From today (Thursday), members of the public will be able to step aboard the ship to browse its impressive selection of books and enjoy its unique maritime experience. The floating library will be open daily from 1pm to 9pm, except on Mondays when it will be closed for maintenance and housekeeping. Labuan is one of the stops in the Doulos Hope's regional tour, aimed at promoting literacy and cultural exchange through affordable books and onboard community engagement. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for July 10, and the vessel will remain in Labuan waters until July 27. Operated by a charitable organisation, Doulos Hope is crewed by volunteers from around the world and offers thousands of book titles covering a wide range of topics, including education, personal development, family and faith. Families, students and book lovers across Labuan are encouraged to visit the vessel during its stay and take part in the onboard activities. KOTA KINABALU: Fifty students from five secondary schools in Kota Kinabalu took part in a mangrove conservation programme aimed at raising environmental awareness among youth. The programme, themed 'Shaping the Mangrove Protectors of Tomorrow', was organised by Hibiscus Petroleum in collaboration with the Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society at the Kota Kinabalu Ramsar Wetland site on Thursday. Hibiscus Petroleum Sabah's Head of Operations, Edmund Ang, said the initiative reflects the younger generation's growing involvement in safeguarding Sabah's coastal ecosystem. Students also participated in a tree-planting activity and a guided tour on mangrove ecosystems, led by experts from the conservation society. The event marked the first of three planned campaigns involving 15 schools across different districts, with a total of 150 students expected to participate. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Four dead, 38 missing after ferry sinks near Bali
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: Reuters Text Size: Rescuers search for victims after the ferry sank. – AP JAKARTA: Four people died, 38 were missing and 23 survived after a ferry carrying 65 people sank near the Indonesian island of Bali, the country's Search and Rescue agency said on Thursday. The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank almost half an hour after leaving East Java province's Banyuwangi port on its way to Bali late on Wednesday, the agency said on Thursday. The boat was carrying 53 passengers and 12 crew members, as well as 22 vehicles, the agency said. A search for the missing is underway although it is being hampered by strong currents and winds, the agency added. There has been no official statement on the nationalities of the passengers, but a manifest list broadcast by news channel MetroTV indicated there were no foreigners on board. Ferries are a common mode of transport in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, and accidents are common as lax safety standards often allow vessels to be overloaded without adequate life-saving equipment. A small ferry capsized in 2023 near Indonesia's Sulawesi island, killing at least 15 people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
