KC nonprofit serving seniors struggling due to federal cuts
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A home delivery of a hot meal is a blessing for people like Marilyn Driver, a retired teacher and families like John Johnico's.
'By the end of the month, that's the hardest time when you're retired,' Driver said.

'Without that program, we would be struggling even harder than we are now,' Johnico said. 'We're blessed to have our food delivered.'
Delivering the meals are volunteers with KC Shepherd's Center, which focuses on helping seniors.
'We are the fastest growing population, we are the fastest growing homeless population, and yet funding is not keeping up at all,' Janet Baker said.
Baker is the executive director of the organization. She said right now they're stretching their resources thin to keep Meals on Wheels operating.
'We're in crisis to be honest with you, and already only receiving one percent of funding,' Baker added.
The Shepherd's Center is one of the largest nonprofit providers of Meals on Wheels, keeping homebound seniors on a fixed income fed.
Baker said this year alone they've lost $500,000 in funding, lost one of their other programs and can now only serve 600 people, half of the number they were serving two years ago.
'You know you're going to have something to eat until that next month comes,' Driver said. 'Meals on Wheels is a lifesaver for elderly people.'
'If they were to stop it, there would be a lot of people hurting because we do need it,' Johnico added.

Now they're heavily relying on the community's support to continue providing some relief.
'Will you fill an empty plate? Will you provide us with the ability to deliver meals to hungry homebound seniors?' Baker asked.

McKinley High School moves to temporary location as campus undergoes renovation
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — McKinley High School is temporarily relocating. The move is necessary due to McKinley undergoing renovations. School officials announced that their last day at 800 East McKinley Street will be Wednesday, June 18. After that, McKinley will be located at Kenilworth Middle School. The address is 7600 Boone Drive. According to East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools, the renovations and improvements are a part of a tax plan approved by voters. While construction is ongoing, students from McKinley High will attend classes at Kenilworth for two years. EBR Schools said they will be reimagining the exterior of the building, renovating some interior spaces, along with other projects. The school system confirmed that there will be a community meeting in the future where architectural renderings will be shown to the public. US Army Corps of Engineers offering two free days this month at recreation sites nationwide
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is offering two free days this month at its recreation sites across the country. It announced Friday that it will be waiving fees in observance of the USACE birthday on June 16 and Juneteenth National Independence Day on June 19. The USACE has more than 2,600 recreation areas nationwide. Things to do this weekend in Kansas City June 6-8 According to the USACE, the waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities (group picnic shelters) and events, the USACE said. 'Other agencies or vendors that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas that they manage,' the USACE said in a news release. The USACE also offers other fee-free days throughout the year to mark days of celebration and commemoration, including Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, National Public Lands Day and Veterans Day. In April, the USACE announced it would be closing dozens of campsites and recreation areas across the Midwest. It then launched a new website to keep visitors informed about which sites remain open.
