Abandoned PS building turned into edu centre in J'khand cybercrime hotspot
Equipped with Wi-Fi, a projector, and other facilities, the centre was opened at the old police station building in Karmatand, approximately 220 km from the state's capital Ranchi, a police official said.
"After constructing a new police station, the old PS building in Karmatand was lying abandoned. We decided to renovate it into a hi-tech coaching-cum-guidance centre and library with modern facilities, like Wi-Fi and a projector, to support students preparing for competitive examinations," Jamtara Superintendent of Police Dr Ehtesham Waquarib told PTI.
He claimed that it was the first police station building converted into an educational centre.
Karmatand, the workplace of social reformer and strong supporter of women's education Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, has been one of the worst-affected cybercrime blocks, he said.
Vidyasagar spent 18 years of his life in Karmatand. Now, the government is putting all its efforts into reclaiming the past glory of the area, the official said.
Karmatand has many meritorious students who could excel in competitive examinations if provided with proper facilities, the SP said.
"The coaching-cum-guidance centre is one such initiative. We will strive to provide guidance to students on a weekly and monthly basis, with sessions conducted by teachers for various competitive examinations," he said.
Sandeep Kumar, an arts graduate preparing for competitive examinations, expressed hope that the coaching-cum-guidance centre would play a significant role in shaping students' futures.
The Jamtara administration had initiated a 'library movement' around four years ago.
It started transforming abandoned or dilapidated government buildings into community libraries across 118 panchayats in the district in a bid to engage youths in various educational activities, another official said.
In 2022, a joint campaign called "Police ki Pathshala" was initiated by the police and district administration surrounding these libraries, aiming to raise awareness among youths about the ill effects of phishing and involving them in developmental activities.

Four killed, 11 injured as mini bus collides with truck in MP's Shivpuri
Around 5 am, a mini bus carrying a Gujarat music troupe crashed on NH-46, 30 km from the district HQ, while returning from a programme at Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi Press Trust of India Shivpuri Four persons were killed and 11 others injured after the mini bus they were travelling in collided with a small truck on a highway in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district on Saturday, police said. The accident occurred around 5 am on National Highway 46, around 30 km from the district headquarters, when the mini bus carrying a Gujarat-based music troupe was returning from a programme at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Survaya police station house officer (SHO) Arvind Chari told PTI. He said the bus driver lost control of the wheel, entered the wrong lane and collided with a small truck. The deceased included Hardik Dave (37), a singer in the music troupe, Raja Thakur (28), Ankit Thakur (17) and Rajendra Solanki (47), all members of the band, the SHO said. He said the injured persons have been admitted to hospitals. A preliminary probe suggests that the driver of the mini bus with 17 people onboard might have dozed off at the wheel, Chari said, adding that further investigation is underway. Mumbai businessman loses Rs 5.24 cr in investment scam; four held
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Mumbai, Aug 16 (PTI) Four cyber fraudsters have been arrested for allegedly duping a businessman from Mumbai of Rs 5.24 crore by posing as executives of a Dubai-based investment company, police said on Saturday. The fraud came to light after the accused themselves invited the victim to Dubai, where he found that the company does not exist, an official said. A probe has revealed that the accused, who were recently apprehended from different parts of the country, had used the same modus operandi to cheat people of more than Rs 65 crore in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Kerala, an official said. Three of the accused have been identified as R. Menon (35), Manikandan (32) and H. Pandi, he said. The official said that in October last year, a 65-year-old businessman from the western suburbs received a call from one of the accused, who posed as an employee of a Dubai-based investment company. The caller offered him attractive returns on investment in the company, he said. As the businessman showed interest in investing, the caller introduced him to the firm's director, who offered him 10 per cent returns per month and shares of the same value of the company, the official said. He said that the complainant then deposited money in November and noticed that the bank account used for the transaction was a personal account. On inquiry, the firm's director claimed that the account belonged to an employee and that the sum would be transferred to the company, the official said. In March, the accused invited the complainant for a visit to Dubai, where he found that the firm, in which he had invested Rs 5.24 crore over four months, did not exist. The official said when the businessman tried to contact the firm's owner, he was told that the latter was in the US, and when he demanded the return of his investment, the accused allegedly sent him fake cheques, demand drafts and other documents.
