Bengaluru stampede: Police officials acted like ‘servants of RCB', Karnataka government tells HC
The stampede had taken place at Gate Number 3 of the stadium on June 4, where fans had gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory in the Indian Premier League. Eleven persons were killed and more than 50 were injured.
On Thursday, the Karnataka government's counsel told the court that the police officers had started making arrangements for the victory celebrations without ascertaining who had permitted the event.
The government claimed that the cricket team had submitted an application to the police proposing a victory celebration even before the final cricket match had begun, Live Law reported.
The cricketing team's potential first victory in the league was expected to be emotionally charged, the state's counsel said, adding that the police failed to alert the public or adequately make arrangements.
When the court asked who was responsible for arrangements inside the stadium, the state's counsel responded: 'State police officials.'
The government also defended the suspension of Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, accusing the officer of failing to do his duty and causing ' public embarrassment ', the Hindustan Times reported.
'It was necessary to do so [suspending Vikash] to find out who was responsible for the incident,' the state argued.
The case will continue to be heard on Friday.
On June 5, the state government suspended Vikash and four others, accusing them of dereliction of duty. Vikash had challenged the suspension before the Central Administrative Tribunal, which said that the officer was suspended without sufficient grounds.
The tribunal directed the state government to reinstate Vikash immediately, prompting the state to approach the High Court.
Status report presented to HC
The state government has submitted its status report on the matter to the High Court, PTI reported on Thursday, quoting unidentified persons.
The report has highlighted that the organisers of the event never sought formal police permission as per the law and instead only informed the police about a potential gathering, according to the news agency.
It has also alleged that key details, such as 'the number of participants, assembly point, timing, names and contact details of people in charge of organising the event, and plans for traffic and crowd control, were entirely missing', PTI reported.

Despite the form dwindle, the MP all-rounder insists that the KKR management still trusts him. Moreover, he reveals that KKR CEO Venky Mysore did his best to not let him get affected by the whopping price attached with him. 'It's not about just the money, it's about where I fit in their scheme of things. Venky sir once told me something, which I felt made a lot of sense. He said, 'At the end of the day, you are given 120 units to build a team. Once the team is built, it doesn't matter how many units you have spent on what. It is a team that has been made now, that's it,' he added. Iyer focuses on the positives he was able attain from IPL 2025 While it was a torrid season for KKR, who started the campaign as the defending champions but ended up finishing 8th this time, Iyer was able to extract some positives out of it. 'Yeah, I have taken the learnings, taken the positives, and whatever mistakes happened. But yeah, there were a lot of things that have come up that I feel hindered my performance. But all in all, good one or bad one, winning the trophy or not winning it, scoring 600-700 runs, that and all is different. It was a season full of learning, and that is what is constant.' CSK Paid 'Extra' For Dewald Brevis During IPL 2025? R Ashwin Makes Major Revelation
Dewald Brevis was one of the top performers for Chennai Super Kings during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The South Africa cricketer came as a substitute replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for Rs 2.2 crore. However, he impressed everyone by smashing 225 runs in just 6 matches at a strike rate of around 180. Former India spinner R Ashwin has now revealed that CSK may have paid 'extra' in order to beat other teams to sign Brevis. During a recent YouTube discussion, Ashwin said that the franchise paid some extra money over the base price to ensure that Brevis signed with them despite interest from several other franchises at that moment. Brevis' base price was Rs 75 lakh. "I will tell you something. About Brevis. He had a great time last IPL with CSK. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. "That happens because the player knows if he is released next season, he will go for good money. So his concept was that, you pay me good money now else I will go for more next year. And CSK were ready to pay him, hence he came. In the back half, the CSK combination was strong. They will go with Rs 30 crore in IPL 2026 mini auction," Ashwin added.
