Rajinikanth's ‘Coolie' to challenge Allu Arjun's ‘Pushpa 2' as the biggest premiere in North America

Time of India3 days ago
Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' has premiered in North America with a record-breaking USD 2.9 million, becoming the biggest Tamil film premiere ever in the region. It is now challenging 'Pushpa 2' for the highest premiere day collections for an Indian film. Despite competition from 'War 2', 'Coolie's' success is driven by Rajinikanth's popularity and a star-studded cast.
Rajinikanth
's latest film Coolie is off to a flying start in North America, with premiere show earnings touching an impressive USD 2.9 million as per distributor Prathyangira Cinemas. The figure instantly made Coolie the biggest Tamil film premiere in North American history and placed it 9th among the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time in the region, an extraordinary feat considering these numbers come from just premiere shows.
What's more,Coolie could go one step further and challenge
Allu Arjun
's Pushpa 2 for the record of biggest premiere day collections in North America for an Indian film. Pushpa 2, which released last year had a record-breaking collection of USD 3.34 million from its premiere shows, setting a high bar for every major release since.Pushpa 2 went on to mint over USD 15.26 million by the end of its theatrical run while it's breakeven number was USD 15 million leaving the distributors with very little profit.
Coolie on the other hand will need to cross USD 7.5 million to break even, now the profit of the film is dependent on the upcoming weekend and the strong word of mouth.
Given the pace at which Coolie is selling tickets, trade experts say it's 'easily primed' to surpass that figure. The combination of Rajinikanth's pan-Indian appeal and
Lokesh Kanagaraj
's mass entertainer brand has created intense buzz, translating into strong advance sales across Tamil and Telugu speaking diaspora audiences in the United States and Canada.
However, the film's ultimate tally will depend heavily on show count availability, a factor complicated by its high-profile clash with Aditya Chopra's War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan,
Jr NTR
, and
Kiara Advani
, the action spectacle has also released this weekend, commanding premium screens and a significant share of IMAX and PLF (Premium Large Format) slots. This direct competition means Coolie may have fewer screenings than it would in an open weekend, potentially capping its ceiling despite huge demand.
Even with the clash, Coolie's USD 2.9 million start is nothing short of phenomenal. To put it in perspective, Rajinikanth's 2019 blockbuster Petta earned USD 2.55 million in its entire North American run, while his recent hit Vettaiyan finished at USD 2.83 million and Kamal Haasan's Vikram earned USD 2.84 million, Coolie has essentially matched or surpassed all of them in just its first few hours.
The movie's performance is also a testament to its wide appeal, powered by a star-studded ensemble featuring Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Upendra, and even
Aamir Khan
in a key role. The casting has given Coolie significant traction across South Indian diaspora markets while also drawing attention in Bollywood-leaning territories.

The Hindu Made of Chennai conducts food trail through Burma Nagar

A food trail through Burma Nagar in Ennore was conducted by The Hindu Made of Chennai on Saturday. Around twenty participants joined the trail, curated by culinary consultant Shabnam Banu, who led them through the neighbourhood's signature Burmese-Tamil street food. The walk primarily covered two street-side shops, where participants had dishes such as Atho and Mohinga at a stall run by Taj, a Burmese-Tamil vendor who has been running his shop at the same spot for 40 years. They also tried Naan with Paaya, as well as Burmese drink Molesa at Mahendra Food Stall, which begins serving breakfast from as early as 3:30 a.m. 'We chose Burma Nagar for the food walk because it was trending on social media, but with a lot of misinformation. This walk is not just about eating food but covering the culture through the food walk,' says Ms Shabnam. 'Many Burmese-Tamil families have settled here, and their Atho is far different from what we find elsewhere. From just 11 shops, the area now has 70 Burmese-Tamil food outlets,' she added. Sharanya, a musician who took part in the walk, said she never knew about the Burmese Tamil community in Ennore and was interested in the event for both its history and its food. 'I only knew about the Burmese Tamil restaurants in George Town but not about the community here. I have always enjoyed the walks conducted during Madras Week and this one has been particularly fun,' said Ms. Sharanya. The Hindu Made of Chennai is presented by Casagrand and powered by SRM. Coolie Day 3 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth crime-drama looks to do an excellent Rs 48 crore gross on 1st Saturday BUT...

Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth had yet another excellent day at the India box office, grossing Rs 47-48 crore. These are excellent numbers but the trend is slightly worrisome. The movie opened to collections of Rs 75.50 crore, added Rs 63.50 crore on day 2 (Independence Day holiday) and is likely putting up Rs 47.50 crore on day 3, taking the 3 day cume to Rs 186.50 crore. Going by how it is doing, the Sunday collections are going to drop down to around Rs 40 crore, giving the movie a weekend of a little over Rs 225 crore. The Day Wise India Gross Collections Of Coolie Are As Under Day India Gross Collections 1 Rs 75.50 crore 2 Rs 63.50 crore 3 Rs 47.50 crore Total Rs 186.50 crore Coolie's Rs 47.50 Crore Day 3 Is Excellent But Given How It Started, The Numbers Should Have Been Closer To Rs 60 Crore If the Saturday numbers of Coolie are seen, not taking into consideration the fact that it opened to the numbers it did, they are excellent and not many Tamil movies have really been able to manage it. The collections for the Tamil version of Coolie are on a steep fall. It is the Hindi and Telugu version collections that are sustaining to a degree. After Sunday, it is likely that the drops will be significant even for the Hindi and Telugu version. Regardless, the movie has already punched above its weight for these two versions. The underperformance in the home market will end up being the most talked thing about this Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial. If the trend is to be analysed, it will end up doing lower than what Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly did in Tamil Nadu. Coolie Heads For A Rs 500 Crore Range Worldwide Finish Unless Something Surprising Happens Coolie heads for a near Rs 500 crore global finish, but even that is subject to how it holds. The global weekend of Coolie will be around Rs 375 crore and for it to add less than Rs 125 crore after that will not be seen well. All things said, Coolie will still be among the top 5 highest Kollywood grosser worldwide and that just proves how big Rajinikanth continues to be. He will have 3 films in the top 5 list and what's important to note is that it is with 3 different directors. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
