Punjab influencer's murder: Two weeks on, whereabouts of 2 accused still unknown
Two weeks after the decomposed body of Ludhiana-based woman social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, alias Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, was found in Bathinda, the whereabouts of the two accused related to the case are still not known to the police. Investigators said on Wednesday that the main accused and conspirator of the alleged targeted killing, Amritpal Singh Mehron, a religious vigilante, fled the country on June 10 without wearing his Nihang attire.
The Bathinda police have named five persons in the killing and assisting Mehron in fleeing the country after the crime. Investigators said that of the five accused, four were Nihangs but the identity of the fifth accused is still a mystery. The police have arrested Mehron's aides Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, both Nihangs, while Mehron remains in hiding in the UAE. Another accused, Ranjit Singh, also a Nihang, from Tarn Taran, is also absconding, while the police is still clueless about his accomplice.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amneet Kondal said a probe confirmed that Mehron was not accompanied by Ranjit when the former flew out of the country. 'Travel data says that Mehron had a travel visa for the UAE and he boarded the flight from Amritsar, where he was not wearing his traditional Nihang attire. A look-out circular (LoC) was issued against Ranjit and there is no input indicating that he has left India. Our teams are raiding different places to nab Ranjit,' she said.
The SSP said Jaspreet and Nimratjit did not divulge anything about the fifth accomplice. 'Ranjit and the unidentified person reached Bathinda to pick up Mehron and drop him at the Amritsar airport to board the flight at 9.15 am on June 10. Ranjit's arrest would lead us to know the fifth accused and coordinated efforts are being made to arrest them,' added the SSP.
Kondal said the district police initiated efforts to extradite Mehron from the UAE on June 20 when a letter was sent to the Bureau of Investigation (BoI) of Punjab Police (HT was the first to report).'The communication was part of the protocol to reach out to Interpol for Mehron's extradition. We have yet to get confirmation if the Interpol has published a notice to locate and detain the accused for deportation to face trial in the murder case,' added the SSP.
Kanchan's murder took place on the night of June 9-10 when Mehron, along with associates Jaspreet and Nimratjit, allegedly strangled Kanchan in her car. They later dumped her decomposing body in the parking lot of Adesh Medical College and Hospital in Bhucho, Bathinda. The body was recovered on June 11 evening.
Police say the murder was motivated by Kanchan's controversial social media posts, which allegedly offended the Sikh community.

'We have hired Mike Andrews. We expect the raw details of information from the black box to come before us at the earliest so that we can decide our next steps along with our lawyer. In India, trials get dragged out for years. We are fighting the case in the US so that a decision is pronounced early,' he said. Prajapati expressed his gratitude towards the Indian government, police, and doctors for their support after the tragedy. 'We believe we will get justice. When the incident happened, the government helped us a lot. The police also helped us. We are thankful to the doctors too, who handed over the bodies to us after a swift DNA test,' he said. Recounting the events leading to his mother's ill-fated journey, Prajapati revealed how her travel plans changed multiple times before she finally boarded the doomed flight. 'I had initially booked a June 9 flight for her, but she had a fast that day. So, I rescheduled it to June 11. Then she told me she didn't want to travel on an odd date. I finally booked her ticket for June 12,' he recalled. On Monday evening, families of the victims held a candlelight vigil to mark two months since the disaster. Mike Andrews, who represents more than 65 victim families, joined the remembrance. 'Today marks the two-month anniversary of this tragedy. It has been a very difficult day for everyone involved. The families organised a candlelight vigil to stand in remembrance. We are thankful and grateful to have been invited… The families are back now, searching for answers,' he told ANI. The Air India flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, killing all people on board - 229 passengers and 12 crew members - as well as 19 people on the ground.

Elderly Sikh man brutally assaulted in LA, suspect in custody
New York, Aug 13 (PTI) An elderly Sikh man was assaulted in Los Angeles and suffered a skull fracture and potential brain trauma, as authorities announced a suspect has been arrested for the attack. Harpal Singh, 70, was assaulted by 'unhoused" man Bo Richard Vitagliano while he was taking his daily walk near the Sikh Gurdwara of Los Angeles on August 4. The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Tuesday that Vitagliano, 44, was arrested on Monday for the 'brutal attack" against Singh. Vitagliano has been booked for assault with a deadly weapon, and his bail was set for USD 1.1 million. Advocacy group The Sikh Coalition said that while the suspect is in custody for the brutal assault on Singh, the police are not investigating the case as a hate crime. It said Singh has sustained very serious injuries during the assault and remains in critical condition. The police said that on August 4, law enforcement officials responded to a radio call of an 'assault with a deadly weapon investigation." Preliminary investigation revealed there was a physical altercation between Singh and Vitagliano, who is an 'unhoused" individual. Witnesses said while they did not see how the altercation began, they heard a loud commotion, then witnessed two men swinging metal objects at each other, the LAPD said. Both individuals were struck and Vitagliano further assaulted Singh while he was reportedly on the ground. When witnesses intervened by yelling at Vitagliano, he rode away on his bicycle. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported Singh to a nearby hospital where he was admitted for a skull fracture and potential brain trauma. Singh continues to be under the care of a physician due to injuries suffered in the altercation. Vitagliano has an extensive criminal record for narcotics, assault with a deadly weapon, and various weapons charges. Based upon the evidence in this matter, police believe the assault was not a hate crime, but instead motivated by a dispute over property belonging to the victim. LAPD said local officers will be conducting extra patrols in the area following this incident and will continue engaging the community to discuss public safety and address any further concerns of the Sikh community. The Sikh Coalition noted that it is 'impossible to completely rule out that this is a hate crime at this stage. The suspect has been in custody for less than 24 hours, and Harpal ji himself remains unconscious and has thus been unable to sit for a full police interview, with professional translation services, separate from a conversation immediately after the attack." 'After such an interview happens, if the LAPD still believes this was not a hate crime, they must publicly clarify how they determined hate was not a factor in this assault," it said. Singh's brother Dr Gurdial Singh Randhawa said he is grateful that the police have arrested a suspect for the horrific assault, but 'we need to better understand this attack and why it is not being considered a hate crime." 'Justice must be served, and our local Sikh community must know that the area around our gurdwara—where we gather to worship, learn, connect, eat, and serve others—is safe for all," he added.
