Elon Musk's xAI to raise $5 billion despite weak investor demand

Elon Musk's xAI is on track to close on a $5 billion debt raise led by Morgan Stanley, despite tepid investor demand, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The $5 billion debt sale, which includes a floating-rate term loan, a fixed-rate loan and secured bonds, will be allocated to investors on Wednesday, the two people said, asking not to be identified because the deal is private. xAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment while Morgan Stanley declined.
The xAI offering, which was reported on June 2 as Musk and U.S. President Donald Trump traded barbs over social media, did not receive overwhelming interest from high-yield and leveraged loan investors, said five people briefed on the deal.
The floating-rate loan will be offered with an interest rate of 700 basis points over the Secured Overnight Financing Rate, a benchmark rate used to price bond deals, while the fixed-rate loan and secured notes will pay a yield of roughly 12%, the two people said.
The average yield-to-maturity on high-yield bonds closed Monday at 7.6%, according to the ICE BofA High Yield Index. Musk's AI company has to pay significantly more since xAI and its debt are not yet rated, giving investors little visibility into the company's finances and higher risk.
Three bond investors who were offered the debt told Reuters they declined to invest. One of these investors noted that xAI has not yet turned a profit and the debt is not rated. They were especially reticent given Musk's track record when he financed his $44 billion acquisition of social media giant X, known at the time as Twitter, in 2022. The banks that loaned him $13 billion to close the deal were forced to hold that debt on their balance sheets for two years because they could not offload it.
While the debt sold in full and on time, it received modest demand from investors, all five people said. Investors submitted orders for roughly 1.5 times the amount of debt available, according to the first two people briefed on the deal. Most similar junk bond deals have typically attracted orders for 2.5 to 3 times the loans and bonds being offered, the people said.
Unlike Musk's debt deal when he acquired Twitter, Morgan Stanley did not guarantee how much it would sell or commit its own capital to the deal, in what is called a "best efforts" transaction, according to one person familiar with the terms.
In the Twitter acquisition, the banks ended up making money on the debt, selling it with little-to-no discount months after Trump won the White House and Musk's influence in Washington grew.
Apart from selling debt, xAI has also been in talks to raise about $20 billion in equity, valuing the company at more than $120 billion, with some investors placing valuations as high as $200 billion, Reuters reported last week.

Nothing Phone 3 confirmed to offer extended software support: All details

The Nothing Phone 3 will officially debut in India on July 1, 2025. This year, Nothing teases the products as 'first true flagship' as it teases premium materials, powerful chipset, refined software and improved camera. Just a few days ago, Nothing revealed that the Phone 3 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor, raising eyebrows about its flagship capabilities. Now, company co-founder Akis Evangelidis has confirmed the smartphone's software support, which offers about 7 years of security updates. As the launch gets closer, we expect that Nothing will gradually reveal more details about the Phone 3 model and what it will offer in the flagship segment. Also read: India's AI Industry to Grow Threefold, May Reach $17 Billion by 2027 After Nothing Phone 3 was revealed to be powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor, many people on social media showed their doubts. Therefore, to provide clarity, Evangelidis shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the chip's capabilities. The post highlighted performance improvements in comparison to Phone 2, which showcases the Phone 3 has 88% improvement in GPU, 33% faster CPU, and 125% upgrade in NPU. ' To which Evangelidis replied, saying that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor has weaker performance in comparison to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, and that it offers 4 years of OS and software support by default. Whereas, Nothing Phone 3 with the new chip will offer 5 years of software updates and 7 years of security updates. This will come as a major upgrade since the Phone 3 supports only 3 years of software and 4 years of security updates. It is tipped to feature a 50MP triple camera setup that may include a 50MP telephoto lens with up to 3x optical zoom. Apart from these hardware upgrades, the software is also likely to provide users with seamless AI integration. However, nothing about AI has been revealed as of now. Therefore, we will have to wait until July 1 to know what Nothing has planned for its flagship model.

Oracle cloud to add xAI's Grok 3 model to lineup for corporate customers

Oracle said on Tuesday that its cloud computing division is working with Elon Musk's artificial intelligence firm xAI to offer the startup's latest AI model to business customers. Grok 3 , as the model is called, first came out February and aimed to rival the latest offerings from DeepSeek and OpenAI. Musk made the model available to paying subscribers of his X social media platform, as well as through xAI itself. Oracle will now offer Grok 3 from its data centres to corporate users who want to use the model but need their data to remain under their existing security protections with Oracle, Karan Batta, senior vice president at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure , told Reuters on Monday. Oracle also offers models from Meta, French startup Mistral and Cohere on the service, part of its overall strategy of providing versions of popular models in a way that businesses can integrate into corporate software. "Our goal here is to make sure that we can provide a portfolio of models - we don't have our own," Batta said. "That's the current strategy. We are going to be the one that offers all of them."

Vodafone Idea connects with AST to foray into satcom services

New Delhi: Vodafone Idea (Vi) has become India's third telecom operator after Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to join the fray for starting broadband-from-space services, tying up with US-based AST SpaceMobile for offering direct-to-device satellite broadband connectivity in the country. Vi said, in a joint statement on Wednesday, that the space-based cellular broadband ecosystem will be designed to expand its telecom services of terrestrial connectivity, providing voice, video, data streaming and internet access. "It will encompass the design, implementation and launch of this system wherein AST SpaceMobile will develop, manufacture and manage the satellite constellation and Vi will oversee terrestrial network integration, operating spectrum and market access," it said. The telco will be pitched against not just its two bigger domestic rivals but also Elon Musk-owned Starlink and Amazon's Kuiper in India's nascent satcom market with high growth potential. Nasdaq-listed AST SpaceMobile is building a constellation of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that connect directly with standard mobile phones, without the need for specialised equipment. UK-based Vodafone Group, a co-parent of Vi, is an investor in AST SpaceMobile, and is collaborating to set up this 'first space-based mobile network'. The first five commercial satellites have been placed in orbit successfully last September, with plans to have over 50 satellites in the coming years. "As satellite-based mobile access becomes a reality in India, we are looking forward to ushering in a new era of seamless and resilient connectivity," said Avneesh Khosla, chief marketing officer, Vi. Through the partnership, Vi and AST SpaceMobile will collaborate to develop commercial offerings for diverse sectors, including consumer, enterprise and IoT. "We are not just expanding coverage; we are breaking down barriers to connectivity, enabling everyday smartphones to access 4G and 5G directly from space," Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer, AST SpaceMobile, added. Ivory said through the partnership, new possibilities can be unlocked for emergency response, disaster management, agriculture, remote learning, and other applications. As per rules, any company offering satellite services in India needs to establish its gateways locally and route all its data through these gateways. Vi will now need to secure a satcom permit for starting satcom services. The companies have not yet shared when they plan to apply for securing the regulatory approvals. Unlike other satcom companies like Starlink and Amazon Kuiper, which need a terminal to access broadband, AST SpaceMobile partners with mobile operators to offer connectivity on the devices of users directly, without any need for additional equipment, say experts.
