Notre Dame's Aamil Wagner chosen as a nominee for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

USA Today16-07-2025
There have been numerous instances during this offseason alone in which Notre Dame football players have given back to the community, and now one particular player is being recognized for his efforts.
Junior offensive lineman Aamil Wagner has been chosen as a nominee for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, an honor that recognizes one's commitment to community service and leadership off the field.
The Ohio native is one of 197 nominees for the honor. The final list for the 2025 Good Works Team will be announced in September and will consist of 22 football student-athletes and one honorary head coach.
In 2024, Fighting Irish linebacker Jack Kiser was selected to the Good Works Team, while Marcus Freeman was named the team's honorary head coach for their efforts in the community.
On the field, Wagner has developed into an anchor on the offensive line at right tackle and will continue to be a key piece to a team looking to return to the College Football Playoff.

World's tallest teen, Florida basketball center Olivier Rioux gives football a try

They say that the sky is the limit when it comes to people pursuing greatness, but for Florida basketball's towering center Olivier Rioux, the higher altitudes are where he reigns. The 7-foot-9-inch native of Canada, who is designated as the world's tallest teenager by the Guinness Book of World Records, still has some work to do when it comes to getting court time for the Gators this coming season. But that did not stop him from taking an opportunity to work out with the football program recently. The team's special teams coaches geared Rioux up and gave him a few snaps during practice, hoping that his height and wingspan could prove to be an effective approach for blocking field goals and extra points. During a booster event on Thursday evening, coach Todd Golden seemed perfectly fine with him getting some reps on the gridiron. "I like the idea," he said. "I give them credit for trying it." However, the experiment was less than successful. Sure, Rioux is tall and long, but he is only able to achieve an 11-inch vertical leap with his 305-pound frame, which just does not cut it for that specific role. "They were a little disappointed," Golden offered. It sounds like he will stick to basketball... at least, for now. Rioux competed on behalf of Team Canada this summer in the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup, helping his team earn a 5-2 record while finishing fifth overall in the standings. In seven games played, the young Gator totaled 11 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and one assist while averaging a little over nine minutes per contest. The redshirt freshman is expected to see some playing time during Florida's defense of its national championship next season, but he will be limited by the team's depth in the front court. With Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh, Micah Handlogten and Reuben Chinyelu all returning, Rioux will most likely be relegated to garbage time. Ben Shelton takes down Francis Tiafoe in DC Open quarter-finals

Ben Shelton continued his dominant run at the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Friday night with a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over Francis Tiafoe, who was the hometown favorite in Washington. Shelton and Tiafoe are no strangers to one another. They played doubles together a few days ago and have now met four times in ATP Tour events. "We know tennis is a long journey. We're going to play each other a bunch of times. Especially, we've already played on the hard courts, we've already played twice at the US Open, and he beat me the most recent time. It's tough not to cheer for a guy like that,' Shelton said. The first set stayed on serve until the 11th game, when Tiafoe broke Shelton to love. The former Florida Gator bounced back immediately, breaking Tiafoe and forcing a tie-break. Shelton used his power forehand to claim the first set, delivering a 144 mph serve in the process. Shelton broke first in the second set at 3-3, and it was cruise control from there. The win puts Shelton ahead, 3-1, in the Head2Head series. Shelton already secured the No. 7 spot on the rankings by making the quarter-finals, but every win gets him closer and closer to No. 6 Novak Djokovic, who many consider to be the greatest of all time. It's a 600-point gap to close, but winning this tournament would cut that number in half. Winning the Washington 500 seems very doable with top-seeded Taylor Fritz falling in the quarters against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Shelton is now the highest-seeded player remaining in the tournament. Still, he will have to get by Davidovich Fokina before facing the winner of the 7-seed Alex de Minaur vs. lucky loser Corentin Moutet. De Minaur and Moutet are scheduled to begin not before 7 p.m. ET, and Shelton vs. Davidovich Fokina will follow — so drink some coffee. Fans can watch the match on the Tennis Channel using cable or streaming, and the TennisTV app is also an option (subscription required).
