"Troubling": Bar Body Chief Seeks Release Of Influencer Sharmishta Panoli

New Delhi:
Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Kumar Mishra on Sunday called for immediate release and fair trial for Sharmishta Panoli, the Instagram influencer who was arrested by Kolkata Police for allegedly making a post claiming the Hindi film actors were silent on Operation Sindoor.
The senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member said that he was standing firmly with Panoli, whose arrest and judicial custody for a now-deleted social media video despite her immediate apology represented "an absolute failure of justice and a blatant assault on freedom of expression".
The 22-year-old influencer, a resident of Kolkata and enrolled in Pune's Law University, was arrested from Gurugram on Friday night.
She was on Saturday produced before a Kolkata court, which sent her in judicial custody till June 13.
"It is deeply troubling that the same government that opposed Operation Sindoor -- a decisive counter-terror operation -- meant to avenge the brutal killing of innocents, now seeks to silence a young law student for questioning such similar double standards," said Mishra in a statement.
A mere wrong choice of words cannot be called blasphemous and a young law student being made a scapegoat and subjected to harsh legal action, while past atrocities on particular communities by the government-sponsored persons and entities remained unaddressed was "unconscionable", the statement added.
"True democracy demands impartiality, restraint and the equal protection of rights, not selective outrage and vendetta," the statement said.
"I call upon the Bengal government and its police to abandon this dangerous path of targeting select voices and to uphold the rule of law for all. I demand Sharmishta's immediate release, a fair trial, and an end to the double standards that have long plagued the state's administration of justice," said Mishra.

Robotic lifebuoys coming to Mumbai beaches? Not so soon, BMC scraps plan amid fallout with Turkey

Mumbai will have to wait longer for the dream robotic lifebuoys as the city's civic body scrapped its plan to procure Turkey-made bot. As per the initial plan, these remotely-operated rescue machines were sought for deployment across Mumbai's half-a-dozen beaches, an official informed PTI. This decision comes in the wake of backlash over Turkey's role in supporting Pakistan and India-Turkey fallout post Operation Sindoor. Boycott Turkey goods calls were raised and trade relations strained between the two countries after Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government criticised India's terror clampdown and strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, these bots were to be deployed at Girgaum Chowpatty, Shivaji Park Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Aksa and Gorai beaches. However, a change in plan was made after Turkey openly condemned India's action in response to April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Affirming the development related to procurement of robotic lifebuoys, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said that the civic body has scrapped the plan to procure robotic lifebuoys manufactured in Turkey. Designed to assist lifeguards, the robotic lifebuoys would have been a part of search and rescue operation to save people from drowning. Equipped with dual water jets, each unit of robotic lifebuoys possess a 10,000 mAh rechargeable battery. With a carriage capacity of 200 kg, these remotely-operated rescue machines can cover a distance of 800 metres into the sea at speeds up to 18 km/h. BMC officials further informed PTI that the bot can operate for about an hour after one charge. Following the deal with the Eurasian country, the BMC faced strong criticism from political parties. BJP and Shiv Sena leaders had questioned and condemned the procurement of the machine from foreign supplier and had insisted on promoting indigenous production.

Tharoor on Trump's intervention in Indo-Pak ceasefire talks: 'We are not interested in...'

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took a tough stance on US President Donald Trump's 'peace deal' talks between India and Pakistan after the former retaliated to the latter's terrorist attack in Pahalgam of Kashmir on April 22, by launching 'Operation Sindoor' shortly after. Tharoor is in Washington to rally support for India amid tensions between the two neighbours. Man held on charges of sharing info with Pak during Op Sindoor

Chandigarh, June 3 (UNI) The Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested a person from Tarn Taran on the charges of spying for Pakistan and sharing sensitive information with Pakistan intelligence operatives and ISI about Operation Sindoor, police said. DGP Gaurav Yadav said that action was taken on the basis of information received from the police's counter-intelligence wing. Accused Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan allegedly had been in contact with the Pakistan ISI and Gopal Singh Chawla, sharing sensitive information concerning Army movements during Operation Sindhoor. Police said that investigations have revealed that he was engaged in sharing classified details, including troop deployment and strategic locations, posing a threat to national security. Gagandeep Singh had been in touch with Pakistan-based Khalistani supporter Gopal Singh Chawla for the past five years, through whom he was introduced to the Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). He also received payments from PIOs via Indianchannels, police said. Police said that they have recovered a mobile phone containing information that the accused shared with the PIOs, as well as the details of over 20 ISI contacts. "Thorough financial and technical investigations are underway to trace other linkages and establish the full scope of this espionage network," DGP said, adding an FIR has been registered under the Official Secrets Act at PS City, Tarn Taran, and further investigation was in progress.
