2% wealth tax would raise more than expanded SST, says ex-MP

PETALING JAYA: A 2% wealth tax would raise around 60% more than the RM5 billion in revenue the government hopes to obtain from its expansion of the sales and service tax (SST), says former Klang MP Charles Santiago. In a series of posts on X today, he commented on the assertion by deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister Fuziah Salleh that the government would become 'very unpopular' if it raised taxes on the top 10% of the nation's richest people and redistributed the wealth to the rest of the population.
Advertisement 'Malaysia's richest 50 hold US$90 billion (RM380.3 billion) in wealth, as per @Forbes. Why tax bananas and oil before mega mansions?' he said. Speaking at the BBC World Questions debate on Tuesday, Fuziah said that while the distribution of wealth should be more equitable and efficient, the government had to tread carefully in doing so. 'We already hear some noises when we talk about targeted petrol subsidies that may exclude the T20. 'Even the 2% dividend (tax) met some resistance,' Malay Mail reported her as saying, in reference to the introduction of a dividend tax on annual dividend incomes exceeding RM100,000 under the 2025 budget. Last year, finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said the expansion of the SST was expected to generate RM51.7 billion in revenue in 2025, an additional revenue of RM5 billion over the previous SST collection forecast of RM46.7 billion. However, Santiago insisted that the matter ultimately boiled down to perspective and priorities. 'If you own RM100 million, a 2% wealth tax is RM2 million. That's one less Ferrari. Or less than your annual interest. But RM2 million could fund 500,000 school meals. This is about priorities,' he said. He also argued that it was wrong to keep taxing consumption and not wealth, saying median wages 'barely keep up with inflation'. '@UnicefMY shows low-income families spend 38% of their income on food. Inequality doesn't just grow, it erodes nations. Time to rebalance,' he said. He suggested that the increased revenue could be used, for example, to install solar panels for low-cost housing. 'This cuts electricity bills, creates income, and feeds clean energy into the grid,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Monitoring of Sabah GLCs must, says Upko
Published on: Friday, June 13, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 13, 2025 Text Size: Dennison added that ongoing financial losses directly impact investor confidence and the direction of state development. Kota Kinabalu: State government-linked companies (GLCs) in Sabah must undergo reform for the benefit of the people and the overall future of the state. The Treasurer-General of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko), Dennison R. Indang, said that GLCs should serve as catalysts for the people's economy – creating job opportunities, empowering local entrepreneurs, and contributing to state revenue. Advertisement However, he said, when governance is driven purely by political interests rather than efficiency, the original mission of these companies is significantly derailed. 'This situation erodes public confidence in the state's management capabilities and undermines our ability to deliver high-impact services and development. 'I welcome the call for Sabah's GLCs to undergo comprehensive and bold reforms. 'The reality is, far too many GLCs have failed to fulfil their original purpose. Not only are they failing to generate profits, but they have also become a financial burden on the state,' he said in a press statement here on Tuesday. Dennison added that ongoing financial losses directly impact investor confidence and the direction of state development. 'I believe it is time for a new approach in the management of Sabah's GLCs. Appointments to the Board of Directors must be based on merit and professionalism, not on who knows who. 'All investments and partnerships must undergo transparent evaluations, with priority given to their impact on the people. 'Underperforming GLCs should be reassessed, restructured, or terminated so that the state's resources can be used more wisely. 'In this regard, I welcome the establishment of the Sabah State GLC Monitoring Committee as announced by Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Julita Majungki,' he said firmly. Dennison, who is also the Upko Kota Kinabalu Division Chief, said this is an important step toward strengthening integrity, transparency, and accountability in GLC governance. He added that GLC reform is not just a matter of administration but also a matter of having the courage to make policy decisions that directly impact the well-being of the people and the strength of the state's economy. 'The people need leaders who not only understand policy issues but are also capable of pushing for structural changes in a bold and decisive manner. 'Upko is committed to being part of the solution. We believe that GLC reform is not an option – it is an urgent necessity. 'And to ensure the success of these changes, Sabah needs a leadership team that truly understands its responsibilities and is ready to carry the mandate,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit rallies against greenback on weak US data
Published on: Friday, June 13, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 13, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8 am, the local unit strengthened to 4.2095/2270 against the greenback, from Thursday's close of 4.2155/2245. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit extended its gains against the US dollar at Friday's open, buoyed by continued weakness in US economic data, an analyst said. At 8 am, the local unit strengthened to 4.2095/2270 against the greenback, from Thursday's close of 4.2155/2245. Advertisement Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.72 per cent to 97.0921, its lowest since March 2022, as data indicated a cooling labour market and moderating inflation trajectory. He noted the core Producer Price Index (PPI) for May rose 3.0 per cent year-on-year, below the consensus estimate of 3.1 per cent. Initial jobless claims also rose to 248,000 last week, higher than the forecast of 242,000. 'Such data are seen as critical in shaping the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) stance ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on June 17 and 18,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam said while the Fed is expected to keep the Federal Funds Rate unchanged at 4.50 per cent, market participants will be watching the central bank's quarterly economic projections closely. 'In March, Fed officials projected the policy rate at 3.9 per cent for 2025, which implies two rate cuts this year. 'On that note, we believe emerging market currencies, including the ringgit, are poised to appreciate,' he said. At the same time, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the euro to 4.8860/9063 from Thursday's close of 4.8765/8869, but weakened vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9412/9539 from 2.9329/9394, and slipped against the British pound to 5.7363/7601 from 5.7213/7335. Against ASEAN currencies, the ringgit was mixed. It edged up against the Philippine peso to 7.54/7.58 from 7.55/7.57 and gained slightly versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/260.3 from 259.5/260.2. However, it eased against the Singapore dollar to 3.2936/3078 from 3.2934/3006, and declined against the Thai baht to 13.0124/0754 from 12.9828/13.0173. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
