Mills respectively were drawn but they advanced to the next stage based on first innings lead both in the games. Sahir Associates' wicketkeeper-batter Asim Ali Nasir is second on the leading run-scorer list with 735 runs in 12 innings just six behind PAF's Atteq-ur-Rehman who sits atop. Asim has affected 23 dismissals behind the stumps. On the bowling front Mohammad Bilawal and Shahid Ali; both left arm pacers, have aided Sahir Associates' campaign with 31 and 22 scalps, respectively. MIT Solutions, who finished second in Group C with three wins, one loss and two draws out of six games, too took first innings lead in their drawn quarter final and semi final matches against Kingsmen and Wing 999, respectively. The batting duo of Muhammad Afzal (491 runs) and Husnain Nadeem (483 runs) has been prolific for MIT solutions.
