Private-hire group urges Grab to delay bonus revamp, over fears that drivers' earnings will be hurt
The call, made on Monday (Jun 23), comes just over a week before the ride-hailing platform intends to roll out its revised incentive structure, which aims to reward consistent drivers.
In a Facebook post, NPHVA requested that Grab delay the implementation of the change 'for further deliberation'.
'We are particularly concerned about the impact on drivers completing 300 to 499 trips monthly, who make up a significant portion of full-time drivers and will be most affected by the reduction of the monthly streak bonus,' said the association.
Under the current Grab Streak Bonus framework, private-hire drivers in the lowest tier of Grab's four-level rewards system can earn a S$30 cash bonus, along with 8 per cent of their monthly nett earnings, if they make 300 to 499 trips a month.
Drivers can level up by maintaining a minimum of 300 rides for each successive month. Incentives increase accordingly: S$80 and a 10 per cent bonus under Level 2, and S$100 with a 13 per cent bonus under Level 3.

The maximum bonus under the current scheme is 21 per cent, awarded to Diamond Circle drivers who complete more than 701 rides a month.
However, this is set to change from Jul 1. The updated scheme has lower overall payouts for drivers who complete 300 to 499 trips, and a new feature where drivers can pre-book time slots to earn more.
The changes
Drivers told The Business Times they were only informed of the impending changes on Jun 20, via an in-app notification.
In the message, seen by BT, Grab said it was 'enhancing our incentive programme to make it more accessible and inclusive', with a new feature called Streak Zones.
Under the revised scheme, renamed Grab Monthly Bonus, overall incentive payouts are broadly reduced.
Top-tier Diamond drivers will still be able to earn up to 21 per cent in bonuses, now by completing 651 rides instead of 701.
But drivers in the 300 to 499 ride range will see lower payouts: 8 per cent (Level 1), 7 per cent (Level 2), and 10 per cent (Level 3).
They will also get lower cash bonuses: no payout for Level 1, S$30 for Level 2, and S$50 for Level 3, compared to the current maximum of S$100.
Drivers can earn more through the new Streak Zones feature. These are two-hour time slots that drivers must pre-book to qualify for a 5 per cent cashback on fares earned during the period.
Drivers who complete a target number of Streak Zones within a designated timeframe may also receive an extra cash bonus of between S$25 and S$68.
A risk to earnings
NPHVA advisor Yeo Wan Ling made the same post as the association on Facebook, raising the worry that earnings could fall for the 'majority of our average drivers'.
She also raised concerns over the availability and allocation of Streak Zones slots as 'there is no assurance that sufficient slots will be available' for all drivers who wish to participate.
It is hard for drivers to work out whether they will be better off compared to the previous structure, she added. 'Drivers need to be able to formulate the best strategy for their daily earnings, but these changes make earnings less predictable.'
NPHVA continues to call 'for more meaningful consultation' with the union before Grab rolls out changes that affect driver earnings — in line with its previous calls for proper engagement on policies that impact drivers' livelihoods.
Yeo added that all Grab drivers are welcome to join NPHVA's upcoming 'Grab a Drink' session on Jun 26 to discuss how the new scheme could affect their earnings.
The Business Times has contacted Grab for comment on NPHVA's call to delay the rollout.

Hyflux's ex-communications head says she was not told to hide information in shareholder engagements
[SINGAPORE] The former head of corporate communications and investor relations at Hyflux who took the stand on Wednesday (Aug 20) said she was not told to hide any information from the investing public in engagement events. Winnifred Heap, under cross-examination by Senior Counsel Davinder Singh, said it was the standard and the norm in Hyflux to be upfront, and to maintain integrity in the information provided in presentations and her answers to questions from the investing public. She was on the stand on Day 5 of the hearing against a group of Hyflux's senior executives on whose watch the now-defunct company allegedly withheld material information on the Tuaspring project to the Singapore Exchange. They are contesting the charges related to the alleged failure to disclose the information. Hyflux is alleged, for instance, to have failed to say that it was entering the power-generation business for the first time, and that the Tuaspring project would draw the bulk of its top line from the sale of electricity. Singh is representing Olivia Lum, the founder of the water-treatment company and its former chief executive. Also facing one or more charges are the company's former chief financial officer Cho Wee Peng and four independent directors Teo Kiang Kok, Gay Chee Cheong, Christopher Murugasu and Lee Joo Hai. During her testimony, Heap was referred to Hyflux's investor relations plan, under which she arranged for international roadshows for Lum to meet shareholders. 'In fact you wouldn't agree even if you were told to do so?' asked Singh. 'Yes,' she responded, and made the point that it was the standard and norm to be upfront about the information. She also concurred that the risk management committee's positioning of Hyflux as a growth company – by disclosing the new orders that Hyflux had received – was done in good faith and in the interests of shareholders and stakeholders. Heap was also taken through presentations she had made on the feedback from the investing community, and her recommendations for investor relations; Singh pointed out that the board and the management were relying on her material. Singh suggested that one of her recommendations had been to emphasise Hyflux's organic growth into an integrated water-solutions provider and its core competitive advantages, as a way to address shareholders' concerns that Hyflux had been re-rated from being a growth company to a utility player. She agreed with his interpretation. He also got her to agree that it was important for everyone in Hyflux to be 'on the same page' to ensure consistency in the messaging to the market. He also highlighted to her that her investor relations plan for Hyflux in 2011 had listed 'desalination and wastewater recycling' as the key segments. Singh cited the draft for the Mar 7, 2011 announcement of Hyflux being named the preferred bidder for the Tuaspring project, and accused her of failing to check with her then-colleague Camille Hurn – the senior vice-president of energy and infrastructure development – about the edits made to the draft. Hurn had not been sure if it was necessary to go into detail about Hyflux's energy-retailing arm, so had deleted that sentence. Singh said to Heap: 'Here was a senior-management person raising a concern which possibly could have been related to utilities and the IR (investor relations) strategy, (and yet) you did nothing to try and understand?' Heap answered: 'As far as I can remember, yes.' She will continue to be cross-examined on Thursday.

Grab blames 'system error' for very high prices on app, some above S$1,000
SINGAPORE: Riding-hailing platform Grab has blamed a "system error" for unusually high prices wrongly displayed on its app, some of them above S$1,000 (US$778), on Wednesday (Aug 20). The glitch was reported by some users around noon. Users in both Singapore and Malaysia reported these sky-high fares appearing on Grab's app and some users were affected by the errors, even with Grab's safeguards preventing most bookings with incorrect charges from going through Affected users of these prices have already had their refunds processed as of 9pm, Grab said in a statement on Wednesday night. It was not clear earlier if any payments at that price point were charged to any riders. Grab said the system error was an unwelcome surprise due to a misconfigured fee, which it corrected within 20 minutes. "We are doing everything to learn from this so it doesn't happen again," Grab said. In an earlier response to queries from CNA, Grab said its app was functioning as usual after the issue was resolved.

Beng Kuang expands into chemical cleaning in oil and gas industry
[SINGAPORE] Beng Kuang Marine has formed a new business for specialised industrial chemical cleaning, the company said in a bourse filing on Wednesday (Aug 20). The new business, called Clean Concept Works, will focus on chemical cleaning and hot oil flushing services. These processes are essential in the pre-commissioning and maintenance of floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs). This ensures that vital fluid systems of the vessels – including piping, hydraulics and lubrication circuits – operate 'seamlessly within the demanding offshore environment of FPSOs', said Beng Kuang. The formation of Clean Concept Works reflects Beng Kuang's commitment to identify 'growth-oriented opportunities' in the oil and gas industry, said the group's chief executive Yong Jiunn Run. Restructuring and rebranding Separately, Beng Kuang has also conducted an internal restructuring and rebranding exercise to streamline onshore and offshore activities within its infrastructure engineering division. The division specialises in asset integrity solutions for floating assets in the oil and gas industry, such as FPSOs and floating storage and offloading vessels. The streamlining follows other moves Beng Kuang has undertaken to pivot to an asset-light model , following a strategic review in 2021. The company shuttered its ship chartering, hardware distribution and bottled water supply businesses, while focusing on infrastructure engineering and corrosion prevention. As Yong told The Business Times last year: 'We have been hard hit by the oil and gas downturn – at that time we were straddling two warehouses, vessels, a yard in Batam… when you are asset light, in a downturn you can walk away very quickly.' Beng Kuang shares ended Wednesday at S$0.24, down S$0.01 or 4 per cent, before the announcement.
