Youth killed, minor girl injured in Jehanabad celebratory firing
Patna: A 17-year-old youth was killed and a 12-year-old girl was seriously injured in a celebratory firing during a dance programme of a wedding at Korma village under Ghosi police station area in Jehanabad district on Saturday night.
The youth, Roshan Kumar, son of Rajesh Yadav of Korma village, was rushed to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for treatment but he succumbed to his injuries, while the injured girl was undergoing treatment at the hospital. She is the daughter of Judagi Bind of the same village, police said. Sadar SDPO, Sanjeev Kumar, said, "The shooter is Vijay's brother-in-law's son, who is on the run after the incident, while the girl's entire family has left their home. The police are investigating the matter and arrests will be made soon." It was the wedding of Vijay Bind's daughter and the baraat had come from Dina Bigaha village under Makhadumpur police station area, he said.Ghosi station house officer (SHO), Dadan Prasad, said a dance programme was underway at the wedding venue. Meanwhile, three unidentified youths climbed on the stage and started firing with a double-barrelled gun. A boy and a girl, who were watching the event, sustained bullet injuries in their stomach. "The injured youth and the girl were rushed to the sadar hospital for treatment. From there, the youth was referred to the PMCH where the doctors declared him dead. An FIR has been filed on the statements of the deceased's family against unidentified persons. Raids are being carried out to nab the accused," the SHO added.

Security up at 3 places in Ganjam after man crushed under chariot wheels
1 2 Berhampur: A day after a 32-year-old man was allegedly crushed to death under the wheels of a chariot at Sikula in Ganjam district, security has been tightened in places where Rath Yatra was held on Saturday. Chariots are pulled by devotees in Digapahandi, Dharakote and Surangi, a day after Puri. Hundreds of people from nearby villages pulled the chariot in Digapahandi and Dharakote, while several people from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and tribals thronged Surangi in Patrapur block to participate in the festival. Siba Behera of Sikula died after the chariot allegedly ran over him on Friday. He was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries late evening, police said. "We are investigating the incident," said Deepak Mishra, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Purushottampur. "Following the accident, we have asked police officers to keep strict vigil on chariot pulling in their areas," said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M. He said adequate forces were also deployed in Surangi and Digapahandi to ensure incident-free Rath Yatra. "Ever since the Jagannath Temple was built in Surangi, located near the Andhra Pradesh border, by the then king in the 18th century, the pulling of chariot was done a day after Puri Rath Yatra," said Anchal Pradhan, an elderly resident. Similar tradition continues in Dharakote and Digapahandi. "Bahuda Yatra will also be observed in these places a day after the traditional return car festival. It's our tradition since the temple was established," said Kuresh Patra, an advocate in Digapahandi. According to legends, everyone went to participate in the Rath Yatra in nearby places, including Jarada and Chikiti, leaving behind hardly any devotee to pull chariots in Digapahandi, Dharakote and Surangi. This propmpted the kings to postpone the pulling of chariots for a day. Rath Yatra was celebrated in Jarada on Friday, where Lord Jagannath is worshipped as Lord Parthasarathi.

Woman found dead in Khusrupur
Patna: A 24-year-old woman was found dead at her in-laws' place in the Khusrupur police station area of Patna district on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Simran Kumari, wife of Raju Verma. The police arrested her husband after the victim's family alleged that Raju committed dowry-related murder. According to the victim's aunt, Kusum Kumari, Simran's marriage to Raju Verma took place seven years ago. The family provided Rs 1.5 lakh in cash, along with gold jewellery during the wedding. However, the in-laws continued demanding Rs 50,000, a bed, and a large television set. Khusrupur police have initiated a thorough investigation after arresting the husband for interrogation. The police stated that the actual cause of death will be determined following the postmortem report and detailed inquiry. Fatuha's sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) I, Pankaj Kumar, said the police received reports of a woman hanging herself near Neem Tal. "When the police reached the spot, the body was lying on the bed. The police sent the body for postmortem. Further proceedings will commence upon receiving the formal application," he said.

IIT Madras Intern Sexually Harassed By Food Court Staff
Chennai: A 22-year-old man has been arrested allegedly for sexually harassing an intern at the IITM (Madras), police said on Saturday. The arrested was working at a food court inside the institute and he allegedly sexually harassed a 20-year-old intern on the campus on June 25 night, police said. Taking suo moto cognizance of the offence, the National Commission for Women chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Tamil Nadu DGP calling for a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS, 2023. 'NCW has also directed the authorities to ensure the victim receives immediate medical and psychological support,' the Commission said in a post on the social media platform X on Saturday. The incident occurred around 7.30 pm when the woman intern was walking alone in the campus. According to Kotturpuram police, the man who held a stick went close to her and pulled her hair. Immediately, the intern raised an alarm. The security personnel on the campus rushed to her rescue. The police later identified the suspect as one Roshan Kumar, a native of Maharashtra, who was working at a food court in IIT (M). He was arrested and remanded on June 26. Further investigation is on. Meanwhile, responding to the incident, the IIT (M) stated that an unfortunate incident took place at the IIT Madras campus on June 25, when a contractual employee of a vendor operating on the campus "misbehaved" with a woman student, visiting from other institute. 'The girl raised an alarm and the culprit was held by the institute security and handed over to the local police. IIT (M) has a zero tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and we are committed to provide a safe and secure campus to all,' the institute said in a statement.
