The Herald18-07-2025
The man suspected of shooting dead two young women at a flat in Central before turning the gun on himself on Friday morning was a police officer.
'Police can confirm that the [dead man] found on the scene was a 32-year-old off-duty police constable who was stationed at Algoa Park,' police spokesperson Lt-Col Siphokazi Mawisa said.
An inquest docket and double murder case have been opened.
Mawisa said Humewood detectives had responded to the scene at Gordon Terrace at about 9.30am.
'On arrival, they found the bodies of two women and a man with gunshot wounds.
'The motive for the double murder is unclear, however, a police investigation is under way.
'Information regarding the deceased will only be released once their next-of-kin have been informed.'
According to bystanders, the two women worked as waitresses at a popular Gqeberha beachfront bar.

Ten SAPS, EMPD officers held for theft released on bail of R1,500 each

Ten police officers who appeared before the Germiston magistrate's court on Tuesday and Wednesday on charges of theft were each granted bail of R1,500 after an unopposed bail application. They are Fortune Dhlamini, Nomfuneko Felicia Sambane, Mangalore Moloko, Nhlanhla Tumelo Matsane, Thabo Mokgaboki, Matthews Mashala, Mesho Hector Mabasa, Dlalisa Eugene Zamokuhle, Kgagare Tseego and Sidebi Tendani. 'The case stems from a complaint laid by a shop owner in Edenvale, who alleges that during a raid on his business premises on June 4, the officers seized R35,000 in cash, cigarettes worth R150,000 and boxes of Panado tablets,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said. She said the officers, six from Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and four from the SA Police Service, were part of a joint law enforcement operation aimed at monitoring compliance at shops in the area. 'According to the complainant, he was not present during the raid but was later informed by his cashier that the police had confiscated the items. The seized goods were allegedly placed in several refuse bags to be submitted as exhibits.' However, the complainant claims that upon his arrival at the police station, only one refuse bag had been registered. The cash was neither returned nor recorded in the SAP13 register, the official register used for documenting exhibits seized during criminal investigations. The matter was postponed until September 8 for further investigation. TimesLIVE

R500m hostel project half done but poor safety and overcrowding persist

At Jeppe Hostel, tenant Celamandla Majola said the upgrades had improved his living conditions but not his sense of safety. 'Our living conditions are now better but there is no safety. At night we hear gunshots, especially in summer,' said Majola. Having moved in five years ago after being told he could stay without paying rent, he now lives with four others in a unit with fixed windows, painted walls, tiles and running taps. Another tenant, Khayalethu Mhlongo, said the changes have brightened the space. 'It used to be dark and scary but now the painting brings life. I can even do video calls to my siblings because it feels better,' he said. He hopes future upgrades will include beds and kitchen stoves. Residents say overcrowding remains a daily struggle. In one unit, six people live together with a makeshift shop operating inside the small space. 'It is a bit cleaner now but too many of us share one room. The shop helps me survive but this is not how a person should live,' said shop owner Thabo Khumalo. The department aims to complete all refurbishments on the six hostels by May 2026 with monthly monitoring visits planned to keep work on track. TimesLIVE

Police close probe into missing R465k Sedibeng mayoral chain

She then referred Sowetan to the NPA for reasons not to prosecute. The NPA is yet to respond. When asked for a comment, Maloka said: 'I am unable to comment about a process which was never in my control to give you acceptable outcomes. 'The municipality has a comprehensive security system in place in and around the office, which to date no-one knows or no report is available on how it was breached, so that improvements sought are informed accordingly.' DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala described the closure of the case as disturbing. 'This is a serious matter that leaves suspicions, as the case has be suddenly closed without any arrests or recovery of the mayoral chain,' he said. Chabalala has since written to Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, calling for urgent intervention in what he describes as an 'unresolved matter'. In the letter, he raised concerns about transparency, accountability and the handling of public assets within the Sedibeng district municipality. 'The disappearance of a ceremonial asset valued at nearly half a million rand, coupled with the lack of transparency and accountability, undermines public trust in the municipality's leadership. 'Your intervention is critical to restoring confidence and ensuring that those responsible for any negligence or misconduct are held accountable. I trust that your office will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it demands. Please keep me informed of any actions taken or progress made in addressing this issue,' reads part of the letter. SowetanLIVE
