Texas A&M to big leagues: 11 Aggies set to participate in MLB Draft Combine
The Texas A&M baseball program will have five players and six signees from the 2025 class participate in the MLB Draft Combine this week.
According to a report from GigEm247 reporter Carter Karels, left-handed pitchers Justin Lamkin, Myles Patton and Sgane Sdao, along with shortstop Kaeden Kent and center fielder Jace LaViolette, are the five Aggies who are set to compete at the combine, which kicks off Tuesday at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
Three of those athletes are ranked in the top 200 draft prospects by MLB.com, with LaViolette now projected to be selected by the Milwaukee Brewers at the No. 20 spot in this year's draft. He capped off his collegiate career in his junior season with the Aggies this year with gutsy performances, such as playing through the SEC Tournament with a broken hand. The Katy, Texas, native slashed .285/.432/.651 during his time in College Station.
Also included in the top 200 prospects rankings are two players from the 2025 class. Left-hander Johnny Slawinski (63rd) and outfielder Josiah Hartshorn (106th) round out Texas A&M baseball's prospects on the list. Joining Slawinski and Hartshorn from this year's recruiting class to enter the MLB Draft Combine are shortstops Nicholas Partida, Boston Kellner, and Matthew Boughton, along with outfielder Blaine Bullard.
Every Texas A&M baseball player intending on participating in the combine is eligible to return to the program, depending on how they perform and where their draft stock trends over the coming days.
There is no sugarcoating how the 2025 campaign ended for the Aggies was well below expectations set at the beginning of the year. Heading into this year's campaign, the club was ranked as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country during the preseason, which quickly faded as the program finished the season unranked and missed competing in the postseason for the first time since 2021. That mark left a sour taste in the mouths of Aggie fans across the country, as many continue to hope for head coach Michael Earley to turn things around in 2026.
However, let's not get too ahead of ourselves here. The Aggies' skipper has done a tremendous job in the transfer portal, bringing in multiple top-rated portal prospects like former Florida Atlantic outfielder Jake Duer and pitcher MJ Bollinger. Earley's club also learned on Tuesday that outfielder Caden Sorrell will return for his junior season for the Aggies this year, which provides a major spark and depth to the Texas A&M outfield.
The production lost to the MLB Draft is nothing to breeze over. Leaders like LaViolette and Kent, along with the 2025 signees, are huge hits to a program clamoring to make it back to the College World Series after reaching the championship game against Tennessee in 2024.
Time will tell just how many players the program will lose to this year's MLB Draft, but it all depends on how they perform starting on Tuesday when the 2025 MLB Draft Combine commences.

'There is a genuine energy around the program': Texas A&M head coach previews season
Before he leads the Texas A&M football program on the gridiron this fall, second-year head coach Mike Elko appeared at the Fort Worth Stockyards to talk ball on Coach's Night with the Fort Worth A&M Club on Tuesday night. Elko led the Aggies to a record of 8-5 (5-3 in SEC) in his first season in Bryan-College Station, Texas, which marks the first eight-win season for the program since 2021. The 2024 campaign had a fair share of good moments, but some aspects need improvement this season if Texas A&M wants the 12-team College Football Playoff. "We're really proud of the foundation that we've laid in the first year here for what Texas A&M football is and where it's going." The South Brunswick, N.J., native recruited tremendously in the offseason by bringing in top-rated athletes like former NC State wideout KC Concepcion, who is projected to make an immediate impact for the Aggies this season. During his appearance at Coach's Night, Elko expressed his thoughts on the junior wide receiver and what he brings to the table for the offense this season, according to TexAgs. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle "KC Concepcion has been exceptional... He could be a captain," Elko said. "He has been unbelivable with his work ethic, his commitment to doing things the way we want to do them. He has been a role model for our younger guys." With targets like Concepcion, Mississippi State transfer Mario Craver Jr., Terry Bussey, Izaiah Williams and Ashton Bethel-Roman to throw to, it also takes a quarterback who can be accurate and find ways to get the ball to those targets. Texas A&M has just that with dual-threat sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed, who has stepped up as a leader and continued to strengthen his game during the offseason. "Marcel (Reed) has been great," Elko said at Coach's Night on Tuesday. "I don't think anybody really appreciates the development that Marcel made because a lot of his development happened at the end of the year when we didn't get the results we wanted. We have to finish those games and get the results, but if you're looking for signs of growth from the quarterback, those signs were there. We think we've got a really, really good quarterback this year." When competing in the Southeastern Conference, it is integral to protect your gunslinger. It all starts up front for the Aggies this season, as the veteran group prepares to anchor the Texas A&M offense this season. Elko had high praise for the group when talking with the Fort Worth A&M Club on Tuesday night. "The roster starts with the offensive line, and any time you can talk about the roster starting with the offensive line, you feel pretty good about what you can accomplish," Elko said. "We return our top seven linemen. We're really excited about the veteran experience we have with that group ." Along with an experienced offensive line, a talented wide receiving corps, and Reed at the helm, the running back room is just as dangerous. Ranked as one of the best groups in the SEC heading into 2025, the projected starter Le'Veon Moss is set to have an explosive season. Moss suffered an injury last season that sidelined him from November until the end of last year's campaign. However, he seems to be recovering well and is undoubtedly chomping at the bit to get back on the field this fall. "It's great to have Le'Veon Moss back and heathy. He looks awesome," Elko said. "He has done an unbelivable job of rehab to get himself to in position where he's running full-speed right now." The defensive unit for the Aggies needed major rebuilding after losing Shemar Stewart, Shemart Turner and Nic Scourton to the 2025 NFL Draft. Players like senior Cashius Howell will play key roles in filling the holes on that side of the ball. "When you lose a first-rounder and two second-rounders, it's not easy," Elko said. "I think Cashius Howell is the first guy that jumps out to you. I think Cashius is going to be an elite player." Elko is leading the program in the right direction, both on the field and in recruiting. Texas A&M landed a huge commitment on Tuesday, as running back KJ Edwards, who ranks as the No. 2 player at the position in the country, bumped the Aggies to No. 2 in 247 Sports' recruiting rankings. Earning one of the top recruiting classes in the country so far for 2026 is a testament to the work Elko and the company are doing to build the program back to its winning ways. More than that, they are building a welcoming environment with everyone focused on getting better. "The feeling when you're around our team and around our players, they genuinely enjoy being in the building. They genuinely enjoy going to workout," Elko said. "There is a genuine energy around the program, and that's something recruits feel. There is a process of getting the program into a position where you can consistently win. We feel like all those indicators are pointing in the right direction." The Texas A&M football program will begin this year's campaign on August 30 against UTSA. Kickoff from Kyle Field is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN. Ex-MLB Executive Urges Tigers To Acquire Bullpen Help Ahead Of Deadline
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers led the American League Central by 9 1/2 games entering Wednesday, and former MLB executive Jim Bowden of The Athletic believes they should acquire reinforcements in the bullpen. Bowden proposed a potential trade between the Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates for closer David Bednar. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 7: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates reacts after the final out in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies during the game at PNC Park on June 7, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. More Photo byAfter spending five games in Triple-A Indianapolis earlier this season, Bednar has regained trust at the major league level and is showing signs of the closer he was in 2023, when he saved 39 games. Bowden thinks that the Tigers could be in use of another "high-leverage reliever" and Bednar certainly fits the bill even through his struggles to start the season. Bowden proposed that the Tigers would send 17-year-old outfield prospect Cris Rodriguez in return. Rodriguez was a highly rated prospect in this year's international class and has serious upside potential. While he isn't ranked on the Tigers' top 30 prospect list on MLB Pipeline, he was signed to the biggest contract the Tigers have ever give to an international prospect. Rodriguez is still more than a couple years away from the majors, but with the direction that the Pirates season is headed, this could be the upside-focused play they need to set things in motion. Bednar would fit right into the backend of a Tigers bullpen, a group that has no clear-cut closer, and could give them a daunting three-headed monster in October between Bednar, Tommy Kahnle, and Will Vest. Orioles Trade Candidate Pokes Fun at Craig Breslow After Trading Away Rafael Devers
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, but may have accidentally helped one of the Baltimore Orioles' best players. Devers is now the second-leading vote getter among designated hitters in the National League, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale on Monday, after he was traded. Devers had 796,382 votes on Monday night. That would have been first among designated hitters in the American League, well ahead of Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn, who had 353,029 votes on Monday. O'Hearn appeared on "Foul Territory" on Tuesday and made sure to make a joke at Craig Breslow's expense, thanking him for making him the top vote-getter. BOSTON, MA - NOVEMBER 2: Craig Breslow speaks as he is officially introduced as Chief Baseball Officer of the Boston Red Sox during a press conference on November 2, 2023 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. More Maddie Malhotra/Boston"I just want to shoutout Craig Breslow real quick," O'Hearn said jokingly in a clip posted on the "Foul Territory" X account. "Appreciate you, man." The Orioles are 11 games under .500 and O'Hearn is going to be a free agent after the season. He has a .306/.386/.495 slash line in 59 games. He is a candidate to be traded as the Orioles are set up to be sellers at the deadline. The Orioles are not likely to trade away their younger stars. However, O'Hearn is 31 years old and could demand a big contract in the offseason. Spotrac projects him to earn a two-year, $28 million deal in free agency. If the Orioles do not intend to pay him, they could flip him for a prospect before the trade deadline. In reality, there is no guarantee that O'Hearn remains in the AL by the time the All-Star break rolls around. He could quickly find himself behind Devers in the All-Star voting again if he is dealt to an NL team. More MLB: Insider Reveals Red Sox's Reasons For Dumping Rafael Devers in Devastating Trade
