Gautam Gambhir makes new claim on Shreyas Iyer's Test omission, says 'it's always about...'
New Delhi: Several important players were not included in India's 18-member squad for the five-Test tour in England starting from June 20. It's especially important to mention that Shreyas Iyer is not in the squad even after his impressive ODI and T20 form lately. Initially mum, Gautam Gambhir mentioned later that players who keep scoring will still be considered.
'Anyone can be called if they are in good form. We can only pick 18. But I believe it's always about being open to people who are in good form and can deliver,' Gambhir told reporters in Mumbai on Thursday.
Earlier, when Gambhir was asked about Shreyas' omission, Gambhir said, 'I'm not the selector'.
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar commented on Shreyas Iyer during the team announcement:
'Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him in the Test Team.'
During the 2025 season, Shreyas Iyer delivered great performances and became India's top scorer for the Champions Trophy win.
Iyer's show for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 lived up to the expectations set by his big contract. He helped his team reach the final and was their best run-scorer, finishing with 604 runs in 17 games at a great strike rate of 175.
As given by the BCCI and ECB, the series will now be known as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, paying homage to Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson.

Sunil Gavaskar questions Sachin Tendulkar, James Anderson absence during Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy presentation
Among the talking points going into what ended up being an epic five-Test series between India and England was the name of the trophy itself. The Pataudi Trophy had been retired, leading to criticism from multiple quarters, and was replaced by the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, named after England fast bowling great James Anderson and India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar. Strangely, though, both were nowhere to be seen during the presentation ceremony. Sunil Gavaskar questioned this in his column for Sportstar. 'This was the first-ever series named after Sachin Tendulkar and Jimmy Anderson, two of cricket's greatest legends. One would have expected both to be present to give the trophy to the two captains, especially since the series ended in a draw,' he said. Anderson continues to play domestic cricket and was in action in England at the time that the series was taking place. Tendulkar, meanwhile, was there for the unveiling of the trophy and Gavaskar has said that the former India captain was in England to the best of his knowledge. Gavaskar drew parallels to what happened earlier in the year in Australia, where he was not included in the presentation ceremony and it was just Allan Border at the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The reasoning given at the time was that this was because it was Australia that had won the series. 'To the best of one's knowledge, both were in England at the time. So, were they simply not invited? Or was this similar to what happened in Australia earlier this year, when only Allan Border was asked to present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy because Australia had won the series? Since this England series was drawn, perhaps neither was asked to attend the presentation,' he said. Gavaskar also slammed the practice of giving the newly instated Pataudi medal to the winning captain of the series instead of the player of the series. India captain Shubman Gill and England skipper Ben Stokes were both given a medal each with the series drawn 2-2. 'Mostly around the world, administrators are brought in to ensure profits and are quite good at it, but they may not have much knowledge about the history of the sport they are presiding over. So, these little gestures are not in their scheme of things. Nobody from the Pataudi family was there either, for the Pataudi medal, which was to be presented to the winning team's captain. 'The drawn series showed how silly this idea was of trying to make up to the Pataudis by retiring the trophy named after them. Every time the series is drawn, the medal can't be presented, can it? Wouldn't it be better, therefore, to have the medal for the Man of the Series than give it to the winning team's captain? And what if the captain himself has had an ordinary series and had little impact on the result?' said Gavaskar.

If Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar can...': Sarfaraz Khan questions BCCI intent for...
If Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar can...': Sarfaraz Khan questions BCCI intent for... New Delhi: Sarfaraz Khan, the neglected batsman of the Indian team, believes that all Mumbai cricketers should take part in the Kanga League competition. Sarfaraz himself took part in this tournament held in the monsoon season and said that players should not avoid playing in it for fear of failure. He was ignored by the selectors for the five-match Test series against England, but he made headlines with his brilliant fitness transformation and performance on the field. Playing for Parkophene Cricketers against Islam Gymkhana, he scored 61 runs in 42 balls. Why is Kanga League special for Sarfaraz? Sarfaraz said, 'I was so excited about this match that the reporting time was 8:30, but I reached at 8 o'clock itself. Batting on the pitch was not easy; once, the ball also hit my helmet. There was a thick layer of grass on the outfield, which was making it difficult to hit fours.' He recalled that in his childhood, he had heard from his father, Naushad Khan, that Sunil Gavaskar had come to play Kanga League the same day after returning from England. That is why Sarfaraz and his younger brother Mushir feel proud to play in this tournament. Can this tournament change the careers of players? Sarfaraz said, 'Some players think that failure here will affect their careers, but if Gavaskar Sir and Sachin Tendulkar Sir had also thought so, they would not have become legends. If big players play in this tournament, it will be an inspiration for the youth of the city.' He also added that if someone succeeds in Kanga League, he can score runs on any ground in the world. Preparing to return to Team India Sarfaraz played Kanga League after three years and gained confidence by looking at his old performance. His name may be under consideration for selection for the upcoming two-Test series, and with this performance, he has given a strong message to the selectors.
