Negaraku II Explores Malaysia's Story Through Art In George Town

By Siti Azila Alias GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- As Malaysians proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang ahead of the National Day, the spirit of patriotism, unity and hope for the future is also finding its voice through art. A year after unveiling negaraku, an exhibition honouring the nation's journey from independence to its future possibilites, art collector Bingley Sim and his wife Ima Norbinsha return with negaraku II, a more expansive sequel that goes deeper into the complexities of Malaysian identity. Running throughout the month (until Aug 31) at Hin Bus Depot, Jalan Gurdwara here, negaraku II showcases compelling works from the private collection of Sim, 62, and Ima, 63, two passionate champions of socially conscious Malaysian contemporary art. Curated by Ivan Gabriel, the exhibition features 35 works from the couple's private collection, with some presented as thematic sets, bringing the total number of individual pieces to about 60, divided into six chapters. In an interview with Bernama, Sim explained that the first chapter titled 'Pejuang-Pejuang' (Warriors), begins with a 1511 masterpiece by Edroger Rosili depicting the Portuguese arrival, a reminder of a history Malaysians must not forget, as their ancestors lived under colonial rule for centuries. He said the second chapter 'Malaysia, Truly Asia' takes inspiration from the well-known tourism slogan, highlighting the country's rich cultural diversity while also addressing the underlying challenges that coexist with its beauty. 'Third chapter 'Pendatang?' (Immigrants?) is quite core in this show because this is something very close to curator Ivan. It explores the migrant roots of many Malaysians, in fact, many of our parents or grandparents, in my case, were actually a migrant and became an immigrant from China,' he said. In Chapter 4 titled 'Sama-sama' (Together), Sim pointed out that it celebrates Malaysia's food culture as a unifying bridge between communities, while highlighting historical connections beyond popular eateries.

PENTARAMA MERDEKA@HOHO Brings National Day Spirit Closer To The People

By Maizatul Jamny Muhammad Rosli KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The sight of a brightly decorated double-decker bus weaving through the federal capital last night, blaring patriotic songs and flying the Jalur Gemilang, turned heads as it transformed the city streets into a moving celebration of National Day and Malaysia Day 2025. The unique initiative, known as PENTARAMA MERDEKA@HOHO, is a collaboration between the Information Department (JAPEN) and Elang Wah Sdn Bhd, operator of the KL Hop-On Hop-Off (KL HOHO) service. Now in its second year, the collaboration goes beyond last year's concept by offering a stronger and more impactful programme. Bernama joined the event aboard the decorated bus, which doubled as a mobile stage featuring music, dance, cultural performances and the Jalur Gemilang. The bus made stops at Sungei Wang, River of Life and Pavilion KL. In addition to performances, the mobile stage offered interactive activities such as patriotic quizzes, while Jalur Gemilang flags were distributed to the public at each stop. The programme stood out for its ability to deliver patriotic messages amid the city's bustle without requiring people to gather at a specific venue, creating a fresh and inclusive experience for city dwellers and tourists. R. Thinesh, 25, who watched the show at Sungei Wang, said he was surprised but delighted to see patriotic performances on the streets, describing the effort as creative and impactful. 'I heard music from afar and then saw a bus decorated with Malaysian flags, with people singing and dancing to Merdeka songs. It was exciting because I didn't have to go anywhere else, the performance came to me,' he said.

Celebration of Malaysia's favourite culinary creation

Sunset Terrace is serving a nostalgic journey through Malaysian flavours in the form of the beloved 'nasi lemak'. THIS National Day and Malaysia Day season, diners can enjoy a nostalgic journey through the country's most iconic flavours with a spectacular 'Nasi Lemak Buffet'. Curated by chef Amir Roslie, the buffet at Sunset Terrace, Sunway Resort Hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, highlights the nation's culinary creation with a vibrant display of rice, sambal, sides and heritage hot dishes. Fragrant coconut rice, believed to have originated as far back as 15th century Melaka, takes centre stage. A charming tale surrounds its name – when a daughter accidentally spilled coconut milk into a pot of rice, her mother, Mak, returned home and asked what the delicious aroma was. The daughter replied: 'Nasi le, Mak!', which turned into the moment that may have given rise to the name nasi lemak. This legend is brought to life through Amir's creative interpretations such as Nasi Lemak Hijau Pandan, Nasi Lemak Kuning Royal, Nasi Lemak Bunga Telang and Nasi Lemak Putih, each cooked with distinctive ingredients and presented with flair. Complementing the rice is slow-cooked sambal made from premium chillies, including Sambal Bawang and Sambal Nyonya, alongside a curated showcase of anchovies, from Pangkor's Ikan Bilis Mata Biru to the delicate Ikan Bilis Jepun. Guests can also enjoy a colourful spread of traditional crackers and an array of spiced chicken, beef and fish serunding. The buffet also features rotating selections of hot dishes that highlight the diversity and depth of Malaysian cooking. Highlights include Ayam Goreng Berempah, Cockles Rendang, Chilli Fried Beef Lung, Sambal Sotong, Daging Dendeng and Lamb Rendang. Vegetarian options such as tempeh and Tauhu Goreng Kicap also make an appearance, ensuring there's something for every palate. While nasi lemak remains the star of the show, guests can look forward to a wide selection of international buffet favourites including seafood on ice, salads and sushi. The Nasi Lemak Buffet is on from Aug 22 to Sept 16. It is available for lunch on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, priced at RM188+ per adult and RM94+ per child or senior citizen. The dinner option from Fridays to Sundays and on public holidays is at RM198+ per adult and RM99+ per child or senior citizen. For reservations, call 03-7495 2009, WhatsApp 019-381 5568 or email
