Four revenue officials suspended over lapses in SC survey

The Hindu04-07-2025
Following many complaints about lapses in the ongoing Scheduled Castes (SC) survey in the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has suspended four revenue officials.
Three officials — revenue inspector Ramesh and tax collector Peddaraju, working in HBR sub-division, and tax collector C. Sentil Kumar of Kengeri sub-division — were suspended on Thursday for not contacting residents, but pasting stickers on their houses that the survey of these houses was completed. On Friday, the BBMP suspended revenue inspector Kavita, working in the Vasanthnagar sub-division, for erroneous survey in ward no. 62, Vasathnagar.
In her suspension order, the BBMP said when the head office called up residents to cross-check on the survey in the ward, they found that surveyors had marked SC families from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as 'non-SC households' during the survey, but included them as 'SC households' and uploaded their details on the app, when they went to paste stickers, creating discrepancies in the survey.

Boy killed in cylinder blast; CM announces Rs 5 lakh compensation

Bengaluru, Aug 15 (PTI) A 10-year-old boy died in a suspected cylinder blast here on Friday, police said. At least nine persons were injured in the incident. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced after visiting the blast spot and hospitals that Rs 5 lakh compensation will be given to the family of the deceased. 'And the medical expenses of those injured will be borne by the government," he added. The victim was identified as Mubarak. The incident happened at Chinnayanpalya of Wilson Garden, Central Bengaluru, a tightly packed predominantly residential neighbourhood where houses abut each other. After visiting the site, Siddaramaiah told the reporters that prima facie, a cylinder blast was the cause for the incident. 'There is no smell, but according to police and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike reports, a cylinder blast might have taken place," he said. He further said nine people were injured, and that Mubarak was declared dead at the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. Offiials had earlier said 12 persons sustained injuries in the blast. The house where the blast occurred belongs to one Kasturamma, who is also admitted in hospital with burn injuries, added the CM. According to him, 13 houses have been damaged. 'I have instructed the BBMP Commissioner to get the houses repaired. If the house has collapsed completely, we will get them constructed," he added. Earlier, speaking to reporters, City Police Commissioner, Seemanth Kumar Singh said the house in which the blast occurred, was being rented by a three-member family. 'The man works as a labourer and had left for work early in the morning as usual. The mother and the child at home were injured. But the boy who died was in a neighbouring house," said Kumar. He said the police control room received the call around 8.30am. 'We immediately informed the Bomb Disposal Squad, Anti-Terrorism Squad, State Disaster Response Force, Fire Brigade as well as the local police," Singh added. 'We are clearing the houses that are damaged, investigation is on." It was too early to say what exactly caused the blast, said Kumar. Dalit youth, father-in-law brutally beaten in Gujarat for ‘upper-caste' moustache; 5 accused on the run

AHMEDABAD: A shocking case of caste-based violence has emerged from Gujarat's Junagadh district, where a Dalit youth and his father-in-law were brutally assaulted for keeping a beard and moustache that their attackers claimed were reserved for "upper castes." The incident, which occurred on August 11 in Khambhaliya (Ozat) village, has sparked outrage, with police registering a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The victims, identified as Sagar Makwana, a labourer from Mangnath Pipli village, and his father-in-law Jivanbhai Wala, were allegedly attacked by a group of men who hurled casteist slurs and mocked Sagar's appearance. According to the complaint, Sagar had gone to Khambhaliya to get his bike repaired but found the garage closed. As he was returning home, he was stopped near a railway bridge by Shailesh Jebaliya from Navi Chavand village, who allegedly knocked him off his bike and began abusing him for his beard and moustache. Fearing further assault, Sagar called his father-in-law for help. However, when Jivanbhai arrived, a silver car without a number plate pulled up, carrying Lalo Bhupat and three unidentified men. The group allegedly intensified the casteist abuse before launching a violent attack—beating Sagar with a car wheel while punching and slapping Jivanbhai. The assailants fled only after villagers began gathering, but not before issuing threats.
