Torre vs. Baste set for Sunday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum —PNP chief says

GMA Network6 days ago
A boxing showdown between the country's top cop, Police General Nicolas Torre III and acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte will take place this Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.
That's according to Torre himself, as he was asked by reporters on Thursday during his training for the "charity boxing.""
'Kung ready sila sa venue, I can show up. Pero naka-set na actually ang Rizal Memorial Coliseum. A ring has already been set up there para sa Sunday,' Torre said.
This was Torre's response as he was asked about Senator Ping Lacson's social media post about an executive of a resort casino hotel who is supposedly willing to provide a venue for the match.
GMA News Online has reached out to Duterte, but he has yet to reply as of posting time.
Torre, meanwhile, also said there are already "sponsors" for the event.
'Whether he shows up or not, may mga sponsors na may nagsabi na magdo-donate na lang ng mga ayuda sa ating mga kababayan na nasalanta ng bagyo at baha,' Torre said.
(Whether he shows up or not, there are sponsors who have said they will just donate aid to our countrymen affected by the tropical cyclones and flood.)
'Kung wala naman siya ay magdi-distribute na lang kami ng ayuda,' he added.
(If he doesn't show up, we will just distribute assistance.)
In a vlog uploaded on Youtube on Sunday, Duterte mentioned Torre and challenged him for a fistfight.
'Kasi matapang ka lang naman you have the position. Pero kung suntukan tayo alam kong makaya kita. But then you're a coward,' Duterte said.
(You're brave because you have the position. But if we fight, I know I can handle you. But then you're a coward.)
On March 11, Torre led the arrest of the acting mayor's father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, as Philippine authorities assisted Interpol in serving a warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the older Duterte for crimes against humanity in connection with his drug war. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

The Quezon City Regional Trial Court issued warrants of arrest against Cristy Fermin and two other entertainment personalities over Bea Alonzo's libel complaint. According to Glen Juego of Super Radyo DZBB, Presiding Judge Cherry Chiara Hernando found probable cause to put Fermin and her co-hosts Rommel Villamor and Wendell Alvarez on trial. The bail is set at P48,000 each, with the charges stemming from alleged defamatory statements made against Alonzo. In a text message sent to GMA News Online, Fermin said that they are already addressing the matter. "Inaasikaso na namin. Naku, ganun talaga! Kakambal ng trabaho natin ang ganitong kaso. Ilalaban natin ito," she said. In May 2024, Alonzo filed a cyber libel complaint against Fermin, Ogie Diaz, and their co-hosts on their respective programs. Alonzo's complaint affidavit states she was the victim of false, malicious, and damaging information from someone who pretended to be close to her, which was published and discussed on Diaz and Fermin's online shows without any basis. Carpio: SC may still reverse decision on Sara Duterte's impeachment

Retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio said Wednesday that there is still a possibility that the high court will reverse its decision declaring the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte as unconstitutional. Carpio said this, hinging on the plan of the House of Representatives to file a motion for reconsideration on the SC decision as the lower chamber argued that the ruling was based on incorrect findings that contradict official records. 'Theoretically, pwede [it's possible]. I mean, there's no rule or law, constitutional provision that say that they [cannot] correct themselves,' Carpio said at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum when asked of the possibility of the decision getting reversed even as the SC justices voted unanimously on it. According to the former SC associate justice, there had been many instances in the past when the high court 'completely reversed itself.' Meanwhile, Christian Monsod, one of the framers of the 1987 Constitution, said that the SC may 'correct itself on some parts' of their decision. 'It's not yet final, it's only executory but not yet final because the House still has motion for reconsideration. So I would think that the Senate should hold in abeyance any action because it's not yet final,' Carpio explained. 'Normally, you act when it's already final. Because it's not yet final, there's still a chance it could be reversed or changed because there's a motion for reconsideration,' he added. Carpio, however, emphasized that if the decision becomes final, the ruling must be followed because the Supreme Court is the final arbiter 'whether it's correct or not.' Voting 13-0, the Supreme Court earlier declared the articles of impeachment against Duterte as unconstitutional, saying that it was barred by the one-year rule under Article XI Section 3 paragraph 5 of the Constitution. The high court also found that the articles violated Duterte's right to due process. The SC decision is immediately executory but a motion for reconsideration may be filed. The high court also emphasized that it is not absolving Duterte from any of the charges against her, but any subsequent impeachment complaint may only be filed starting February 6, 2026. House of Representatives spokesperson Princess Abante said the lower chamber is preparing to file a motion for reconsideration of the SC decision, noting that upon studying, the House found that the bases for it were alarming. 'Ang Kamara, matapos ang masusing pag-aaral, ay maghahain ng motion for reconsideration dahil ang desisyon na nagsasabing ang Articles of Impeachment na ipinadala sa Senado ay barred or unconstitutional ay nakaangkla sa mga factual premises o findings na mali at salungat sa opisyal na record ng Kamara,' Abante said. (The House, after thorough study, will file a motion for reconsideration because the decision declaring that the Articles of Impeachment transmitted to the Senate are barred or unconstitutional is based on factual premises or findings that are incorrect and contrary to the official records of the House.) Meanwhile, Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero announced Tuesday that the Senate will discuss the SC decision on August 6, 2025, 'in order to afford ample and sufficient time to the members to study the 97-page Supreme Court decision, excluding the concurring and separate opinions filed by five or six additional magistrates of the Supreme Court.'—AOL, GMA Integrated News

Lawyers ask Supreme Court to cite Larry Gadon, others in contempt

Several lawyers, accompanied by supporters of the Duterte family, filed separate petitions asking the Supreme Court (SC) to cite in contempt critics of its ruling that barred the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio filed his petition for indirect contempt against Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation Larry Gadon, while Atty. Mark Tolentino and Rolex Suplico filed a similar petition against political analyst Richard Heydarian and Akbayan Representative Percival Cendaña. Topacio said he filed the petition over Gadon calling the SC a "tuta (lapdog)" of the Dutertes. "I was scandalized to be candid. Sapagkat, bagamat mayroon tayong freedom of expression, and sometimes I also criticize some decisions of the Court, there should be boundaries. Kapag ganoon na pong masyadong vitriolic na… masyadong maangas na. Libelous na po 'yun eh. Hindi po natin maaaring palampasin," Topacio said in an ambush interview. (I was scandalized to be candid. Because, although we have freedom of expression, and sometimes I also criticize some decisions of the Court, there should be boundaries. When it becomes that vitriolic… too arrogant. That's already libelous. We cannot let that pass.) In an interview prior to the fourth State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. last Monday, Gadon slammed the High Court for its decision declaring the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte as unconstitutional and null and void. The SC said the Articles of Impeachment are barred by the one-year rule under Article XI Section 3(5) of the Constitution. Further, the high court also found that the Articles of Impeachment violate due process of law, saying that the draft and its evidence were not made available to Duterte, denying her the opportunity to be heard by the members of the House of Representatives. "'Yun na nga 'yung Senate hearing, 'yun na nga 'yung magbibigay ng due process. Because that is precisely the trial. So anong pinagsasabi ng SC? Talaga kasing maka-Duterte sila… Wag na tayong magpaligoy-ligoy pa. Ang SC, tuta ng mga Duterte," Gadon said. (Exactly, that's the Senate hearing, that's what provides due process. Because that is precisely the trial. So what is the SC saying? They're really pro-Duterte… Let's not beat around the bush. The SC is a lapdog of the Dutertes.) 'Framed as beholden' Meanwhile, in their petition, Tolentino and Suplico noted Heydarian's Facebook post saying Duterte appointed majority of the justices of the SC. They said this "deliberately and maliciously framed the justices as beholden to President Rodrigo Duterte." On the other hand, Cendaña said the SC reduced itself to "being the Supreme Coddler of Sara Duterte." The Akbayan representative stood by his statement, saying moves to cite him in contempt is a Duterte "modus operandi" to silence legitimate criticisms. "In that moment, given the political context, I stand by that very apt description. It is a description of the moment. Sa dulo kasi, huwag nating gamitin itong mga ingay na ito for the Supreme Court to do the right thing, and that is to stand by the Constitution (In the end, this noise should not get in the way of the Supreme Court from doing the right thing, and that is to stand by the Constitution)," Cendaña told reporters. "If this is the consequence of making the Vice President accountable over misuse of public funds and abuse of power, then it's all worth it," Cendaña added. For his part, Gadon said he understood why Topacio filed a contempt case against him for supposedly "telling the truth" about the ruling. He also challenged Topacio to a one-on-one singing competition as a fund raising initiative, similar to the boxing match between Davao City Sebastian "Baste" Duterte and Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Nicolas Torre III. This was rejected by Topacio. Meanwhile, Heydarian said he has "full confidence in our highest court and respected justices not to bother with such frivolity." "While it's true that the majority of our Supreme Court justices were appointed by the former president, it's unfair to make any automatic inferences about their decision-making," he said in a statement, citing his column in a news organization. — with a report from Llanesca T.
