Vice Presidential Election 2025: Laxman is favourite contender for V-P role

Hans India30-07-2025
Hyderabad: Dr. K. Laxman, a senior BJP leader from Telangana and a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, is under serious consideration as a candidate from the NDA camp. His position as the National President of the BJP OBC Morcha, combined with his role as a member of the parliamentary board that oversees the party's internal electoral process, underscores his significance in the political landscape. He has consistently advocated for backwards classes and has been a vocal critic of the opposition Congress and its policies, making him a strategically important political choice. This consideration comes amid the ongoing conflict between the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led INDIA bloc over the BC caste census.
The election for the Vice-President has become more competitive following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's return from his foreign tours to the UK and the Maldives. The party is actively searching for a suitable candidate who can effectively lead the Rajya Sabha and has finalised a list of probable candidates. However, it was shared with the RSS, its ideological fountainhead, and so far, the candidates have not been finalised, said party sources.
The election for India's second-highest constitutional post has been set in motion by the Election Commission of India (ECI), which has appointed Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Mody as the Returning Officer. Garima Jain and Vijay Kumar have been named as Assistant Returning Officers, signalling the formal commencement of the electoral process.
According to party sources, Dr. K. Laxman, a first-time Rajya Sabha MP from a backwards class background, is one of several candidates under consideration. Others include Union Minister of State for Agriculture Ram Nath Thakur, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh, the BJP's outgoing national president and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and Tiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, who is also speculated as a potential candidate.
A senior BJP leader pointed out that the Vice-President candidate needs 394 votes to win the election, with the effective strength of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha totalling 786. Currently, the BJP-NDA has 422 votes compared to the INDIA bloc's 312 votes. Making the BJP-led NDA candidate comfortably win the election. However, the party weighing to send a message against the backdrop of the sudden resignation of the former Vice-President Dhankar created quite a stir within the NDA and outside of political circles, turning it into a political tool for the opposition to take on the ruling party dispensation.
However, with the NDA's dominance in Parliament and strategic candidate selection underway, the Vice Presidential election is poised to reinforce the BJP's institutional hold. The official schedule is expected imminently, setting the stage for a high-stakes constitutional contest.

Bengal: FIR against BJP MLA Ashok Dinda for ‘threatening' police personnel

THE KOLKATA Police on Saturday registered an FIR against former cricketer and BJP MLA Ashok Dinda for allegedly threatening police personnel during a 'Nabanna march' to mark the completion of one year of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to sources in the Kolkata Police, Dinda is purportedly seen threatening police officers in video footage. 'Mr Dinda, during the rally, threatened and verbally abused our officers on duty. He also assaulted the guard of an IAS officer. Luckily, the personnel wasn't injured because he was wearing a helmet,' a police officer told PTI. A senior police officer told The Indian Express, 'We are still checking the video footage. If we find visuals in which any others are also threatening or misbehaving with our officers, we will file FIRs in those cases as well.' On Saturday, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, along with other BJP MLAs including Dinda, also participated in the protest from the Park Street end. When the march was blocked with barricades, BJP supporters tried to break the barricades and march towards Nabanna, the headquarters of the state secretariat. Some BJP leaders and MLAs got into arguments with the police personnel deployed at the spot. As of Saturday evening, a total of six FIRs have been registered against protesters in connection with the 'Nabanna march', police said. -with PTI inputs Atri Mitra is a Special Correspondent of The Indian Express with more than 20 years of experience in reporting from West Bengal, Bihar and the North-East. India plans tariff response to US over steel, aluminium levy

India may slap tariff countermeasures on select American commodities, a retaliation to Washington's move to impose a steep 50% duty in June on steel, aluminium and their derivatives from India, people aware of the matter have said. India plans tariff response to US over steel, aluminium levy To be sure, the levies on steel and aluminium have played out as a parallel trade dispute at the World Trade Organization, but its timing would make it the first Indian retaliation since Trump's July 31 announcement of the 25% tariff on all Indian goods entering the US when trade talks failed to reach a breakthrough and his subsequent penalties over Russian oil purchases announced on August 6. According to people aware of the matter, India has prepared legal grounds for the retaliatory action on steel and aluminium under World Trade Organization rules after the US rejected New Delhi's request for consultations over what India considers WTO-non-compliant safeguard measures disguised as national security actions. 'Washington is unwilling to address New Delhi's concerns through talks, which leaves India with little option other than to retaliate,' one person said. The steel and aluminium dispute dates back to February when the Trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on the metals, later doubling them to 50% in June. New Delhi intimated the WTO about the dispute and India's rights to take proportionate action on May 9 after at least $7.6 billion worth of Indian exports to the US were affected by the duties. 'The US is unjustly acting against India's economic interests even as the two countries are negotiating a bilateral trade agreement. India reserves the right to respond to unilateral and unreasonable actions of the US,' a second person said, adding that the beginning of the retaliation could be made with a 'proportional response to the US imposition of 50% tariff on Indian steel, aluminium and their derivatives'. America exports over $45 billion worth of merchandise to the Indian market, while India – prior to the Trump administration's wide variety of tariffs –exported $86 billion worth merchandise to US. How this balance changes is uncertain. Between February — when President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi resolved to expand bilateral trade to $500 billion and launch comprehensive trade negotiations — and the last two weeks, when Trump announced Indian exports will be slapped with 50% levy from August 28, the journey has been turbulent. The trade talks stalled, primarily over US seeking unfettered market access to economically sensitive sectors that New Delhi steadfastly refused, before appearing to be beset by the controversy around Russian oil purchases. 'These unilateral, unjustified and unreasonable actions of the Trump administration raise doubt about its intent to have a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement,' another person said. The escalating tariffs have effectively undermined bilateral trade negotiations, with India arguing that arm-twisting tactics make fair negotiations impossible. According to one of the people cited above, what has affected the retaliation calculus was Trump's comments on Thursday, when he rejected stepping up trade negotiations with India. 'No, not until we get it resolved,' the president said at the Oval Office when asked about increased trade talks. The broader trade relationship includes America's $13.62 billion in energy exports to India in 2024-25, plus significant trade in electronics, chemicals, and other goods, highlighting the scale of economic interdependence between the two countries. The US also maintains a services trade surplus with India of $102 million in 2024, with total bilateral services trade reaching $83.4 billion. US services exports to India totalled $41.8 billion, up 15.9% from 2023, while imports reached $41.6 billion, up 15.4%.

Joga Singh's arrest will expose more culprits in 2015 drug racket: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema

Chandigarh: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Saturday said that the arrest of Joga Singh, a former personal security officer (PSO) of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, marks a significant step forward in the 2015 drug racket case. Cheema alleged that the delay in the case was due to the culprits' political connections with leaders from both the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress. Talking to mediapersons, Cheema said Joga Singh is alleged to have played a key role in facilitating communication between Khaira and both Gurdev Singh, a convicted person in the case, and his UK-based sister, Charanjit Kaur. According to the minister, Joga Singh used his mobile phone to arrange these calls while Gurdev Singh was a fugitive. He added that call detail analysis revealed multiple instances where Joga Singh and Gurdev Singh were at the same location, even in Khaira's absence. Talking about the events leading to the arrest, Cheema said Joga Singh, who was absconding since being named an accused in a case on Sept 28, 2023, had his bail denied by both the Fazilka sessions court in Oct 2023 and the high court in Jan 2024. He was eventually detained by immigration authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi while attempting to flee to Australia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This new air conditioner cools down a room in just seconds News of the Discovery Undo His capture was facilitated by a look out circular (LoC) issued by a special investigation team (SIT) in Nov 2023. Meanwhile, giving an update on the anti-drug campaign, Cheema claimed that since its launch, 16,062 cases were registered under the NDPS Act, leading to the arrest of 25,177 individuals. Additionally, 178 illegal properties belonging to drug smugglers were demolished. Major seizures include 1,044 kg of heroin, 21,309 kg of poppy husk, 365 kg of opium, and nearly 3.2 million tablets, capsules, and pills.
