Hubballi: Labour and district minister Santosh Lad said that there are many lakes in the district, which are sources of drinking water.
As a precautionary measure for the safety of people, officials have been instructed to construct retaining walls for these lakes.
Speaking to reporters after offering condolences to the family whose children drowned in a lake recently at Yarinarayanapura village in Kundagol taluk on Saturday, Lad said that during the rainy season, lakes in rural areas fill up. The public and officials should take action in advance to prevent children from roaming around water bodies.
Steps are being taken to build barriers for lakes in the district. A retaining wall will be constructed for the lake in Yarinarayanapura village, he informed.
Sharifasab Chandukhan's sons, Muzammil and Mushir, from Yarinarayanapur village under Gudenakatti GP, died after drowning in a lake on June 19. Lad assured that he would personally meet the chief minister and request him to provide compensation to the family members from the CM's Relief Fund.

Lad said since the lake is very large, even after a barrier is built, parents should be careful not to let their children go towards the lake. "Anganwadi workers have been careful not to let children towards the lake, but children have been going near it. That is why this accident happened. The anganwadi centre located next to the lake in the village will be shifted. It is the responsibility of the parents and villagers to protect the children.
It is necessary to pay attention to the anganwadi centres," he appealed.
The Santosh Lad Foundation distributed Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased. MLA MR Patil, deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu, and other officials were present.

The temple's history, traditions and others would be narrated to devotees, which also helps in increasing the tourist inflows, the official said. The official said that idea came up with the recent development in which villagers came together and collected over Rs 3 crore to restore a 11th century temple lying in neglect for several years. The temple is located in Atmakur in Warangal district and it is the 'Panchakuta Shivalayam'. The locals said that the temple is known for couples desiring a child visit here and their wish is granted. Fishers seek investigation and compensation
Kochi: The Kerala Fisheries Co-ordination Committee called for a comprehensive investigation into the two ship accidents that took place off Kerala's coastal waters in the last few weeks. Chairman of the committee, T N Prathapan, said compensation should be given for the huge loss to the fisheries sector. He mentioned that both accidents occurred in the Malabar upwelling region, one of the world's top five fishing centres, which supplies 90% of the world's oil sardines and 95% of India's mackerel. These fish are sensitive to even minor climate changes. "The sardines, which disappeared in 2012, have shown signs of returning since 2022, but they are still being caught in small quantities. Since April this year, good rains started and the sardines have been thriving on plankton. It is in this context that the ship accidents occurred," he said. The MSC ELSA-3 ship with mysterious origins sank near Thottappally, close to the unique phenomenon of the Chakarapattu near the Kollam Bank. Debris has torn the nets of many vessels. When the Express Pearl ship sank near Colombo port in Sri Lanka in 2021, the spread of its plastic nurdles had severe consequences. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adidas Three Shorts With 60% Discount, Limited Stock Available Original Adidas Shop Now Undo Currently, with the water flow southward, nurdles are scattered up to Kanyakumari. When the flow reverses northward, the nurdles trapped in the rocks will spread throughout Kerala, the committee said in a statement. "The chemical waste that entered the waters must be removed urgently. Adequate compensation, not just a token amount, should be provided to the fishermen. Our demand to move the shipping lane 50 nautical miles away was rejected by the central govt, reducing it to just 50km, without addressing environmental concerns. Adequate compensation should be collected from the shipping company, as mandated by various international conventions. The court also stated that the shipping company, not the govt, should provide compensation," the committee.
