Stock markets are ignoring the war as they wait for the Fed
Israel's air war on Iran entered its fourth day and the price of oil went up again, but the markets appear to be shrugging off the conflict. S&P 500 futures inched up this morning following gains in Europe and Asia.
Investors appear to be positioning for a classic 'buy the rumor, sell the news' event in front of the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate decision on Wednesday. The Fed is expected to leave rates where they are, so don't be surprised if you see a moderate amount of profit-taking if that decision is confirmed.
The stock markets also seem to be unbothered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East even though the VIX volatility index is sharply up.
Deutsche Bank's Henry Allen put it best in a note to clients sent this morning: 'Geopolitics doesn't normally matter much for long-run market performance. This is a pretty consistent pattern, including over the last two years with the Middle East. For instance, there was a brief risk-off move in April 2024 after Iran's attack on Israel, but markets quickly recovered. Then in October 2024, further Iranian strikes led to an oil price spike, but when Israel's response was more limited than many anticipated, prices fell back again. This week's events have clearly been much bigger than 2024. But apart from commodities and Middle Eastern equities, the wider market impact has been limited. In fact, the MSCI World index closed just over -1% beneath its record on Thursday.'
UBS's Paul Donovan concurred: 'The ongoing exchange of missile strikes between Iran and Israel this weekend has not had a major impact on financial markets. … Further market moves would be justified only if there were expectations of even more disruption to energy supplies or shipping lanes,' he said this morning.
Goldman Sachs's Jan Hatzius and his team predict the Fed will remain on hold. Inflation and economic growth both appear to be moderate, so it's not clear whether the Fed needs to intervene by moving the interest-rate needle either way, they told clients. 'The FOMC will likely reiterate that it plans to remain on hold until it has further clarity and downplay its longer-term projections as highly contingent on a still very uncertain economic and policy outlook,' they wrote.
Here's a snapshot of the action this morning prior to the opening bell in New York:
The VIX fear index rose 14% today.
U.S. crude oil rose 1.23% to $73.88 a barrel, after rising more than 7% last week.
S&P 500 futures were up 0.51% this morning despite turmoil in the oil markets.
The S&P 500 closed down 1.13% on Friday, at 5,976.
Bitcoin is sitting above $107K.
Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 1.26%.
India's Nifty 50 rose 0.9%.
China's Composite rose 0.35%.
Stoxx Europe 600 was up 0.35% in early trading.

Janus Henderson: Market Mayhem Opens New ETF Entry Points
Market volatility in 2025 has created entry points for exchange-traded fund investors as trade tensions and global uncertainty drive down stock and bond prices. The first half of this year saw the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 fall 24% from its peak while the S&P 500 dropped 19%, creating opportunities for investors who had been waiting for better entry points, according to Janus Henderson Investors's recent mid-year outlook. These temporary declines allowed investors to purchase quality companies at reduced prices. The market stress stems from concerns about new tariffs and shifting global politics, which continue to create uncertainty, according to the report. While most investors dislike volatility, these price swings actually create opportunities for fund managers to find undervalued investments. The investment firm's analysis shows that major economic changes could benefit the types of investments that have been overlooked, while a handful of large technology stocks dominated returns, creating opportunities for more diversified ETF strategies. This year marks a shift away from the mega-cap stocks that led markets for years, the outlook found. Half of all S&P 500 companies now outperform the index over the calendar year, up from 40% in recent years. This broadening gives active ETF managers more opportunities to identify winners and losers. Small-cap ETFs look particularly appealing after declining in the recent selloff, which created entry points into quality smaller firms at discounted valuations, according to the analysis. These funds have twice the exposure to industrial and materials companies compared to large-cap funds, sectors that could benefit as companies relocate production. International ETFs are also attracting investor interest, with European and emerging markets stocks trading at lower valuations compared to U.S. shares, the report notes. Historical data show U.S. and foreign stocks alternate leadership about every eight years, and U.S. stocks have led for 14 consecutive years. Corporate bond markets experienced dramatic swings this year, with investment-grade company debt starting at tight pricing before spreads widened and then narrowed again, according to Janus Henderson's data. These moves pushed more investors toward bond ETFs that diversify across different debt types rather than focusing on one sector, the firm noted. The multi-sector category has become one of the fastest-growing areas in fixed income as managers adapt to changing market conditions. Bond ETFs focused on asset-backed debt demonstrated defensive characteristics during the recent stock market decline, posting small gains or flat returns while the S&P 500 fell nearly 19% from its February high, the analysis found. These specialized debt funds have outperformed corporate bonds during the five most recent market corrections, with only Treasury bonds performing better. The report indicates volatility will continue creating opportunities for ETF investors who remain selective in both U.S. and international markets as policy uncertainty persists through the remainder of | © Copyright 2025 All rights reserved Sign in to access your portfolio

Markets Drop on Geopolitical Concerns, Weaker Data
Tuesday, June 17, 2025Market indexes finished today near session lows, after fighting their way back toward break-even by late morning. President Trump, fresh from exiting the G7 summit in Banff yesterday, has seemed to amplify rhetoric about a potential U.S. strike on targets in Iran, which would expand the conflict from one concerning Israel and Iran a result, energy was the only sector to finish the trading day in positive territory, up +4% on WTI to the highest levels of oil prices since mid-January: $74.89 per barrel, +3% on Brent crude to $72 per barrel. Solar companies took it on the chin today, as the Big Beautiful Bill passing through Congress has removed all assistance to domestic solar power Dow closed down -299 points today, -0.70%, and it was the best of the bunch. The S&P 500 found itself back below 6K again today, -50 points or -0.84%. The Nasdaq slipped -0.91%, as all Mag 7 stocks closed lower today, and the small-cap Russell 2000 took up the rear today, -0.97%. Minutes before this morning's opening bell, we got monthly manufacturing data by way of Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization, both for May. The headline on Industrial Production reached -0.2%, below the -0.1% expected and the upwardly revised +0.1% from the previous month. Year over year, this print dwindled to +0.6%, less than half the prior month's read of +1.4%.Capacity Utilization, monitoring whether manufacturing is up near its full potential, struck the lowest level since November of last year: 77.4%. This was the third-straight monthly drop, from February's 12-month high 78.2%. April's unrevised 77.7% was where this month's consensus estimate was at. Current capacity utilization is -2.2% below the long-run average (from between 1972 and 2024). These are mildly disappointing numbers, demonstrating that our still-murky tariff policy has not yet firmed domestic manufacturing data, at least according to these metrics. But we'd consider ourselves still range-bound at current levels; though slightly off expectations, we do not see these data points falling off a table. April Business Inventories came in as expected at 'unched' (0.0%), below the +0.1% from the prior month and also the third-straight lower monthly print. It's also the third time in the past 12 months we've seen a 0% read on inventories, but keep in mind: these are April figures, with the report coming from within the same general time period as the initial 'Liberation Day' tariffs. We'll get a better picture on these levels when we see the post-tariff months Confidence for June also came out this morning after the normal trading day began. Its headline was a disappointing 32, the lowest level we've seen since December of 2022, below the 35 anticipated and 34 reported the previous month. Over the past two years, as mortgage rates have climbed and remained at multi-year highs, we've seen this survey reach lower highs and lower lows. Once the Fed starts lowering rates again, perhaps we'll see a change here. Continuing with housing data, ahead of Wednesday's open we'll see Housing Starts and Building Permits for May. No major changes are expected on either metric: Housing Starts are expected to tick down to 1.35 million seasonally adjusted, annualized units from 1.36 million in April. Permits look to tick up to 1.42 million from 1.41 million the prior month. Both are at historically cool levels, again owing to high mortgage rates keeping housing relatively with Thursday of this week a market holiday in observance of Juneteenth, Weekly Jobless Claims will be out a day early. Initial Jobless Claims are anticipated to come down slightly from the multi-month high 248K reported last week to around 246K. Continuing Claims last week shot up to their highest level since November of 2021 to 1.96 million. We may expect a downward revision here, as we've seen in weeks past. That said, we're on a three-week streak with longer-term claims above 1.9 the June Fed meeting will be its fourth in a row without making a move on interest rates. There is a near-100% certainty the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will keep the 4.25-4.50% range we've seen since December. Profit-Efficient Top Stocks to Buy Now
The bulls have held their ground in June after the furious rally off the stock market's April lows. It's difficult to know what, if anything, will shake the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 out of their recent holding patterns until the start of the second quarter earnings season in the middle of July. Thankfully, the bullish backdrop appears to remain intact as long as trade war progress continues, inflation remains in check, and corporate earnings grow. The last several months also highlight why investors must stay constantly exposed to the market and continue buying stocks even if broader sentiment turns bearish. A good starting point for investors looking to buy stocks in June is to find companies that boast improving earnings outlooks to help earn a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) that are also efficiently generating profits. Return on Equity or ROE helps investors understand if a firm's executives are creating assets with investors' cash or burning it. ROE shows a company's ability to turn assets into profits. Put another way, this vital metric measures the profits made for each dollar of shareholder equity. ROE is calculated as net income / shareholder's equity. For example: if $0.10 of assets are created for each $1 of shareholder equity that would equal a ROE of 10%. Overall, Return on Equity is a great item to use regardless of what type of investor you are since it provides insight into management's ability to create value and keep costs under control. Plus, if ROE slips, it can alert us to potential problems. With all that said, let's take a look at this screen's parameters and see the companies proving they can return value to shareholders instead of churning through their cash… • Zacks Rank equal to 1 The Zacks Rank looks at upward earnings estimate revisions, among other metrics, in order to find companies that are projected to see their earnings get stronger. In fact, beginning with a Zacks Rank #1 can be a great starting point because it boasts an average annual return of over 25% per year during the last 30 years. • Price greater than or equal to 5 Today we ruled out any stocks that are trading for less than $5 a share because they can be more volatile and speculative. • Price/Sales Ratio less than or equal to 1 On top of that, we are looking for a low price to sales ratio. Today we went with 1 or below as this range is usually thought to provide better value since investors pay less for each unit of sales. • % (Broker) Rating Strong Buy equal to 100 (%) In this screen, we decided to go with companies that brokers are fully on board with since ratings are typically skewed strongly toward 'buy' and 'strong buy.' • ROE greater than or equal to 10% Lastly, but most importantly for today's screen, we got rid of any companies with Return on Equity of less than 10 because the median ROE value for all of the stocks in the Zacks Universe is under 10. Here is one of the seven stocks that made it through today's screen… Marubeni (MARUY) is a Japanese trading and investment conglomerate. MARUY, which trades OTC in the U.S., imports, exports, and trades a wide range of products, including food, chemicals, energy, metals, and machinery, across global markets. The company also invests in various industries, including real estate, power generation, and infrastructure projects. Additionally, Marubeni provides services such as finance, logistics, and resource development, operating through a vast network in nearly 70 countries. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research MARUY stock has ripped 250% higher in the past 10 years, blowing away the Zacks Conglomerates sector's sideways movement and the S&P 500's 200% climb. The stock recently hit all-time highs, and it's attempting to break meaningfully above a trading range it's been stuck in for several years. Despite its outperformance and charge to record highs, Marubeni trades at a 35% discount to its sector and 11% below its highs at 10.6X forward earnings. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Marubeni's ROE of 13.5% crushes its highly-ranked industry's 3.13% average. On top of that, its 2.71% dividend yield is a great bonus for a stock that has easily beaten the benchmark over the last decade.
