The Indiana Fever may just be one of, if not the unluckiest, team in the WNBA this season when it comes to injuries.
The Fever lost their third player in the last three weeks to a season-ending injury after announcing on Tuesday that guard Sophie Cunningham would miss the rest of the year after suffering a leg injury against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.
Cunningham, who saw an increase in playing time after star guard Caitlin Clark went down with a right groin injury that's sidelined her for the last four weeks and the team lost both Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson to season-ending injuries back in early August, played just 10 minutes in Sunday's 99-93 overtime win over the Connecticut Sun before leaving in the second quarter with an apparent leg injury.

While defending Sun guard Bria Hartley, Cunningham's leg was hit from behind by Hartley as she was falling to the ground. The Missouri alum immediately clutched her leg and fell to the court as she screamed in agony.

Many well-wishes came pouring in on social media after the news was announced, and Clark immediately took to Instagram to send her sympathies to Cunningham, who many labeled as Clark's personal enforcer earlier this season.

"Love you always soph @sophie_cham," Clark wrote on her Instagram story.
Cunningham had played in 30 of Indiana's 35 games this season, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while playing 25.2 minutes per night.
Her injury is a devastating blow to the injury-ravaged Fever, and though there's still hope they can make a postseason run if Clark comes back in time for the playoffs, things look pretty bleak for Indiana, which has just four healthy guards — Kelsey Mitchell, Lexie Hull, Odyssey Sims, and recently signed Shey Peddy.

Wings center Li Yueru is out for the season after spraining a knee ligament

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dallas Wings center Li Yueru will miss the rest of the season after spraining the ACL in her left knee against the Los Angeles Sparks last week. The team said Tuesday the 26-year-old from China is expected to make a full recovery. Li was injured in a 97-96 loss to the Sparks on Friday. She averaged 7.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in her third WNBA season, which was split between Seattle and Dallas. Li was traded in June. The injury to the 6-foot-7 Li is the latest in a series of setbacks for the Wings, who are mired near the bottom of the standings for a second consecutive season. They had the No. 1 pick in the draft this past spring and selected star guard Paige Bueckers. While Bueckers is a heavy favorite to be named WNBA Rookie of the Year, the Wings entered Tuesday with the third-worst record in the league. Li's injury comes with high-scoring guard Arike Ogunbowale sidelined by a right knee injury. ___ AP WNBA:

'Devastating' - WNBA Fans Crushed By Sophie Cunningham's Injury Diagnosis

'Devastating' - WNBA Fans Crushed By Sophie Cunningham's Injury Diagnosis originally appeared on The Spun. WNBA fans are crushed by Sophie Cunningham's injury diagnosis on Tuesday afternoon, August 19. Cunningham, 29, suffered a right leg injury in the first half of Sunday's overtime win over the Connecticut Sun. The former University of Missouri star was hit in the leg by Sun guard Bria Hartley, who was driving to the basket when the collision happened. Cunningham, traded from the Phoenix Mercury to the Indiana Fever this offseason, was down on the ground in serious pain before getting helped off of the floor. The Indiana Fever guard missed the rest of her team's 99-93 win over the Connecticut Sun and underwent an MRI on Monday, August 18. Her injury diagnosis was announced by the team on Tuesday. The Indiana Fever announced on Tuesday afternoon that Cunningham has been diagnosed with a season-ending knee injury. She will not return in 2025. "Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the season after suffering an injury during our game at Connecticut on Sunday. In a corresponding move, we have signed guard Shey Peddy to a 7-day hardship contract and released Kyra Lambert," the Fever announced on Tuesday afternoon. Indiana Fever fans are "devastated" Immediately following the injury diagnosis, Fever fans took to social media, to weigh in on the news. They're crushed. "Absolutely tragic. This team has suffered so much," one fan wrote. "So Caitlin and Sophie out. Ratings and ticket sales gonna crater," one fan added. "Noooo. Why does this team seem to have an abnormal amount of injuries caused by player to player altercation than any other team in the league? Probably random?" one fan added. "Sorry Sophie. What occurred is not basketball. Officiating is non-existing. The girls on the Fever should sue the officials and the WBNA. What keeps occurring here is unacceptable. Please rest up and get well Miss," one fan added. "Do you perhaps think it's time to do something about the refs, and the toxic players who are causing physical harm to other players???????" one fan added. Peddy will look to step up in Cunningham's absense Peddy, signed to a 7-day contract on Tuesday, will look to step up in Cunningham's absence. She comes with a nice pedigree, having been named the Defensive Player of the Year at Athletes Unlimited, while also making the All-Defensive Team during the four-week offseason event. She averaged 5.9 points and 2.3 assists while shooting 40.2 from the field over the course of her WNBA career. It's go-time for the Fever The Fever, 19-16 on the year, are facing a major turning point in the 2025 season. Indiana currently sits in sixth place in the WNBA.
