Pirates post third straight shutout against Cardinals
Keller (3-10) struck out seven, walked one and gave up five hits and helped the Pirates record their season-high sixth straight victory. Pittsburgh pitchers have held opponents scoreless for 31 consecutive innings -- their longest such streak since 2015.
After sweeping just one prior series all season, the Pirates won all six games of their homestand against the New York Mets and Cardinals. According to Pittsburgh's home broadcast, it was the first time ever that a team scored 43 or more runs and allowed only four over a six-game span.
It was also the first time the Pirates shut out the Cardinals three consecutive times since Oct. 2-3, 1976.
St. Louis has lost five of its past eight games. All five of those losses have been shutouts. The Cardinals have been held scoreless for 28 consecutive innings.
Tommy Pham and Isiah Kiner-Falefa each had two RBIs to lead the Pirates offensively and each had run-scoring singles to key a four-run bottom of the seventh inning, which broke the game open.
Pham, who also drove in the game's first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single, drove in Nick Gonzales with a one-out single off Cardinals starter Sonny Gray (8-3) in the seventh. Ke'Bryan Hayes singled on the previous at-bat to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
Hayes then scored, along with Pham, on Kiner-Falefa's single.
Gray, who threw a one-hitter in his prior start, allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six in 6 1/3 innings.
The Cardinals mustered six hits overall, including doubles by Brendan Donovan, Jose Fermin and Alec Burleson.
St. Louis loaded the bases in the first inning with two outs when Keller allowed a leadoff double to Donovan, walked Burleson two batters later and hit Lars Nootbaar two batters after that. But Keller ended the threat by striking out Thomas Saggese.

Kyle Higashioka's monster night lifts Rangers past Padres
July 6 - Kyle Higashioka homered and knocked in five runs Saturday night as the visiting Texas Rangers squared their weekend series with the San Diego Padres, taking a 7-4 decision. Higashioka, who belted a career-high 17 homers last year while playing for San Diego, put Texas ahead to stay by lining a two-run shot in the third that was just his second of the year. The catcher added a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly, finishing the game 3-for-3 to up his average to .232. Patrick Corbin (5-7) got the win, working six solid innings and permitting two runs off six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Five relievers combined for the final nine outs, with Shawn Armstrong earning his third save by retiring Xander Bogaerts with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth. Stephen Kolek (3-4) was tagged with the loss after yielding nine hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings. Kolek walked one and fanned two in losing for the fourth time in five decisions. Kolek trailed 1-0 after the first pitch of the game, a fastball right down the middle that Josh Smith drilled an estimated 409 feet over the right field wall for his eighth homer. Jake Cronenworth, who walked off the Rangers Friday with a two-out bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th, gave the Padres a 2-1 lead in the second by ripping a two-run homer to right. It was his eighth of the season. After Higashioka's homer made it 3-2 in the third, Texas tacked on two more two-out runs in the fourth. Jonah Heim lined a double to the right field corner that scored Wyatt Langford, who walked, and Higashioka drove in Heim with a single to left. Higashioka lofted a sacrifice fly off reliever Yuki Matsui in the sixth to up the margin to 6-2. San Diego crawled back to 6-4 in the seventh when Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado delivered sacrifice flies. The Rangers outhit the Padres 11-10, although Luis Arraez went 4-for-5 in a losing effort. --Field Level Media

Luis Castillo, two relievers combine for 2-hitter as M's blank Pirates
July 6 - Luis Castillo pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out a season-high eight batters as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 on Saturday evening. It was the second consecutive shutout for the Mariners, who improved to 4-2 on their seven-game homestand. The Pirates have lost two straight after a six-game winning streak. The Mariners broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning off reliever Caleb Ferguson (2-1). Jorge Polanco led off with a double down the left-field line and took third on Luke Raley's groundout to the right side of the infield. Ferguson then got pinch-hitter Donovan Solano to ground out to drawn-in third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes, keeping Polanco at third, before rookie Ben Williamson hit an RBI double into the gap in right-center. After Cole Young was hit by a pitch and J.P. Crawford walked to load the bases, Isaac Mattson replaced Ferguson and struck out Julio Rodriguez to end the inning. Castillo (5-5) allowed just two hits -- both to leadoff hitter Spencer Horwitz -- and didn't walk a batter. Of his 99 pitches, 67 were strikes. Mariners reliever Matt Brash pitched a scoreless eighth despite a one-out walk and Andres Munoz struck out two in the ninth for his 20th save of the season. Castillo, a right-hander, retired the first nine batters he faced before Horwitz lined a single to right field leading off the fourth. Castillo then struck out Andrew McCutchen and Brian Reynolds before getting Nick Gonzales to ground out to second to end the inning. Horwitz singled to right with two outs in the sixth before McCutchen lined out to left. McCutchen hit a deep drive to center in the first inning, but Rodriguez made a leaping catch before crashing into the wall. Pirates starter Mike Burrows stranded seven runners over five scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed three hits, walked four and fanned six. Seattle's Cal Raleigh, who leads the major leagues with 35 home runs, was walked three times, once intentionally. Raleigh struck out in his other plate appearance. --Field Level Media

Lenyn Sosa's big night powers White Sox over Rockies
July 6 - Lenyn Sosa homered, finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four runs, Michael A. Taylor also went deep and doubled and the Chicago White Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 10-3 in Denver on Saturday night. Highly touted prospect Colson Montgomery had three hits, including his first in the majors after debuting Friday. Mike Tauchman also had three hits and Brooks Baldwin contributed two hits for Chicago. White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon (3-7) allowed two runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to earn his first victory since May 2. There was a moment of silence before the game for former White Sox pitcher Bobby Jenks, who passed away Friday. Brenton Doyle homered, Tyler Freeman had three hits to extend his on-base streak to 20 games and Yanquiel Fernandez had two hits for Colorado. German Marquez (3-10) allowed six runs on 11 hits in six innings. Both teams jumped on the starters in the first inning. Sosa and Baldwin doubled around a flyout, then Montgomery tripled to right-center field for his first career hit and RBI, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead. The Rockies responded in the bottom of the frame. Freeman led off with a single, Goodman doubled and Beck singled to bring home both runners. Cannon retired Thairo Estrada on a popout and Mickey Moniak hit into an inning-ending double play. The White Sox went back in front in the second on Tauchman's RBI single and Sosa's two-run homer to make it 5-2. It was Sosa's seventh of the season. Chicago added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Josh Rojas before the Rockies missed two chances for big innings. They had runners on second and third with no outs in the fifth and didn't score, then loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and again failed to cash in. The White Sox expanded the lead in the eighth on Sosa's two-run single. Doyle belted a pinch-hit homer to open the bottom of the inning, his seventh. Taylor's two-run homer in the ninth, his fifth of the season, capped the scoring. --Field Level Media
