Sale of scheduled drugs through online portal, IndiaMART, curbed: T.N. police
The illegal sale of scheduled drugs through a leading online portal has been curbed after stringent action was taken, the Tamil Nadu police said.
Last April, as part of the drive against narcotics and other banned substances, Kancheepuram police had issued notices to IndiaMART InterMESH Limited, an online portal, and its directors for having facilitated many youth across the State to buy scheduled drugs illegally.
This follows the arrest of at least 10 youth who procured the scheduled drugs through the portal and the seizure of more than 10,000 tablets in Sriperumbudur and Oragadam in Kancheepuram district. They had procured the drugs without prescription from medical shops in other States, and sold them in Tamil Nadu.
The police said IndiaMART was being used by thousands of youths across the country to procure scheduled drugs, which are otherwisenot allowed to be sold without proper medical advice.
Notices were issued under Section 35 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to the directors to appear before the Kancheepuram police.
Asra Garg, Inspector-General of Police, North, said, 'When their senior representative met us recently, we told them categorically that their portal was being used by gullible youth in Tamil Nadu and other States for the procurement of scheduled drugs, and that something must be done in public interest.'
K. Shanmugam, Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram District, said the pharmaceutical shops from other States, which were hosted on IndiaMART platform, contacted youth from Tamil Nadu, who searched for the drugs, through WhatsApp/Instagram. They then sold them at prices several times the MRP. They delivered the supplies through courier companies by providing fake addresses to hide the recipients' identities.
Shreya Gupta, Superintendent of Police, Tirupattur District, who was a part of this investigation, said: 'IndiaMART was being misused by some greedy pharma shops in other States, who used it against the youth in Tamil Nadu. A couple of months ago, a youth in north Chennai died after injecting a drug purchased through the platform.
Mr. Garg said, 'IndiaMART understood the issue and sent us an official email, confirming that they have completely banned around 100 such drugs from their platform. No illegal sale of drugs through their portal has been reported in the recent days, which is a welcome step and a milestone in our fight against drugs/narcotics.'

Assam CM orders ‘shoot-at-sight' after beef incident sparks communal tension in Dhubri
Guwahati: Assam Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that 38 people have been arrested in connection with a beef incident in Dhubri. The chief minister visited Dhubri on Friday and reviewed the law-and-order situation of the district. The government has brought Senior Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi Leena Doley as the Senior Superintendent of Police Dhubri. The Dhubri town in Assam witnessed tension since last one week after a prohibited meat and a severed cow head was recovered from a Hanuman temple in the town. The Chief Minister visited the town and assessed the on-the ground situation holding a high-level meeting in Dhubri with DGP Harmeet Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tiwari, and other senior officials of the state administration. Sarma also visited the temple site and interacted with members of the temple committee and local residents. He also inspected the temple and its surrounding areas and took stock of the deployment of security personnel. He also assured government assistance for the development of the temple. He also emphasized the need to identify those responsible for orchestrating the unrest. The Chief Minister firmly stated that no individual or group would be allowed to weaponize the incident involving the prohibited meat to create social discord. Following the outcome of the meeting, the Chief Minister ordered the deployment of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) along with additional security forces in Dhubri to help normalize the situation. The chief minister further added that a Bangladesh backed organization Nobin Bangla has also done postering in Dhubri demanding inclusion of Dhubri district in Bangladesh. He said that these postering indicates that a communal force backed by Bangladesh is active in Dhubri and they are working to destabilize Dhubri. On June 9, the Dhubri district administration-imposed prohibition under BNSS 2023 in Dhubri town following the likelihood of breach of peace and public tranquillity in areas falling under Dhubri police station due to communal tension. The area witnessed tension following recovery of banned meat including a severed cow head from the premises of a Hanuman temple in the town's Ward no 3.

Gujarat teen shot video to show friends planes flying overhead — the crash left him traumatised
Standing on the terrace of a three-storey building where his father stayed, Aryan Asari watched with amazement as the planes flew by overhead, seemingly within touching distance. Visiting his father in Ahmedabad's Laxminagar area, close to the airport, the Class 12 student decided to shoot a video of one of these planes and send it to his friends back home in a village in Aravalli district. It was this very video — showing the Air India plane struggling to stay in the air and eventually crashing in a massive fireball — that would go viral globally, becoming the subject of analysis by everyone from crash experts to police. Aryan, however, found himself traumatised and struggling to sleep at night. On Saturday, police took him away from the Ahmedabad house, both to seek details about the video and keep him out of the media spotlight. Earlier in the day, Aryan told a local channel that he had shared the video with his father as well as on his Instagram account as a story. He said he was too scared to ever step foot on an airplane ever again. Raj Singh, 16, who was with Aryan when he shot the video, said that this was the first time the boy and his sister were visiting the rented apartment where their father, a retired army officer who now worked as a metro supervisor, had been staying for the past six months. 'He came around noon and was amazed when he saw planes fly so close overhead as the area is in the flight path. The planes fly so close, one almost feels that one can touch it. I was also standing on the terrace and we got talking. He said he wanted to show his friends how close he was to the planes and started shooting them on his phone,' Raj, who resides in the same building, told The Indian Express. 'As soon as the Air India flight came, he started shooting it when the plane started going down. He asked me why it went down and assumed it would land. However, when we saw the ball of fire, he rushed back to his room. He did not go to the spot where the plane crashed, something most of us did,' said Raj. Aryan later sent the video to his father who initially did not believe his account, said Sunita Singh, another building resident. She said: 'His father told him to stay indoors and not talk to anyone. The father may have shared the video which then went viral.' 'From early morning on Saturday, mediapersons started coming in even as the father was away at work. He returned and asked the media to leave. He told them their son was scared ever since the incident. Every time a plan passed by, which was every few minutes, he started panicking. He was hardly able to speak,' she said. Later, a team from the Ahmedabad crime branch reached the spot and whisked him away. Police later clarified that they had not detained him but were simply getting details about the video. When The Indian Express visited the building, the house was locked. An official said that Aryan and his sister had been sent to a relative's place as per instructions by senior officials. Sunita said: 'We were used to flights passing by close overhead. Ever since the crash, every time we hear a plane go by, we get scared.'
