Samajwadi Party MP: ‘Congress came to us several times on impeaching Justice Varma … tried to tell them it is BJP's move'

Indian Express22-07-2025
Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan talks to The Indian Express about his party's stance on the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma, why they won't support the motion if the Opposition's impeachment motion against Justice Shekhar Yadav is not taken up
Why did SP MPs not sign the notice on Justice Yashwant Varma's removal?
There is no doubt that SP is against corruption. But it was the BJP that first talked about an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma… BJP's objective was not to finish corruption… BJP's objective is to prove itself a champion against corruption. The Opposition parties had given an impeachment motion against Justice Shekhar Yadav (of Allahabad High Court who made a controversial speech at a VHP event last year), which is pending with the Rajya Sabha Chairman… Our stand was that if the government takes up the Opposition's impeachment motion against Justice Shekhar Yadav, then we will support the impeachment motion against Justice Varma. But some of our Opposition parties, in the apprehension that BJP may take a lead on the issue of corruption, moved an impeachment motion against Justice Varma much before the government.
The government should take up the impeachment motion against Justice Yadav with the same sincerity and conviction. Because corruption is nothing in comparison to the communalisation of judicial institutions…
If the impeachment notice against Justice Varma is adopted and voting happens, what will be SP's stand?
We will not support if the impeachment motion is taken up against Justice Varma only. If the government… gives any assurance to take up impeachment motion against Justice Yadav, we will be in support of both motions. A decision will be taken at the time of voting. But when the discussion will happen on Justice Varma, SP will focus on Justice Shekhar Yadav.
Doesn't the Opposition appear divided on the impeachment notice?
You can say the Opposition appears divided. I can say the Opposition appears… to be rallying behind the BJP (on impeachment notice against Justice Varma).
Has SP discussed the matter with Congress or any other Opposition party?
Congress approached the SP several times and said we should move a notice for Justice Varma's impeachment before the BJP moves. Several rounds of discussion happened. We tried to convince them that this is BJP's move… The BJP is not ready to talk about Justice Yadav…
The SP joined other Opposition parties in Parliament on Monday the issue of Pahalgam terror attack. What is the party's demand?
There are two things — Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor. BJP's notice is for a discussion on Operation Sindoor. The Opposition wants a discussion on the Pahalgam attack, which was a security breach… Pahalgam is a failure of the government. Discussion should happen on this matter. Operation Sindoor is an undisputed operation… There should be no debate on it… The BJP wants to take credit for the Army's bravery and success.

Operation Sindoor was ‘declaration of India's ability to stand tall through self-reliance': DRDO chief Samir Kamat

Operation Sindoor was a 'declaration of India's ability to stand tall through self-reliance, strategic foresight and indigenous technological strength,' Samir V Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), said Saturday. Addressing the 14th convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) in Pune, Kamat said, 'Just a few weeks ago, India launched Operation Sindoor. This was a highly coordinated, multidimensional operation that addressed a high-stakes challenge along our western borders.' Without disclosing operational specifics, he said, 'I can share with a sense of pride that the success of Operation Sindoor was not merely defined by the courage and capability of our soldiers in uniform, but also by the technological backbone that supported them with sensors, unmanned platforms, secure communications, AI-based decision support, as well as precision weaponry.' The forces, he said, used indigenous systems during the operation, 'such as Akash short-range surface-to-air missiles, the medium range surface to air missiles, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, the D4 anti-drone system, the airborne early warning and control, the Akashteer system as well as the C4I systems (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence). All of these emerged from our indigenous defence R&D community, and institutions such as DIAT also played a crucial role in their development.' He further said, 'Operation Sindoor was more than a mission… It was also a call to the next generation to keep this momentum going and make India a technology leader in defence technologies.' At the convocation, the Institute awarded degrees to 298 students, including 206 MTech students, 68 MSc and 24 PhD students in various disciplines. A total of 18 gold medals were also awarded to the students this year. Sharad Pawar claims offer of 160 Assembly seats before Maharashtra polls, says he and Rahul Gandhi declined it

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar Saturday said two people had approached him ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, claiming they could guarantee 160 out of 288 seats. Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Pawar said he facilitated a meeting between these people and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, but the two leaders ultimately dismissed the offer, stating, 'This is not our way'. 'We did not give it the attention it perhaps required. But I still remember — before the Assembly elections were announced, two people came to meet me in Delhi. They told me that Maharashtra has 288 Assembly seats, and out of those, they would guarantee us 160 seats. I was surprised. To be clear, even though they claimed such a guarantee, I had no doubts about the Election Commission. But such people do show up, so I ignored them.' 'I arranged their meeting with Rahul Gandhi. They told him whatever they wanted to. However, both Rahul Gandhi and I felt that we should not pay attention to such things. This is not our path. We decided we would go before the people and find ways to earn their support,' Pawar told reporters in Nagpur. Pawar lauded Rahul Gandhi's recent presentation on alleged polling irregularities and criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI) for seeking a separate affidavit from him. 'The Election Commission is an independent body. Rahul Gandhi said he has already taken an oath in Parliament, so there is no need for a separate affidavit. If the Election Commission still insists on such a thing, that is not right. Rahul Gandhi's allegations need to be probed in depth. The truth must come out. My only point is that the objection was regarding the Election Commission. Then why do BJP leaders or the chief minister need to respond? We want an answer from the Election Commission, not from the BJP,' said Pawar. Referring to the recent INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi, Pawar dismissed speculation over Uddhav Thackeray's seating position, comparing it humorously to movie-goers avoiding the front row. 'First, I must say I have been seeing since yesterday that there is politics over where Uddhav Thackeray was seated in Delhi. When you watch a presentation, you don't sit in the first row just as when you go to watch a movie, you don't sit in the first row, you sit further back. Similarly, I, too, was seated at the back. The point is, you don't sit close to the screen; you keep some distance. Unfortunately, politics is being done over where Uddhav Thackeray was seated,' he said. Hours after Pawar's comments, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Opposition has a habit of lying and running away. 'Although Rahul Gandhi has often raised doubts about the EVM machines, Sharad Pawar has never said so. In fact, Sharad Pawar has often taken a clear stand that it is wrong to blame the EVMs. However, now, after Rahul Gandhi's meeting, Sharad Pawar has suddenly started talking about changes in the voting process. This is the result of Rahul Gandhi's meeting,' said Fadnavis. 'No matter how much confusion the Opposition creates, elections are not held anywhere as transparent and free as in India. Those who accuse EVMs and the Election Commission speak in public. But they are not ready to give an affidavit. They say that we have taken an oath in Parliament. But is the oath in Parliament valid in the Supreme Court and the high court? They know that if they are caught lying, criminal action can be taken against them tomorrow. Therefore, these are cowardly people who lie and run away every day,' criticised Fadnavis.

Indian Air Force took down 5 fighter jets and 1 large aircraft during Operation Sindoor: Air Marshal AP Singh

In his first official comments over losses inflicted on Pakistan in Operation Sindoor, Indian Air Force Chief Air Marshal AP Singh on Saturday said the Indian Air Force (IAF) took down five fighter jets and one large aircraft during the May 7 operation. Apart from the aircraft, he added, there are a large number of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones, some of whose missiles had fallen in the Indian territory. He said India recovered them alongside other wreckage which is being studied, 'so we can make out what they did, where they were launched from, what route they followed, what kind of systems they had, what generation they belonged to, what kind of features they had, etc.' He also showed the before and after images of the damage caused in Pakistani territory at Bahawalpur – the headquarters of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). 'There's hardly any collateral (damage) here… The adjacent buildings are fairly intact… Not only did we have satellite pictures, but also from local media, through which we could get inside pictures,' he said. Singh said Indian Air Defence systems have done a wonderful job. 'The S-400 system, which we had recently bought, has been a game-changer. The range of that system has kept their aircraft away from their weapons, like those long-range glide bombs that they have,' he said, adding that they have not been able to use any of those because they have not been able to penetrate the system. The IAF chief also showed that the Shahbaz Jacobabad airfield was one of the major airfields that were attacked. 'Here, there's an F-16 hangar. One half of the hangar is gone. And I'm sure there were some aircraft inside which got damaged there. We were able to get at least two command and control centres, like Murid and Chaklala,' he said. 'At least six radars, some of them big, some of them small…We have an indication of at least one AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) in that AEW&C hangar and a few F-16s, which were under maintenance there… ,' he said.
